 INTRODUCTION
A short story is a short work of fiction, as we know, is prose wrting about imagined
events and characters. Prose writing differs from poetry in that it does not deepend on verses,
meters or rhymes for its organization and presentation.
 THEORY

Character : a person or sometimes even animal who takes part in the action of short story or
another literary work
Plot : series of events and characters actions that relate to the central conflict.
Setting : the time and place in which happens.

Conflic : a struggle between two people or somethings in a short story.
 ANALYSIS
 SUMMARY OF STORY
A beautiful mind is a short story based on the true story of Jhon Nash, a Nobel Laureate
Ecconomics. He was born on June 13 th 1928 in Bluefield,West Virginia,U.S. He got a
scholarship in famous Universitiy with his friend Martin Hensen.He also met his roommate
named Charles Herman and he had nieced named Cilik Marcee.Jhon is a unique student.He
does not like study in class, he prefers to study in outside and observe the surrounding and
self-thought.
Not popular with his fellow student, he distinguish himself as being rather than arrogant
and odd. He always observing the situation of seclusion in order to get his creative ideas
naturally. In Jhon career’s he only have Charles and his niece a little Marcee.They talk and
play together.Even though he unpopular among his fellow, his lecture recognized his
potential.
A few later Jhon’s life has changed, after he got invited to the Pentagon to break down a
code sent by the Uni Soviet. Whereas Pentagon is not a real it just Jhon ’s imagination.
Because he often to think hard and make him always halusinate. Even when he became a
lecture in Massachusetts technology Institute he still halusinate. Someday, he met with a
woman named Alicia. She is his pupil who have a beautiful face and attractive. He fell in love
with Alicia because she is different from another woman he had ever met. But their
relationship have a lot of obstacles. One of them are Jhon’s weirdness. As long as he date with
Alicia, Alicia never know that Jhon has changed until she aware when they have been
married.
Alicia feel that Jhon behave strangly,always come home late at night,speak something
strange and difficult to understand and the climax is when she saw Jhon stand up beside the
window look at the outside. She come to jhon and ask him.But instead she was snapped by
Jhon. She was surprised with Jhon’s behave. So that, she ask him,what happened with Jhon.
But Jhon never told her and made her curious. Because of her curious she phone someone.
She met when she came to National Mathematics Conference Harvard University where Jhon
is a announcer. In there Jhon also behave strangely and exit through the next stage suddenly.
While he presents he looks afraid and worried. Is that why he come out from the hall.
After she phone Dr.Rosen, He ask him to help her. She told what was she feel. And then
Dr.Rosen bring Jhon to the Mental Hospital. In there Jhon have tied his hands to limit his
movement. Jhon always try to run away. He also saw his friend Charles who stare him with a
sad face. Charles never know with his bestfriend’s condition. After that Jhon was taken by
Mental Hostpital’s room isolation. In the next day Alicia was invited by Dr.Rosen to visited
her husband and got more explain about Jhon. Dr.Rosen told Alicia that Jhon suffer
“SCHIZOPHERNIA”disease. Alicia was surprised and looks sad when heard of her husband’s
illness. Then Dr.Rosen told her about Schizophernia. Alicia can not believe because her
husband had a mental illness. After that she told everyting to Dr.Rosen about what was Jhon’s
suffer in a while.
A year later, Alicia had given birth to their first child. Jhon had recovered from his
illness. He come out from the Mental Hospital and live together with his wife and child. Even
though he has to still drank ad drug but his life has changed. He can live human’s normally
and his life was happy ending.

 CHARACTERS
 Jhon Fober Nash : Protagonist (Main Character)
Based on the story above, Jhon Fober Nash is main character. It can be seen that Jhon
always appears in every story. His character never disappears even though any another
characters. He has been turned up in the first paragraph“John Fober Nash, born on
June 13, 1928 he was born in Bluefield, West Virginia, U.S. In this world John is
known as an American Mathematician and Economy, in 1947, he became a student at
the famous University of Princeton, John with Martin Hensen who was a prestigious
"Carnegie" recipient of scholarships in Mathematics he also met his roommate named
Charles Herman (a literary student) he had a niece named CilikMarcee, a beautiful
daughter. John is a unique student he does not like studying in class, he prefers to
study outside and observe the surroundings and self-taught.”

From the story, we can see that Jhon is unpopular student.Why? Because he has a
unique habit. He likes to study in the outside than in the class. He also a critical
thinking’s person. He likes argued someone’s opinion.

It can be seen in the quotation below :

“John is a unique student he does not like studying in class, he prefers to study
outside and observe the surroundings and self-taught.”

“Looking for and observing the situation of seclusion in order to get his creative ideas
naturally, in John's career only with Charles his roommate and nephew Little Marcee
they talked and played together and spent watu together, under pressure to get his
doctorate he was asked to publish something, but he wanted to publish his own
original idea until when his inspiration came when he and his friends talked about
how to approach a group of women in a shop, Martin quoted Adam Smith and
supported "Everyone for himself" but John argued that a cooperative approach would
result in more successful opportunities, then John quickly left the tavern and headed
to his room and corrected the theory of "Adam Smith" he developed a new concept
that governed the dynamics and published articles about the concept. Because of the
concept he published, then he got a job offer at the Massachusetts Technology
Institute..

Based on my opinion, Jhon has a complicated problems. Frst ,He did not realize that what
have been happened with his was only halusination. Second, he never tell his problem to his
 wife or someone else. Is that why, he always feel worried and afraid. Until his wife realize
that any something with Jhon.

 William Parcher :Antagonist

William Parcher is character that formed by Jhon’s imagination. He makes Jhon feel
like a secret agent in Pentagon. As we know Pentagon is not real. It is only Jhon ’s
imagination.
“ a few later Nash’s life has changed after nash was invited to the Pentagon to break
down a code sent by Uni Soviet”
“Then Parcher took Professor Nash to a secret agent to breaks a secret code”
William Parcher will be appear when Jhon Nash alone. Because Jhon will be start to
think hard and it will be form a new character where is the patient will be think that is
real. In fact, that is only their imagination.
“At the time after Nash’s class wanted to go home he met a spy who watched him at
Pentagon,named William Parcher. And he introduce himself.”
 Alicia : Protagonist
Alicia is a girl who never give up to get what she wants. She will be struggle for her
dream. When she fell in love with Jhon, She try to ask Jhon for get dinner together.
“Then Alicia left Prof.'s room. John Nash, then arrived on the promised day to have
dinner together at a romantic party, John looks handsome with his black suit and
Alicia also looks elegant with her black dress, they then, eat together, take pictures
and also dance together.”
As the story goes on, after they got dinner together. They were become a couple.
Alicia really love Jhon. Their relationship were so serious. Jhon wants Alicia to be his
wife. “On Alicia's birthday at a restaurant they both dated Nash to arrive late at that time,
then he congratulated Alicia on a happy birthday and gave him a special gift that was a very
beautiful sparkling diamond, then Nash asked a continuation of their relationship and Nash
invited Alicia to marry him with a happy face Alicia answered and wanted to marry John.”
She is Jhon’s wife.Before she got married with Jhon she is a student in
Massachussetts Technology Institute. She is beautiful and attractive woman.”While at
the Massachusetts Technology Institute, worked as lecture,the first time he taught in
class he met a beautiful woman named Alicia Larde”.
From the story above, It can be conclude that Alicia is a girl who never give up until
she gets what she wants. She really love her husband even her husband has a mental
illness. She never go away from her husband. She always accompany him until he can
life like a normal person in general. Even, she has been by Jhon, but she still stay
beside Jhon.
 Charles Herman and Martin Hensen : Foil Character
 They are Jhon’s friends.One is Jhon’s roommate “He also met his roommate named
Charles Herman” And one is Jhon’s friend from Princenton University “He became a
student at the famous university, Jhon with Martin Hensen……….”
The characters of Charles Herman and Martin Hensen are the foil characters. They
rarely appears in the story. They will appears when they have dialogue with Jhon
Nash or when the writer wants Charles’s character appear. After that their character
never disappear until end of the story.
“Then Charles appeared and said "Hay my roommate is Royal"

We can see from the quotation below :

“They then talked in Charles Park about what had happened to him and introduced
his nephew Marcee, and they talked about their daily lives, Nash told of his current
work including his new job as an eye, and Nash also told Charles about his love and
his relationship with Alicia, to the point that Charles was surprised Nash told him
that he wanted to propose to Alicia on his birthday. Then Charles also took part and
embraced Nash’s friend who had been his roommate.”

 Marcee : Foil Character

Marcee is Jhon’s niece. From the story above, the author did not explain more about
Marcee character. The author only told that Marcee is Jhon’s niece. So, we were not
really sure about Marcee’s character. The character also rarely appear. The writer only
turned up the character in fisrt paragraph and in the middle paragraph.
I don’t know why? Maybe in the first paragraph is only to introduce who someone
around Nash. And in the middle, maybe only for improvisation.
Look at the quotation below “
“He had a niece named Little Marceenamed a beautiful daughter”.
From the quotation above, we can conclude that the writer only to introduce someone
who life around Jhon Nash. Now we can look the next quotation :
“In a Nash park reading a magazine and seeing a few words he considered a secret
code at the time Marcee stood before him.

Marcee: What are you doing?

Nash: I tried to separate repetitive patterns from magazines, and not you?

Marcee: You talk funny Mr. Nash (smile)

Nash: do I know you?

 Marcee: My uncle says you're very smart but not so good, so I won't care if you're
angry with me.

Nash: Who is your uncle?”

As we can see from the quotation, can be conclude that Marcee only appear in the first
and in the middle paragraph. In the next paragraph until end of the story, Marcee
never appears again. The character probably is just for the extras.

In fact the characters of Charles and Marcee was only Jhon imagination,it was from
the last story when Dr.rosen said that Charles was unreal.Mostly all of the characters
was formed by Jhon imagination except Alicia and Dr.Rosen.Cause the story is tell
about schizophernia so that the writer wrote the characters only for the extra.

 Dr.Rosen : Protagonist
Dr. Rosen is mental doctor. He is a Jhon’s doctor.He met Jhon when Jhon attended in
the “National Mathematics Conference Harvard University”. He was over there
because Alicia call him. And ask him to help her. He is an old man.
He is Psychiatrist who help Alicia to treat Jhon.
“and until in front of Nash's yard he saw someone in front of him, then he looked back and
saw an old man named Dr. Rosen, he and some of his men turned out to be a psychiatrist
contacted by his wife Alicia.”

As we know, the character from Dr.Rosen only appear in the End of story. Maybe the
writer wants that Jhon’s illness known in the last story and the ending of story all of
the characters know that Jhon was not normal.

 SETTING
 Time
The story was happen in a whole day. The writer did not explain more a specific time.
She/He only told that the story was happen in everyday. In the dialogue between the
characters, we did not know that was happen in the morning, noon, or evening. Cause
the writer never told about it. But, from the dialogue between Alicia and Jhon Nash
maybe the time was in the morning or middle noon. Because they were talk after their
class had been done.
“Alicia: What are you doing? (ask John)

John: Secret
Alicia: Everyone waits for half an hour.

John: for?

Alicia: Class, you missed class today.

John: oh ... I guessed that nobody missed me (laugh).

In the next story, the writer just told the specific of time. Where is Jhon and Alicia had
dinner together. So, it will be happen in the evening. Exact, on Friday at 8.00 pm in
the evening.

“John: if you leave your address at my office I'll pick you up Friday, 8:00 PM, and
we'll eat. (with a smile).

Then Alicia left Prof.'s room. John Nash, then arrived on the promised day to have
dinner together at a romantic party”

I thought the writer prefer to take a time in the evening than in the morning. Why?
Because in the next story was take in the night at Alicia and Jhon ’s house. It was
happen when Alicia feel weird with her husband’s behavior and the she came to him
and turned on the light.
“comes home late at night, looks tired when she comes home and speaks something
strange and difficult to understand. Nash also behaves strangely while teaching in
class he looks alarmed as if he was being watched, at night at their home at that time
Alicia was pregnant and pregnant with their child, Nash returned to behaving
strangely he often turned around looking outside his window feeling watched by spy
agents and William parcher, Nash was terrified by the tense conditions and Alicia
came to him and turned on the lights of the room, then Nash shockedly said in a high
tone to Alicia

Nash: Why did you turn on the lights? (out of fear of being spied by)”.

Next story, the writer did not tell the specific of time. In my opinion, the story
happened between in the morning or in the noon. It was the writer tell about Jhon
Nash who attended in National Mathematics Conference. In the same time, Jhon Nash
met Dr.Rosen when Jhon came out from the conference. As we know, Jhon Nash has a
mental disorder because of his illness he met with Dr.Rosen. Then, in the ending the
 writer did not tell the specific of time. The writer explain that Alicia had been given
birt for their fisrt children.

In case, the story happened in the middle of 19s century. Because the writer start the
story at 1947 where was Jhon Nash became a student in the University of Pricenton.
So,automatically the story will be continue from year by year even though there is not
specific of time in the story. Furthemore, we can know in the end of story the writer
wrote of words “1 year later, Alicia had given birth to their first ank and Nash had
recovered from his illness and had come out and lived at home with his family”. It is
mean the story happened continually.

 Place
In general, the setting of place happened in the United State. It come from at the
beginning of story where the writer said that Jhon Nash was born in the Bluefield,
West Virginia, U.S. Next story, it was happened in the one of University in the
US,especially in the University of Pricenton. At the time the writer did not tell the
specific story, it was probably only to introduce the place of the story. After that, the
writer start to explain the story and the place. Lets see the quotation to known what
was happened and where is it.
“John Fober Nash, born on June 13, 1928 he was born in Bluefield, West Virginia,
U.S. In this world John is known as an American Mathematician and Economy, in
1947, he became a student at the famous University of Princeton,…………..”
“……then Nash managed to decode it and explain the contents and purpose of the
code and then gave an instruction to the agent agent at the Pentagon, there he saw
someone whose eyes were watching him, after doing his work there Nash returned to
the Massachusetts Technology Institute……..”
Based on the quotations above, it can be seen the writer use Pentagon to the story
even though Pentagon unreal but the author still write the place.
The story goes on, the writer explain where are the story happened. At this scene, the
place begin to show .For example in the Jho’s room, when Alicia ask Jhon about his
activity. And then in the restaurant where they were get dinner together and continue
in Jhon’s room again. After that the story took place in the park where Jhon read
magazine and saw some of secret code.Loot at the quotations below :
“With a slightly gloomy face Alicia still stood in front of John and then asked.

John: Are you still here?

Alicia: Well, I'm still here……….””

“Then Alicia left Prof.'s room. John Nash, then arrived on the promised day to have
dinner together at a romantic party,………………………….”

We can see, that the place is more specific than the first paragraph. It was mean that
the writer had been explored the story.

Next, the place was in the restaurant, as we know in the beginning of the story the
writer also have written at the restaurant but in this scene, the writer has a different
background why the writer use again the place. Because at those story was place
Alicia’s celebrated her birthday and in those place, Jhon Nash ask Alicia to be his wife
too.Then, they were get married, but in the middle of their household Alicia felt
something strange with her husband’s behavior. She felt Jhon always said something
but difficult to understand and Jhon often came home late. That was happened in the
night at their room when Alicia saw Jhon stand up in the near of window and looked
for the outside.” On Alicia's birthday at a restaurant they both dated Nash to arrive
late at that time, then he congratulated Alicia on a happy birthday and gave him a
special gift that was a very beautiful sparkling diamond, then Nash asked a
continuation of their relationship and Nash invited Alicia to marry him with a happy
face Alicia answered and wanted to marry John.”

“And they live together in one house, as long as with her husband Alicia feeling
something strange from Nash, she often behaves strangely, comes home late at night,
looks tired when she comes home and speaks something strange and difficult to
understand. Nash also behaves strangely while teaching in class he looks alarmed as
if he was being watched, at night at their home………………….”

Next scene, the writer wrote tha place was happen in the Mental Hsopital, before
those scene, the writer has written at the Hall of Harvard University first. Still in the
hospital, Jhon was brought by Dr.Rosen’s men into the room. He sat in the chair with
his hand and feet was tied. From the scene, Dr.Rosen began to know that Jhon has
mental illness that was “SCHIZOPHERNIA”. Dr.Rosen known from Jhon’s reaction.
He like look his bestfriend Charles whereas infront of him no one people only
Dr.Rosen with his mens. Then Dr.Rosen told to Alicia that his husband has mental
illness where the suffer experience hallucinations. At this scene, the place was happen
in the Hospital.

“Prof. John Nash was invited to attend the "National Matematics Conference Hravard
University" with a slightly worried face, there he accidentally met Charles and
Marcee who were playing together, they were very greeting and embracing, when
Nash's event was asked to speak in front attendees and explain economic and
mathematical formulas…………….”

“……….Dr. Rosen came with a sedative injection and injected him with Nash and took
him to the mental hospital of Dr. Rosen. When Nash realized he was sitting in the
room………….”

In the last story, the place was happened in their house. The story was begin after a
year passed. And Jhon has came out from the hospital. But, schyzophernia’s suffer can
not straight recovery. It must be step by step. Is that why Jhon still hallucinate.
Because of the Jhon’s hallucinate Alicia call Dr.Rosen again why Jhon act like that
again. Dr.Rosen said to Alicia that Jhon must be ignor his imagination if he wants to
recover. So Jhon tried to do what Dr.Rosen suggest everyday until he can life like a
normally person in general.

“………in his room he saw that there were words in the majalh which he considered
were a code from the rahas agent he, and he saw someone throw a stone into his
window and he was surprised and tried to come out to see who was there, when he
came out he saw someone in a military uniform who ran into his backyard then………
."

 PLOT
A plot from the short story is Dramatic or Progressive Plot.Because the story is
cronologicals structur which frist paragraph establishes the setting and
conflicts.There is not a flashback or time past,the author tell the story continually.
 Conflict
The conflict is the protagonist against Self. The story is tell about someone who suffer
SCHIZOPHERNIA where is they feel halusinate everyday. They will be formed a
new character with their imagination and they also will be behave strangly.
 The conflict is start from when Jhon and his friend talk about how to approach a
group of women in a shop until he mets William Parcher. Then the conflict continue
when Alicia ask him to got dinner together.
"...when his inspiration came when he and his friends talked about how to approach a group
of women in a shop....."
"Alicia: I want to ask you, Prof. John Nash do I usually offer you a dinner?

John: Oh yeah, Table for one protemus in the chain to the rock, with the bird spinning

above (head) do you know what it feels like? (Reply John with strange behavior)

They both laughed ...

John: if you leave your address at my office I'll pick you up Friday, 8:00 PM, and we'll eat. (with a
smile)....."

 Rising action
It is start when Alicia left Jhon’s room until Jhon meet with Charles and Marcee in the
park. They talked together even Jhon told that he has a relationship with Alicia and
want to Alicia be his wife.
"They then talked in Charles Park about what had happened to him and introduced his
nephew Marcee, and they talked about their daily lives, Nash told of his current work
including his new job as an eye, and Nash also told Charles about his love and his relationship
with Alicia, ....."
 Climax
The climax of the story is happen when Alicia feel that Jhon’s behave was
strange.And it is continue until Jhon’s treated in Mental Hospital. In the mental
hospital the doctor told Alicia that Jhon has mental disease that is Schyzophernoa
someone who has imagination and made the suffer formed a new characters and felt
that it was real.
"Nash also behaves strangely while teaching in class he looks alarmed as if he was being
watched........."
"but unfortunately Nash was caught by the men of Dr. Rosen Nash rebelled while saying "he
is from Russia, he is Russia" Dr. Rosen came with a sedative injection and injected him with
Nash and took him to the mental hospital of Dr. Rosen....."
 Denoument
During Jhon to be patient in the hospital,Alicia never forgot to visiited him.She
always accompany her husband everyday until Jhon has courage to tell everything
what has happened all this time. Then a year later Alicia given birth for their first
baby, at same time Jhon also had recovered from his illnes although he has to
consume a drugs everyday.
 "year later, Alicia had given birth to their first ank and Nash had recovered from his illness
and had come out and lived at home with his family with the help of drugs that Nash had to
consume every day ....."
 Ending
The ending was happened when Dr.Rosen suggest to Jhon that he could ignore them
and explain to him that they were only in unreal world of dimension. Finally Jhon try
to began ignoring what have happened in his life until he can life like human
normally.
"Then Dr. Rosen suggested to Nash that he should not ignore them and explain to him that
they were only in an unreal world of dimensions, and Nash began trying to ignore what
happened to William Parcher, Charles Herman And Little Marcee, with the help and support
of faithful Alicia....."
 THEME
The story is tell about mental illness and Someone who always halusinate. It had been
wrote in the middle of story when the character was in Hospital.The doctor told Alicia
about Jhon's disease that is Schyzophernia and Alicia shocked when she heard that.
So, I conclude that the story is tell abouy Psychology and Mental disease.
 POINT OF VIEW
The narrative point of view is OMNISCIENT NARRATOR because there are words
of She/He in the story. Also the author known almost half of th story.
The autthor also use INTERNAL NARRATOR.Because there are dialogue between
the characters and a conversation in the story. Not only the author who know the plot
of story,but the characters too.
Omniscient narrator can we see in thr quotation below:
"John Fober Nash, born on June 13, 1928 he was born in Bluefield, West Virginia, U.S. In this
world John is known as an American Mathematician and Economy...."
Internal narrator can we see at the quotation below :
"William Parcher: Professor Nash

John Nash: (Looking)

William Parcher: William Parcher Secret agent, big brother ready to serve you

John Nash: What are you doing at the Defense Department? What are you here for? To raise my
salary?

William Parcher: Let's walk the road ....."

 CONCLUSION
In case the story is tell about Jhon Fober Nash who has Scizophernia where is
he always form a new characters in unreal world dimension with his
imagination. Jhon Nash is intelligent student as long as he study. But he
always acting weird.He does not like study in the class and he has crictical
thinking and always arguing with another argument.
He has a wife named Alicia,his student in the University,his wife is so
loyal,because she always accompany Jhon during to be patient in the mental
hospital.
