MODULE 1(a) : D.C. CIRCUITS

1. A resistor of 12Ω is connected in series with a combination of 15Ω and 20Ω resistor in parallel.
A voltage of 120V is applied across the whole circuit. Find
i. Current taken from the supply.
ii. Voltage across 12Ω resistor.
2. A resistance R is connected in series with a parallel circuit comprising two resistances of 12
Ω and 8 Ω respectively. The total power dissipated in the circuit is 70W. When the applied
voltage is 20V. Calculate R.
3. State and explain ohm’s law and mention its limitations.
4. State and explain Kirchhoff’s laws.
5. Obtain the equation of equivalent resistance when resistances are connected in a) series &
b) parallel circuits.
6. Obtain an expression for current in a parallel branch.( Current Divider Rule )
7. Define Electrical Power & Energy. Write equation for them & mention their units.

MODULE 1(B): ELECTROMAGNETISM

1. State and explain faraday’s laws of electromagnetic induction.


2. State and explain Lenz’s law.
3. State Fleming’s right hand and Fleming’s left hand rules and their use in electromagnetism.
4. Explain the concept of self – inductance and derive the expression for the same and mention its unit.
5. Explain the concept of Mutual inductance and derive the expression for the same.
6. With examples clearly differentiate between statically and dynamically induced emf’s.
7. Define co-efficient of coupling.
8. Derive the relation between self inductance, mutual inductance and co-efficient of coupling.
9. Derive an expression for energy stored in the magnetic field.
10. Explain the concept of force on current carrying conductor placed in magnetic field.
11. An a air cored solenoid has a length of 50cms and a diameter of 2cms.calculate its inductance if it
has 500 turns and also find the energy stored in it, if the current raises from 0 to 10amps .

12. A coil of 300 turns wound on a core of non magnetic material has an a inductance of 10mH.calculate
(a) the flux produced by a current of 5amps (b) the average value of EMF induced when a current of 5A
is reversed in 8ms.

13. A coil of 1000 turns is wound on a silicon steel ring of relative permeability 1200. The ring has a
mean diameter of 10cm & cross- sectional area if 12 sq.cm. When a current of 4A flows through the coil.
Find
i. Flux in the core.
ii. Inductance of the coil.
iii. The E.M.F. induced in the coil if the flux falls to zero in 15milliseconds.
iv. Now, if another similar coil is placed such that 70% magnetic coupling exists between
the coils. Find the mutual Inductance.

14. If a current of 5A flowing in coil with 1000 turns wound on a ring of ferromagnetic material produces a flux of
0.5mWb in the ring. Calculate
i. Self-inductance of coil.
ii. E.M.F. induced in the coil when current is switched off & reaches zero value in 2msec.
iii. Mutual inductance between the coils, if a second coil with 750 turns is wound uniformly over
the first one.

15. Two identical coils of 1200 turns each are placed side by side such that, 60% of the flux produced by one coil
links the other. A current of 10A in the first coil, sets up a flux of 0.12 mWb. If the current in the first coil changes
from +10A to -10A in 20ms, Find
i. the self-inductance of the coils.
ii. the E.M.F’s induced in both the coils.
16. The coil of 1500 turns gives rise to a magnetic flux of 2.5mWb, when carrying a certain current. If the current
is reversed in 0.2sec, what is the average value of the e.m.f. induced in the coil?

17. Two coils having 1000 turns and 1600 turns respectively are placed close to each other such that, 60% of the
flux produced by one coil links the other. If a current of 10A, flowing in the first coil, produces a flux of 0.5mWb,
find the inductance of the second coil.

18. Two coils, A of 12000 turns and B of 15000 turns lie in parallel planes so that 45% of the flux produced by coil
A links coil B. A current of 5A in A produces 0.05mWb while the same current in B produces 0.075 mWb. Calculate
(a) mutual inductance. (b) Coefficient of coupling.
