2. The Control System

The Mobile Data Technologies frac pump system is a combination of hardware and software
engineered for personal safety and equipment protection while providing remote control of high-
pressure pumping equipment and monitoring of job data.

2.1. The Console

The mFPC Control Console houses the STW ESX-3XM Microcontroller which processes
control signals from the Local Control interface or from a PRIDE Computer. The STW module
is connected to the external sensors of the unit as well as to the Engine and Transmission
Control Modules. The system is capable of hardware and software control of engine throttle,
transmission shifting, and provides pressure and temperature monitoring as well as Instant
Neutral and Emergency Kill features. The functions of the Controller can be classified under
the categories of Power, Feedback Monitoring, and Control Functions.

2.1.1. Power
 Battery Cutoff Switch – The Battery Cutoff Switch is mounted between the Control
Console and the battery box on the trailer. All power to the Console is removed
when the switch is in the OFF position. To begin the power up process, first turn ON
the Battery Cutoff Switch.

Battery Cutoff Switch

No devices will power up with the Battery Cutoff Switch turned OFF. This should be
used for LOTO. When the switch is in OFF position, a lock will insert through the
lockout bracket and switch handle. Though most devices will not power up until the
Main Power Switch on the Console front panel is switched on, some components
will be connected and can drain the batteries over time.
Always remember to turn OFF the Battery Cutoff Switch after turning off the Main
Power Switch to preserve battery life.

 MAIN POWER Switch – The Main Power Switch is located on the front of the
Console panel.

MAIN POWER Switch

When the Main Power switch is turned ON, power is supplied to the Battery Voltage
gauge on the Console panel and to several additional components. A signal is sent

to the Timer Relay to start a countdown to full power up. This timer also counts
down to full power down when the Main Power Switch is turned off.
When shutting down the system, always allow the timer to countdown until the
Power/Fuse LED lamp (green) turns “OFF” to ensure the system has properly
shutdown before turning off the Battery Cutoff switch.
Once the Timer Relay has completed the count down, 24 VDC will be supplied to all
components of the Console, the Engine and Transmission Control Modules, and
sensors. When the Check Engine, Stop Engine, and Trans Fault LEDs begin to
flash, communication has been established between the STW Controller and the
Engine and Transmission Control Modules. Power will NOT be supplied to the ECM
or TCM key switches until the Ignition switch is turned ON.
 IGNITION Switch – The Ignition switch sends a signal to the STW Controller to turn
on Engine and Transmission Control Modules.
Both hardware and software E-Kills must be disabled and the STW Controller fully
booted and operational to supply Ignition power to either Control Module.

IGNITION Switch
 START Button – The START button activates the hydraulic start valve to crank the
engine.

standard network cable connection. The Control Selector switch should be set to
REMOTE (DATAVAN/LAPTOP). Power up the Console and Laptop. Verify connectivity.
4.1.2. Multiple Pumps to PRIDE Computer
When connecting multiple units to the PRIDE computer, always consider network
integrity as critical to the successful operation of the equipment. Each unit should be
connected to the Data Van (or Control Room) with standard approved network cables.
The cables should be routed to avoid damage from other equipment, process piping,
traffic, etc. The cable ends and the bulkhead connectors should be cleaned before the
connection is made. Defective cables should be clearly marked and removed from
service to avoid loss of control or reuse before being properly repaired. The Control
Selector switch should be set to REMOTE (DATAVAN/LAPTOP). Power up the Consoles
and PRIDE computer. Verify connectivity.

4.2. Operating the Equipment

4.2.1. Local Mode

STOP ENGINE – Activating this button turns off the Ignition signal to the ECM which shuts off the
fuel supply and stops the engine. This is the proper method of stopping the engine in ALL
situations except in the instance of a runaway engine. (See E-KILL)

Stop Engine on Selected Pump Stop Engine on Group Control

E-KILL – The E-Kill or Emergency Kill feature is to be used in the event of a runaway engine. A
runaway engine is caused by a fuel source entering the engine through the air intake system.
This could be from combustible gas or vapors in the air or oil mist from the engine. Shutting off
the fuel supply will not kill a runaway engine since it is being fueled externally by the air supply.
Shutting off the fuel and air supply is the proper method for killing an engine in this condition.

The E-Kill function can be activated in the Selected Pump Display or from the Master Control.
The Master E-Kill will shut down all units connected to the PRIDE system.

4.4. Shutdown Procedure

At the conclusion of the job, the entire system should be shut down properly to avoid the risk
of damage to the equipment or operating system. Follow this checklist to ensure proper
shutdown.
o COOL DOWN – Always allow the unit ample time to cool down before shutting the
engine off. Five minutes at idle should be adequate time.
o ENGINE SHUTDOWN – The engine can be shut down from the software in Selected
Pump Control by pressing the STOP ENGINE button. It can also be shut down by
switching the IGNITION toggle on the Console to the down position.
o EXIT SOFTWARE APPLICATION – Press the EXIT button in the lower left corner of
the PRIDE main screen. Press the YES button in the Closing Application pop-up box.
o POWER DOWN CONSOLE – Turn off the MAIN POWER Switch. The STW
Controller will begin to boot down. DO NOT turn off the Battery Cutoff Switch until the
POWER/FUSE LED has gone out.
REMINDER: When shutting down the system, always allow the timer to countdown
until the Power/Fuse LED lamp (green) turns off to ensure the system has properly
booted down before turning off the Battery Cutoff switch.
o BATTERY CUTOFF – Turn off the Battery Cutoff switch to avoid discharge of
batteries when not in use.

6. Frequently Asked Questions
1. What happens to the pump or pumps if communication is lost to the Remote Computer?
a. If communication from the Remote Computer is lost, the pump Controller will
continue operating from its last received commands. The STW Controller in the
Console will start a two minute countdown timer; the Control Status LED will start to
flash. If communication is restored within the two minute time frame, the Remote
Computer will regain control. The Controller can be switched to LOCAL control from
the Control Console Selector Switch. The Throttle, Gear, and Overtrip settings last
entered from the Remote Controller will remain in effect until changed locally. If
communication is not restored to the Remote Computer or taken over on the LOCAL
controls within the two minute countdown, the unit will Instant Neutral.
2. How can I adjust the Trip Pressure Setting when operating the pump in LOCAL Control
mode?
a. The default Trip Pressure Setting is 2000 PSI. This can only be adjusted by
connecting to a Remote Computer with PRIDE software.
3. Where do I adjust the Pump Efficiency to correct the calculated rate?
a. The Pump Efficiency setting can be accessed through the Selected Pump display
SETUP button. From the SETUP screen, select the FPC1STW – PUMP SETUP
button. Highlight the Parameter Value on the Pump Efficiency line and type in the
new value. Verify the number is correct. Press SAVE & CLOSE.
