Step 7: Estimate the mass of fine aggregate needed—Following the weight method of ACI
211.1, simply add up the masses of cement, water, and coarse aggregate already determined.
275 lb + 598 lb + 19401930 lb = 28132803 lb (in.-lb units)
163 kg + 354 kg + 1146 kg = 1663 kg (SI units)

Page 54, Step 7 (cont’d), revised as:

Then subtract the above value from the estimated mass of a cubic yard (meter) of concrete to
find out how much fine aggregate is needed. Table 3.4 is used to obtain an estimated mass. Find
on the line for 1-1/2 in. (37.5 mm) maximum aggregate to the column for air-entrained concrete.
Read the estimated density as 3910 lb/yd3 (2320 kg/m3). Then, calculate the amount of fine
aggregate per cubic yard (meter) of concrete:

3910 lb – 28132803 lb = 10971107 lb (in.-lb units)
2320 kg – 1663 kg = 657 kg (SI units)
SUMMARY: Now there are estimated quantities for a cubic yard (meter) batch, containing:
 Water: 275 lb (163 kg)
 Cement: 598 lb (354 kg)
 Fine aggregate: 10971107 lb (657 kg)
 Coarse aggregate: 19401930 lb (1146 kg)
