Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) for Scuba Diving
They seem to be everywhere these days – airports, convention centers, even the mall. But does the average person know
how to operate an AED if the need arises? Do divers know how to apply AED use to a diver in trouble?
Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) for Scuba Diving is a program designed to provide training on the easy-to-use
devices and increase divers’ confidence and ability to assist in emergency situations. In this program, divers learn the
warning signs of cardiac arrest and how to use automated external defibrillators.

On-Site Neurological Assessment for Divers
Approximately two-thirds of divers with decompression illness have evidence of damage to the nervous system. But
because the symptoms are often vague and easily dismissed as insignificant or not dive-related, treatment is not always
sought when it’s needed.
On-Site Neurological Assessment for Divers (Neuro) trains divers to recognize the signs and symptoms of decompression
illness and activate emergency assistance. The program is especially useful to divemasters and instructors charged
with the care of others, though it provides the same benefit to all. Understanding the signs of DCI and determining their
severity, both of which are critical steps to getting an injured diver to appropriate medical care.

641-1000 DAN Surface Signal Kit

One safety precaution no diver should be without,
surface signal kits offer a variety of function. The
DAN Surface Signal Kit features a 6’ orange safety
sausage with lpi attachment, dump valve and a
2” reflective strip that runs the length of the tube,
a feature unique to the DAN signal tube. The DAN
logo is featured (also in reflective ink) on the front
at both the top and bottom of the tube; the bottom
logo includes DAN’s emergency hotline number and
is visible in both the rolled and unrolled position.
Encased in a mesh pocket at the base of the tube
is a Wind Storm® whistle, a 3-1⁄4” x 4-1⁄4” signal
mirror and a chemical lightstick. Dimensions of the
kit are: 7-1⁄2” wide x 3” high (rolled); 7-1⁄2” wide x
72” high (unrolled). The signal tube can also double
as a secondary lift bag; lift capacity is rated at
approximately 30 lbs.

A Surface Signal Kit Story

On a recent dive trip to Cozumel the weather turned very rainy several days in a row. We went out one afternoon to
Punta Tunich. The current there is usually pretty fast, but didn’t seem too bad when we started our dive. As the dive
progressed, the current picked up and soon it was at about 3 knots. When we surfaced it was raining extremely
hard and the current had taken us out of the area designated for our boat pick-up. Upon realizing what was
happening and not seeing the boat in our immediate vicinity, I launched my DAN safety sausage and repeatedly
blew my whistle to attract attention to us. After about 15 minutes the rain stopped and in a short period of time
the dive boat was headed in our direction to pick us up. The boat captain explained that the reason he was able to
find us was that he saw the safety sausage waving in the air and heard the whistle. He said that the DAN safety
sausage was high enough in the air that he could see it over the wave action and attributed our safe return to the
boat to the use of my DAN safety sausage.
