EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
The report summarizes with an organization profile of Pearl Continental Hotel,

Lahore giving its introduction. Pearl Continental Hotels have positioned itself as an

extremely successful chain with fully owned five-star luxury Hotels and resorts in

Pakistan making their marks in Karachi, Lahore, Rawalpindi, Peshawar, Bhurban,

Muzaffarabad and Gwadar. It have 607 rooms in the new Atrium Mall wing Lahore

Branch, and giving detail on Mission, Vision, its products and services, their all

departments, the detail description of my specialization Department, the Hierarchy,

and Organogram of the organization. Following that the next section contains

information about the job, which is just tasks and responsibilities during my

internship period at this Hotel.

My internship journey here at Pearl Continental Hotel started from 14th May 2018

and ended in 29th June 2018 for the duration of 7 weeks and I started from

Finance department in which field that I have done my specialization where I have

utilized my six weeks of my internship.

After three weeks in Accounts department at Pearl Continental Hotel, Lahore they

transferred me to the Credit Department at Pearl Continental Hotel Lahore for three

weeks.

This report contains introduction of all departments and their product and services

and restaurants and their functions.

This report carries out SWOT Analysis that touches upon strengths, weakness,

opportunities, and threats to the organization and finally there is assessment and

recommendations.

INTRODUCTION OF THE COMPANY

Group Profile and History


Hashoo group of companies was established under the vision of
Sadruddin Hashwani. In the past time he through his single
handed dedication and commitment to the profession has
transformed this group in to a leading industrial group of
Pakistan, well known for its forward-looking approach, and Hashoo Group Logo

highest standards of quality and integrity.

“Starting with Cotton trading, Hashoo Group of companies today boasts the only chain of
five star hotels in Pakistan namely the Pearl Continental hotels chain and the Karachi
Marriott and the Islamabad Marriott Hotels with presence in all the provincial capitals and
the federal capital except one. Today, Hashoo Group of Companies besides hotel industry
encompasses oil and gas exploration, mining, ceramics, pharmaceuticals, tourism and
travel. It also has considerable investment In real estate. Mr. Sadruddin Hashwani with his
keen eye on the future is now guiding the Group to enter the field of Information
Technology (IT). Towards that end a wholly owned subsidiary of the group known as Net
21 (Pvt) Ltd is currently operating as Internet Service Provider, which is planned to serve
as spring board to launch substantive IT projects”.

The oil and gas exploration is being done under the Orient Petroleum Inc, which has
recently met with successful find. The Group is constantly on its forward march. Some
examples of it are: The construction of Pearl Continental Hotel Bhurban in the Murree
Hills, Construction of new wing called Atrium Wing of the Pearl Continental Hotel Lahore
equipped with the most modern amenities, Continual up-gradation and modernization of
Pearl Continental Hotels and Islamabad as well as Karachi Marriott Hotels, Acquisitions of
the state-of-the-art Ceramics factory to design and produce crockery and a plant known as
Gel caps to manufacture halal gelatin capsules for the pharmaceutical industry according
to the most stringent quality standards. Mr. Hashwani’s Vision knows no bounds and it will
be difficult to predict as to what will be his focus of attention tomorrow. For him time is
short and the Art is long. Therefore, his philosophy is that each moment of life should go

towards advancement of cause of humanity at large.

Pearl Continental Hotel is now on the 1st ranking of Pakistan famous Hotels. It is the most
innovative Hotel chain of Pakistan and most foreigners stay here because they know their
services is not just a word – it is a way of being.
Hotel occupancy rates of PC Hotels are rising in Pakistan due to better law and order and
increase in economic activity, especially related to China-Pakistan Economic Corridor
(CPEC).
Pearl Continental Hotels possess a legacy that makes you realize that there is no place
like this. There are work ethics for starting job which involve orientations, Job Description
and Equal employment opportunities.

Pearl Continental is categorized in the industry of Hotels & Resorts. The services offered
by this hotel come under hybrid category. Hotel’s offer consists of equal parts of goods
and services. People patronize hotel for its food and its services such as that of its rooms.

Management structure at Pearl Continental


There are seven major functional departments in Pearl Continental Hotel Lahore. These
are:
1. Finance Department
2. Sales & Marketing Department
3. Engineering Department
4. House Keeping Department
5. Human Resource Department
6. Food and Beverage Department (Front Office & Restaurants)
7. Cost & Control Department

A brief introduction of these departments is as follows:

Sales department
The basic sales are concerned with reservation of rooms. The sales department works
under this consideration.

Marketing department
The marketing department is concerned with promotional activities, which includes:
 Above the line marketing
 Below the line marketing
Above the line marketing includes promotional campaigns in print and electronic media.
Below the line marketing includes local campaigns including banners, bill-boards and
handouts.

Finance department
It is concerned with the financial recording, provision and payments. It consists of a
finance control controller, who is the supervisor of the department. There is also a credit
section for employees and customers

Engineering department
It is concerned with the maintenance of the rooms, offices, floors and lobby area. It
ensures full time provision and maintenance of water, power and light in all places.

Housekeeping
It is concerned with general cleanliness and hosting services to the guests. It has a supply
section which ensured provision of accessories and valuables. Corporate level purchases
are made from Karachi section, while local level purchases include daily items.

Human resource department


This department is concerned with recruitment, promotion, training of Workers in the
organization. There are 500 plus workers in the Hotel for which the department have to
keep a union of worker which works for social security of the employees. It has three
sections, which includes personnel department, human resource management department
and human resource development department.

Food and beverage department


It is the main department in the hotel, which includes:
 Restaurants:
A sumptuous food is served at four outlets.

Taipan
Dine in the splendor of South East Asia. Fun, fresh and surprisingly affordable, Taipan,
with its exciting and enticing open show kitchen, bridges the gap between fast food and
fine South East Asian dining. Exclusively Chinese, it serves the best Cuisine in Town, and
opens both for Lunch and Dinner. In Taipan Restaurant, people can have buffet lunch
from 12:00 PM onwards where the finest Chinese buffet is served. In the evening timings
are from 7:30 PM to 11:00 PM.

Marcopolo
Marcopolo features contemporary, cosmopolitan menu that unite influence from around
the world while honoring traditional Lahori favorites. The striking interior design of this
elegant restaurant is distinguished by its floral wood paneling, marbling in midnight brown
and deep fuchsia chandeliers. It serves Pakistani and Continental Buffet Cuisine, and is
open for Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner. Breakfast starts in Marcopolo in the early hours of
the morning serving lavish buffet breakfast. Lunch timing in Marcopolo starts from 12:00
PM to 3:00 PM.

Bukhara
Bukhara, at Pearl Continental Hotel Lahore, is a branded cuisine reflecting Lahore’s rich
culinary heritage. This luxurious setting decorated with mughlai paintings, takes you back
to the royal mughlai kitchens, famous for the most exotic and finest food for royal families.
Opens to the lilting sounds of the local Ghazal Singer, and is most famous for its mouth
watering Pakistani cuisine, including live Bar–B–Que. It opens at 7:30 PM serving Bar-B-
Que. Buffet layout starts from Chicken Tikka, Seekh Kebab to endless number of Bar-B-
Que delicacies.

Café Latte
Café Latte is a swank heaven offering Coffee menu alla moda. The sharp espresso,
classic Cappuccino, wild and exotic mocha, earthy, and aromatic Latte with soft gooey
biscuits are all irresistible and delicious refreshments served here throughout the day. It is
best place to loosen your tie after a hard day in the field or for a catch-up chit chat.

Key Functions of the main departments

Sales and Marketing department

Marketing department is responsible for all activities which are necessary to promote PC
Hotel in market. They also make an effort for formulating marketing strategies, market
research and find new opportunities in market. Industrial marketing and sales department
is also responsible the sales of PC Hotel services and build a profitable customer
relationship.

Functions of Sales Department:


Sales Department Functions Around Its Following Sections…
 Sales Office:
Located in Executive Office Corridor. Responsible for generation of all sales
correspondence.
 Reservations:
Next to sales office, reservations office exists on the same place. Reservations prime
responsibility is for booking of rooms for guests, corporate clients, monitoring & recording
of revenue generation, occupancy forecasts etc.
 Banquet Sales:
Banquet Sale Associates Are Responsible to Handle & Look after Reservation/Facilitation
of All Banquet Halls & Board Rooms for Corporate Clients
 Marketing & Communication Department:
Marketing & Communication Department Namely Public Relations in PCHL Is Responsible
For Marketing The Hotel, Its Product & Its Services As Per Brand Standards Of The
Company.

magazine ads for some consumer products like Marco Polo and beauty Salon etc. They
also use Public relations as a tool to promote their business like sponsorships.

Finance and Accounts Department


There are some key functions of the finance department:

Income Auditing
The working of the income auditor is to check the overall income of the PC hotel from all
kind of sources, i.e. from sales, Rental money, banquet sales and other services that the
PC hotel is providing and also check the proper functioning of the income of the hotel free
from any blunders.
Daily income report states the daily income earned in a day from all the sales, services
given etc. It mentions incomes of all the individual restaurants, banquets, room service
etc.
General Cashier Summary
The General Cashier Summary includes all kinds of cash that a hotel received in a day.
Firstly all the cashiers drop all the cash in to the front office where the GSO (General sales
officer) and the Chief cashier counts it and made a cross tally it with the receipts and then
deposits it to the bank.
City Ledger Register
In City ledger cheques number is noted down of the cheques which have been paid
through the credit cards. There serial numbers are marked down and a record of is made
of daily cheque paid through credit cards.

Store Department
The store department stores the items and makes a record of the items that has been
received and issued. Store department offices use two methods for inventory control,
which are:
1. LIFO
2. FIFO
LIFO method is used for engineering and general store items which have a longer expiry
and FIFO method is used for food and Beverages which have a shorter expiry.

Cost Department
Main Working of the cost department is to check the overall costs of all things the Hotel is
using and coming through the receiving department. And also to maintain a record of all
the costs that has incurred on all the products and services.

Purchase department
Providing all required items/services through an economical and efficient purchasing
method to run the Hotel’s operations and efficiently.

Firstly all the concerned departments if they need something issue a purchase requisition
approved by the director finance, Department head and Cost controller. Then the
purchase officer held an auction of that good on the internet by mentioning the specific
requirements of the good needed. Then after the close of the auction the parties which
give fewer rates at the discussed quality are short listed and then the purchase manager
selects the vendor to whom the order to be given. And then the party selected for the
purchase is informed and required order is confirmed.
Closed Purchase Order
IT is made for only time purchase.
Standard purchase Order
It is made for long time purchase. It’s done by contracting the party for supply of
that product for a contracted time period.
Central Purchase Order
It is as same as SPO. But it is made by the head office if the order requires heavy
amount or bulk purchase.

Interpretation
The above results of current ratio shows that company has enough current assets to pay
off its current liabilities in current year and as well as its previous years. The company‘s
current assets are 1.89 times more than its current liabilities in 2015, 1.24 times more than
its current liabilities in 2016 and 2.49 times more than its current liabilities in 2017 which is
highest amongst previous years

Profitability Ratios

1. Gross Profit Margin=Gross Profit / Sales Revenue x 100

Interpretation
The above result of gross profit margin ratio shows that company did well in managing the
costs of sales. In all above three years company’s performance is good in terms of
managing the cost of sales. It may be improved by increasing sales price or decreasing
the cost of sales.

Interpretation
The result of above operating margin ratio shows that PC hotel made a profit of 26.23%
after paying the variable costs in 2015. It means remaining profit is used to pay the
variable cost. PC hotel made a profit of 20.69% after paying the variable costs in 2016.
PC hotel made a profit of 26.29% after paying the variable costs in 2017. It shows
company’s ability to use its variable cost is not good.

3. Net Profit Margin=Profit after Tax / Sales Revenue x 100

Interpretation
The above results of net profit margin ratio shows that company had not well managed its
profitability in 2016 as compared to 2015 and 2017. Although these years also have less
percentage amount of profitability.

4. Capital employed=Total Assets-Current Liabilities

Interpretation
The above result of capital employed ratio shows that Company’s percentage of capital
employed is decreasing from year 2015 to 2017. It means company had small short term
liabilities in 2015 and in 2016 it had higher amount of short term liabilities.

5. Return on Equity=Operating Profit / (Total Assets – Current Liabilities) x 100

Interpretation
The results of above ratio of Return on equity show that company’s percentage of return
on equity decreasing from 2015 to 2017. Company has higher percentage of return in
2015. It means company has higher profitable assets in 2015 as compared to 2016.
Company has less percentage of return in 2016 as this shows company not used its
assets well to make more profit.

Interpretation
The above results of total asset turnover ratio shows that in all three years company’s has

same ability to convert its assets into sales which is around 0.25 times. This results shows
that Company has weak ability of managing its assets so that company could generate
more sales.

Interpretation
The above results of fixed asset turnover ratio shows that in all three years company’s has
somehow same ability to used its fixed assets so that it generated sales which is around
0.30 times. This results shows that Company has weak ability of managing its fixed assets
so that company could generate more sales.

1. Earnings per Share Ratio

The earnings per share ratio are the amount of earnings per each share of the company’s

stock.

Interpretation
The results of above earnings per share ratio shows that company’s earnings per share
are increasing from 2015 to 2017. Currently, company has greater earnings per share

rupees of 35.23. Company has very low earnings in 2016 because it generate rupees
19.78 per share which is very low as compared to other years.

2. Debt Equity Ratio equals the total debt divided by equity. It tells how much debt is
being used to finance the firm.

Interpretation
The above results of debt to equity ratio shows that company used less debt to financed
its firm in all three years. If value would greater than one then company will use more debt
in financing of the firm. In these results, company finances its firm more from other
sources of financing than debt or loan. In 2017, company gets more debt as compared to
2015 and 2016

Purpose of Human Resource Department at Pearl Continental Hotel

HR department at PC Hotel looks after the hiring, firing, employees’ welfare &
development aspects. HR mainly monitors disciplinary actions of hotel employees.

In this chapter, firstly I will discuss about plan of my internship activities, Orientation and
departments where I worked and also discuss the activities perform there.

Introduction of plan of the Internship activities


I started my internship at PC Hotel Lahore on 14th of May, 2018. Assistant Director of
Finance took my interview before joining the Pearl continental Hotel .He gave me a brief
introduction about company main functions and responsibilities. I served the 2 sub
departments of Finance department like Accounts department and Credit Department for
about 6 weeks and then I worked in Public relations department (under marketing
department) for about 1 week. Assistant Director Finance and Credit Manager gave me a
lot of confidence during my internship. They help me out in difficult circumstances. I ended
my internship on 29th of June, 2018. The total duration of my internship is 7 weeks.

Orientation

14th of May, 2018, was my first day at Pearl Continental Hotel. Before joining the Pearl
Continental Hotel Lahore, HR Manager Miss Siddiqa Jabeen told me about the Standard
Operating Procedures (SOP) of the Pearl Continental Hotel. She asked me why you
choose Pearl Continental Hotel for internship during this meeting. She sent me to the
training manager for further procedures. The training manager took small interview as he
asked about Pivot table which is used in Microsoft Excel and then he sent me in finance
department according to my area of specialization. As my internship was starting from
accounts department in payable section so, my first meeting was with Assistant Director
Finance (ADF). He welcomed me warmly. He gave me a brief introduction about the whole
company, its goals, missions, objectives, etc. Then he told me about accounts and
finance department and its sub-departments. He also took my interview before joining. He
also asked about a brief introduction about me, including my studies, my university, my
family, my purpose of doing internship, past experiences, etc.
Some rules and regulations, which must be followed by all employees, were also
discussed during this interview. Then he told me that I will start from Payable section.
Give briefing about that section, introduce me with the supervisor that will supervise me in
that section and give me under the supervision of him.

Introduction about working of Finance Department


At very first day, Usman Ali (Accounts Payable Officer) gave me an introduction about
working (Different Functions) of Finance Department which I discussed as follows:

 Income Auditing
The working of the income auditor is to check the overall income of the PC hotel
from all kind of sources, i.e. from sales, Rental money, banquet sales and other
services that the PC hotel is providing and also check the proper functioning of the

income of the hotel free from any blunders. Proper record is kept which marked any
kind of retrieval easy. In order to do that many reports are made and maintained on
daily bases and monthly and yearly bases.
 General Cashier Summary
The General Cashier Summary includes all kinds of cash that a hotel received in a
day. Firstly all the cashiers drop all the cash in to the front office where the GSO
(General sales officer) and the Chief cashier counts it and made a cross tally it with
the receipts and then deposits it to the bank. Bank deposits this amount in to the
PC Hotel account and sends a report of that deposit to the income auditor where
the income auditor note down all cash receipts of all cash cashier in the computer
and makes a summary of it.

 Discount
Those customers who hold a privilege membership card are given special
discounts depending on number of persons using a facility such as:

1 Person = 15 % discount
2 Persons = 50 % discount
3-10 Persons = 20 % discount
11-20 Persons = 15 % discount

There is no discount if the number of persons exceeds 20.

Payable Section in Accounts Department


After knowing the some functions of finance departments, Usman Ali (Accounts Payable
Officer) told me about the working of his section which known as payable section that I
described as follows:
The main working of payable Department is to pay the expenses of the hotel.
The main expenses of the Pearl Continental Hotel Lahore are:
1. Purchases
2. Salaries
3. Misc. Expenses

All kind of purchase orders comes along with the bill of the purchase to the Payable from
the Purchase Department. We first verify that the concerned people such as Cost

Controller and the Receiving officer has signed it and posted in computer in the Receiving
Report. After verification we made two vouchers such as:

1. Payable Voucher
2. Payment Voucher

Payable voucher is made at the receiving of the Purchase Order (PO) and when the
payment is going to be made then Payment voucher is made.
Payment is made in two forms:
1. Cash
2. Cheque

Cash payment of the amount which is less than 5000 is made by the Chief Cashier. All
other payments of Rs. 5000 and over are made in Cheque. As the payment voucher is
made the balance from payable voucher is automatically deducted.

Payment to Purchase Officer


The Purchase officer who buys stock on cash requires cash against it from the accounts
department to maintain his balance of Rs. 200000, which the payable department pays
him.
Closing
At the end of the month the payable department made the closing off all the work done in
the month. The main purpose of the closing is to make the balance zero of the payable
voucher entries which is made at the start.
Tax Exemption Certificate
Some of the companies are exempted from tax, so the Pearl Continental Hotel Lahore
cannot cut the tax of those companies. So a file is made of all the companies which do not
pay tax and all of their transactions.

Activities Performed at Payable Section in Accounts


Department

 In this job Accounts payable officer was responsible for the processing of invoices

and the issuing of payments.

 After knowing the some functions of finance department and working of payable

section, my supervisor at payable section gave me task of filings of payables.

 I made arrangements of payment and payable vouchers with vendor’s invoices

from month July 2017 to April 2018. Then I put these vouchers with invoices in files

monthly wise. For each month one file is must be used but for some months more

than one files are used according to the payables data of month. It takes 2 days of

my internship to do all this about filing work.

 Accounts payable officer was asked me to find the invoices of one company. I

found all invoices of that company from the bags which provided by purchase

department. Then I made working of this company in excel. I have to put info all

invoices in excel working like invoice number, invoice date and invoice amount.

After that I checked the total amount with Fidelio Material Control. If there is

difference of amount between total invoices amount and Fidelio Materials Control

then I would write difference in excel working if no difference then write zero. Fidelio

Materials Control is software where purchase department put all invoices amount

so we have to verify this. I printed this excel working for further use.

 At Pearl Continental Hotel, I came to know that all utility bills are paid through

cheque. I made a cheque of United Bank Limited Pearl Continental Hotel for

payment of LESCO bill. I printed cheque from computer and made entry of payment

in SunSystems software. After that I made payment and payable voucher. Then I

attached this payment and payable voucher to the bill and cheque also been

attached. Later I visited United Bank branch in Pearl Continental Hotel for payment

of LESCO bill.

 In this payable section, we Paid vendors by monitoring discount opportunities;

verifying sales tax number and income tax number; scheduling and preparing

cheques; resolved purchase order, invoice, or payment differences and

documentation.

 After knowing the whole working of payable section, I was assigned a work to issue

the payment with all required procedures. For this purpose, firstly I gathered all

invoices of the company for a given month and made excel working after putting

invoices information in excel. Before cheque is going for signing I have to do certain

list of works and all works attached with cheque:

 Printed invoices information from Fidelio Materials Control

 All original Invoices with Purchase Orders

 Verify Vendor’s sales tax status and income tax status from Federal Board of

Revenue website.

 Printed Cheque with amount that Pearl Continental Hotel Lahore has to paid.

All above documents are attached and then it will go for signing.

 In payable section we paid employees by receiving and verifying expenses reports

and requests for advance income and then preparing cheques.

 In this payable section Accounts payable officer maintains accounting ledgers by

verifying and posting accounting transactions.

 Most of the times vendors call us for asking about their payments. They asked

when they will receive their payments. So I picked calls so many times and respond

them after asking from my supervisors when they will receive payments.

 Verifies vendor accounts by reconciling monthly statements and related

transactions.

 I visited Banks in Pearl Continental Hotel so many times for payment of Pearl

Continental Hotel’s expenses like utility bills etc.

 I maintained historical records by filing documents into the files.

 Reports sales taxes by calculating requirements on paid invoices.

 Accounts payable officer always protects organization's value by keeping

information confidential. I also did same in payable section.

 I update job knowledge by participating in different opportunities in payable section.

 Accounts payable job requires dedication towards your work. We had to issue

payments on time which we assure our vendors. In Pearl Continental Hotel, There

is larger number of Vendors for different things like for fruits Pearl Continental Hotel

has Natural Foods Limited which located in Badami Bhagh Lahore. So that this job

accomplishes accounting and organization mission by completing related results as

needed.

Credit Department
During my 4th week at Internship I was transferred to the Credit department of Pearl
Continental Hotel Lahore. I got three weeks training at there. Before starting my activities
at there, Assistant Credit Manager Adnan Nawaz gave me introduction of Credit
Department and main working of Credit department which I described as follows:
The main working of the credit department is of two things

1. Billing

2. Recovery

Billing

Firstly all the cheques which have been pain by credit cards or if they charged to the
company or charged to the individual, they are posted in the computer and report is made
of it. Then all of the advances that have come so far are posted in the computer and a tally
is made of receivables with debit and advances with the credit side of a report prepared to
check it. Then the bills which are charged to individuals or charged to companies are
separated and all the bills named against each company etc are gathered and the original

copy of the bill along with the vouchers attached are send to the concerned
company/individual.
The tips given on credit card payment are not taken at that time rather they are sent to the
banks for collections. United Bank adds this amount in the account of Pearl Continental
Hotel Lahore and the Standard Chartered issue cheque against it.
Trial Balance Report
It is the main report made by the Credit Executive which displays how many
receivables the hotel possesses and how many payables hotel has to pay.

Recovery
Recovery is the main part of the Credit department. It means taken back the money which
the companies or individuals owes to the Hotel such that when they use a facility and then
charge that amount of service to the company or individual.

Internship Activities at Credit Department


 In this department, firstly I was assigned to credit card executive who reconcile the
credit card payments. He tallies the credit cards payments with the Bank
statements.
 My first task is to tallies the credit cards payments of customers with the Banks
statements of Pearl Continental Hotel Lahore for the month of April 2018.
 I did this same above mentioned task for 7 to 8 days. In this task firstly I printed the
Bank statements of the all banks like Bank Alfalah, Habib Bank Limited and United
Bank Limited from daily City Ledger. Then I tally the amounts of day by day written
in bank statements with batches of credit cards that closed on daily bases.
 It takes a lot of time to complete the tally the amounts of bank statements with
batches of credit cards for whole month of April.
 In this department I also made refunds for the customers. If we found any
excessive amount during tally then we made refund to that customers or even
customer can also contact us and tell his or her problem during credit card payment
problem. Because sometime Front desk officers or other restaurant’s officers took
double amount charged through customers or put wrong amount of sales during
credit card sales. So Credit card Executive do all this type of Activities.
 In this section of credit department, I also picked phone calls of customers who told
me about their credit card sales problems in Pearl Continental Hotel Lahore. So I
got confidence there to how to communicate with the customer and how to listen

their problems first and then give them a proper solution after carefully listen the
problems of credit cards.
 I visited so many times at different places of Pearl Continental Hotel Lahore where
credit card swipe machine is located like front desk office and all restaurants and
health club etc for the closing of daily batches.

Internship Activities at Public Relation Department


During Last week at my internship I was assigned to public relations department which is
new area for me. I did my all internship in finance department except this last week. I
asked the working of this department which public relations officer told me as I discussed
as follows:
A company must relate in a good way to a large number of interested public. Publics are
any group that have a potential interest in or have an impact on a company’s ability to
achieve its objectives. The public can facilitate a company’s ability to achieve its
objectives; Effective public relations can enhance the usefulness of promotion tools
employed by the service company. Public relations involve a variety of programmes
designed to promote a company and to protect the image of its individual products.

Special Tasks
In Public Relations department, public relation officer gave me a special task of FIFA
World Cup 2018 publicity in Marcopolo restaurant which is main restaurant of the Pearl
Continental Hotel Lahore. Before giving this task he asked me about the football players
and to whom I have known. He told me to choose best 16 football players in the world and
selects their good images of these players from the internet. All banners of these players
are printed after 2 days so I and my fellow internee Mr. Arslan post these banners on the
walls of the Marcopolo restaurant with the help of workers. We are asked to do a publicity
of best football players with perfect way in terms of their location on the Wall and Margins
on Wall of Marcopolo restaurant etc.

which is vendor or supplier of pearl continental hotel. Pear continental hotel Lahore has to
pay some amount to Bashir Sons against some items which was bought by Pearl
Continental Hotel Lahore. While during internship at Payable section I made this working
for issuing the payment to the Vendor by putting invoices information into excel sheet.

Reflections on activities performed in the organization

My performance in an organization was very good. I am satisfied with my performance in


the organization. I had learnt few things which is important before going to professional
life. This internship gave me a lot of confidence. Our teachers in department of business
education taught us how to communicate well with the customers and how to behave well.
These all learning’s that I have got from my teachers which will help me to do internship
with strict Standard Operating Procedures of Pearl Continental Hotel Lahore. Our head of
department in Business education told us many times to wear formal dressing which will
help us in Pearl Continental Hotel Lahore. In PC Hotel there is strict rules and regulations
for employees and dressing code is one of them. Every executive employee have to wear
pent coat in summer days so which is quite difficult experience for us but with the gaining’s
from our teachers we adjusted ourselves with the environment of the Pearl Continental
Hotel Lahore.

In Finance as area of specialization I learned a lot of things in the classroom especially


from the Dr. Shaukat Ali Raza (Head of Department). He taught us many important
concepts of the finance which will able me to do tasks in finance department just like I
taught about suppliers payments on timely in class rooms so I implemented these
concepts in my internship in accounts department.

It’s my first experience of internship as I got acquainted with culture of the office. Then I
learnt about Microsoft Excel, Word, and Power Point apart from the learning that I already
had, our teacher Dr. Ahmad Sohail Lodhi taught the Microsoft Office in an excellent way
and we done some assignments of word and excel during our course of study. The
assignment on word that Dr. Ahmad Sohail Lodhi gave to all of us was very meaningful
and learningful task which will help us in every field of our life So these all learning that I
have got in classrooms that all helped me to use Microsoft word and Microsoft word in an
efficiently and effectively.

1. There is lots of paper work for even a single transaction which on the whole

sometimes makes it quite difficult to maintain and handle all this.

2. Recovery of balance is better when the recovery officer is good at the

communication so he can deal in good words. But here recovery system is not very

efficient as other works are. So it needs careful scrutiny for better results. Recovery

officers here are good but they need some improvement.

3. Exterior of the building needs improvement. The interior of the buildings is well

luxurious but it does not look like a five star hotel from the exterior.

4. There should be proper balance and division between works especially in those

works which are at par, same level. There are some of the officers during a lot of

work but some other officers are not doing so that much works although they are all

at same level.

5. The hotel rules are quite strict for the employees especially at the operational level.

Employees should be relaxed and provided a good environment to work so that

they can work to their full potential.

6. In Pearl Continental Hotel Lahore, everything is well defined that discourage the

innovation.

According to mine, our Internship in-charge and other teachers gave us a proper

orientation before going to internship. They all teachers especially internship in-charge

told us about the rules and guidelines for internship report properly without any ambiguity.

All staffs of department did well for the internship program. In this regard I would thanks to

Dr. Ahmad Sohail Lodhi who make the contents of internship report with full dedication

and hard working and then gave us proper instructions about the report. I think the quality

of Internship program in Department of Business education is unmatchable. But one thing

I want to suggest for the department that they required from us a lot of words in internship

report which should revise.

Recommendations for the Department of Business Education

The Department of Business Education did a very good job for grooming, encouraging

and helping its students and preparing them for the internship. MBE Students competes

with the students of IBA or Haile College of Commerce and other well reputed commerce

colleges. The teachers and Head of Department is very hard working and committed and

they give personal time to solve the problems of students and guide them in every field.

But in every Organization, there is something needs to be improved. My suggestions are:

 Lectures should be delivered in English and Urdu mix and Student should have

right to deliver his/her presentation in English and Urdu mix.

 Department of business education should introduce more subjects of business or

information technology like Ecommerce, Database Management Systems and

Entrepreneur.

 Visiting teachers must be appointed on merit and their communication power

should be understandable way, some time they are not familiar rules and regulation

of Business Education and they even can’t deliver their lectures confidently.

 Department of Business Education should encourage and motivate the students if

they achieved something.

 They should always motivate the students because motivation is very necessary for

doing tasks and learning.

 If possible, then please promote the degree of MBE in commerce colleges because

mostly people do not know the degree. But degree is well organized as compared

to M.com. There is a lot of learning and practicality in this degree. I really enjoyed

this degree and this degree made my worth in terms of different skills

Learning and achievements at internship

It’s my first experience of internship as I got acquainted with culture of the office. At Pearl

Continental, you must follow certain dress code. It was an absolute worthwhile experience

working at the Pearl Continental Hotel. The friendly welcoming staff and the space they

have created for a trainee/intern allowed me with ample opportunities to learn.

On completion of this internship period, I came to know about the importance of Accounts

and Credit department and the role of Credit manager, Credit Executive, Accounts

Payable Officer, and Assistant Director Finance in an organization.

There is a good system of Credit Department because they are managing very well and

they all are very cooperative. It is a practical implication of all my studies on Finance

Department. It is a place where everyone can learn what they want in each and every

field.

In this report we gave the overview of Pearl Continental, and learnt about their

management style, culture, their strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats.

Recommendations for future interns


 Future students should have a proper reference for internship.

 Before internship you must have grip on Microsoft Office.

 Before internship you must understand all theoretical concepts which you have

learned in the class room.

 Before choosing the any organization, you must take advice from teachers.

 Try to choose the organization that gives stipend because it will increase your

motivation.

 I advise you to do internship in Pearl Continental Hotel Lahore. Don’t think you

have specialization in marketing or finance. Because Pearl Continental Hotel is

good step to start you career.

 Students must always have positive learning attitude. Because attitude matters a lot

where you want to do internship.

 I advices you to never underestimate your abilities and skills and never think that

the others are from Good universities like LUMS, NUST and FAST. Because when

you think that others are good you automatically lose your confidence.

 When you will go for internship, you must have wear proper dressing code with

formal shoes because physical appearance matters a lot in professional

environment of the organization.
