Ryka: Famous

Artists have been making mosaics for centuries, but, unfortunately for us, it wasn’t until the
Renaissance that artists in any field begin to be recognized for their work. During this same
period, mosaics fell out of fashion and didn’t see a revival until the 19th century. This means
most of the most famous mosaic artists are from modern times.
a. Sonia King

Sonia King is an active mosaic artist, creating work for art galleries as well as for homes and
other buildings. She has exhibited her work around the world. Her work is made from a
variety of materials, including stone, tile, gemstones, and minerals.

b.Maurice Bennett

For a more unusual choice of material, you have Maurice Bennett. The New Zealander was
famous for using toast to create his artwork — he would burn the bread in different places to
create the pixel he wanted. Bennett’s mosaics tend to feature portraits of famous people,
including Barack Obama. He also made a mosaic recreation of the Mona Lisa.

c. Antoni Gaudí

Antoni Gaudí used a striking combination of modernism and mixed media in his mosaics.
His style is highly unique and distinct, featuring themes that matter most to him: nature,
religion, and architecture. His method was to create his work in three-dimensional models,
adding details as he went, rather than planning his art beforehand.

d. Peter Mason

UK artist Peter Mason creates pop art mosaics with a twist — they are made entirely from
postage stamps. The result is pixelated, subdued images. especially in his portrait work.
However, Mason also makes mosaics of geometrical shapes and landscapes. Each of his
pieces uses up to 20,000 postage stamps and can take eight weeks to finish.

e. Isaiah Zagar

Isaiah Zagar brings mosaics to the streets, building murals around his hometown of
Philadelphia. Most of his more than 200 mosaics are on or around South Street, some of
which are three dimensional. He uses a variety of materials, including city trash like bottles,
bike wheels, and found objects

Marie: Practical use

Mosaic are famous for being used as an interior decoration. Because of its modern style and
different color variants, they are perfect to go in any part of the home. Notice how hotels and
guest rooms have glass mosaic tiles mixed with their interior, and you will realize how
mosaic tiles offer endless possibilities as decorations. Below are some of the most practical
uses for mosaic tiles:

a. Bathroom Mosaic tiles can add vibrancy to any room and the shower area is one of the
most practical locations where this tile can be installed because of its resistance to water.

b. Kitchen Apart from the shower area, the kitchen is one ideal place where mosaic tiles
would be functional. Aside from enhancing decors as a backsplash for the kitchen sink, they
are normally solid and durable materials that are able to withstand the test of time. Mosaic
tiles can also be put to kitchen walls to make that boring area in your house stand out and
blend in with modernity of your cabinets. The most common and appropriate to use are
limestone mosaics which have different designs to choose from: natural, polished, flamed,
hammered and beveled.
c. Swimming Pool Area There are quality mosaic tiles that can be used practically for
outdoors. A good example is using glass mosaic tiles in your swimming pool area. This is to
further spruce up lighting and brightness under direct sunlight. In contrast to using colorful
mosaic tiles, tiles with bright colors and bold patterns are also good options to be
incorporated in this area.

d. Feature art

Mosaics have been used for centuries to create beautiful, intricate works of art on walls,
floors and household objects. Using the ancient Greeks as your inspiration, you could create
your very own work of wall or floor art using mosaic tiles . Not only do they add color and
life to your home, but they can also last for a very long time provided that you exert enough
effort to maintain it.
