Annotated Bibliography
My essay will describe the type of negative effects that can come from social media.
Specifically, I will be focusing on the impacts of adolescents when social media is involved in
their daily lives. I want to know the type of changes occur when a child is using social media in
large amount. Also, I want to know what kind of health consequences can come from this usage.

the source is to share the positives and negatives that are associated with social media. The
positives they mention all include, the increased expression, creativity, and less restrictions on
these factors. The negatives include, privacy issues, sexualization, and online predators.
The writer’s purpose of this article is to give both sides of the views about social media

The writer, Angela Barnes, is credible because every example she gives is backed up with
a citation of the exact source that was used. Also, she explains both viewpoints of the use of
social media which can show she is unbiased. The writer did not insert her personal opinion
within the article as well. The source is reliable because it is coming from a well known
University. Before the University published this article, facts were checked and the article was
edited.
I will use several pieces of information within my paper. I will discuss some of the
positives that were given, which previously I was unaware about. The writer discussed the
increased risk of online predators which is a valuable topic that needs to be introduced in my
paper. Also, the writer gave examples on how social media can lead to different personality

“How Using Social Media Affects Teenagers” by Rachel Ehmke is an article written for
the Child Mind Institute. The Child Mind Institute is an educational website concerning the
health of children. This article set out to portray how social media is impacting the mental health
acceptance. If they fail to do this, they are ridiculed online. When dealing with young females,
there is a development of low self esteem by feeling pressure to look a certain way.
The writer’s purpose is to express the concerns that are being raised when it pertains to
social media use in teenagers. More and more parents are becoming aware of the increased
dependence their children have with their mobile devices. The author is attempting to educate

credible because it shows she has done her research because there are a lot of specific examples
that are cited within the article. Also, she does not put her personal opinion into the article but
rather she only states the facts she has found. Child Mind Institute is a reliable source overall
because they have many professionals that look over every article to ensure the information is
correct. This organization does their own specific research studies on several topics as well.
I will use this source to support my research question in a few ways. This article does a
great job in describing cyberbullying and the effects in can have on teenagers. The topic of
cyberbullying is crucial to understand in order to get some of my points across. Another factor of
the article I will use, is how they describe how young females can develop low self esteem. Then
from this low self esteem, how it can manifest into other health concerns. This is a big topic that
Kevin Eyres is being interviewed about “Social Media for Social Impact”. This source

The purpose of this interview was to describe the different types of media and how they
are changing daily life which needs to be closely monitored. The audience for this piece are
those who have become caught up in the simplicity of texting and other forms of social
communication. It is aimed at those who have become reliable on these social interactions rather
than forming interpersonal bonds. The page it was produced on is interested in the growth of
technology so it could have impacted the idea that social media is growing.
The person being interviewed is Kevin Eyres. He is a credible source because he was the
MD of Linkedin for several years. Eyres has seen the impact of social media first hand with this
company. He has seen how it has grown over the last few years and how people he has worked
with have changed. The source does seem reliable because they do not include any biases and
seem to have people speaking on topics they have personal knowledge on.
I will use several points that Eyres explains. One of these, is that social media is blocking
social interaction because people are not going to get coffee but rather sending a simple text.
Also, he describes examples on how our society as a whole is now less social than ever before.
There was another point he made that social media is a distraction when you are face to face with
others. There was conversation about the future impacts of social media and how social norms
will change.

I will use this information in my paper to discuss mainly how social media is negatively
impacting the mental health of adolescents. This is a major argument in my paper and the article
provides examples of how there is a decline in mental health for those who use social media on
such volume. The information given is important to show that there a serious health

Associated with Poor Sleep Quality, Anxiety, Depression and Low Self-Esteem.” Journal
of Adolescence, vol. 51, Aug. 2016, pp. 41–49. EBSCOhost,
doi:10.1016/j.adolescence.2016.05.008.
The authors of this article are Heather Cleland Woods and Holly Scott. This research
article was published in August of 2016. The source was obtained using the sinclair library
resource and it was published by the Journal of Adolescence. The main idea behind this article is
to show some negative consequences that come from too much social media use. These factors
include low sleep quality, higher anxiety levels, and low self-esteem. This was an actual research
study that was completed and found their expected results of the negative outcomes.
The writer's purpose of this article is to show and explain the findings that were shown
from the research experiment. There is an outline of the methods that were used within as well. I
would say the audience of the article could be those that are concerned with someone they know
usage of social media. These individuals could be parents or even coworkers. The context in
which it was written does not have much effect on the information shared. Yet, the journal that
was used focuses only on adolescents and not others that might be impacted.
The writers are Heather Cleland Woods and Holly Scott, who are both credible in the
information that is provided. This is a lab report of an experiment that was completed. Within
this report, the methods used is thoroughly explained. All the information that needs to be in a
scientific research study was completed. The result section provides the reasons for the
conclusions that were made. The source is reliable because it is an academic journal that
increased social media use can experience. This includes a decrease in the quality of sleep that is
had by the individual. This is an important topic that not many other articles have even
mentioned. Also, I will use the information they have given about there being an increase in
anxiety.
