Rockfon offer a wide range of edge The solutions vary from concealed, semi-concealed to exposed
grid systems. On the following pages you can find an overview
options that enable you to create the and a description of all the options.

exact ceiling expression you want. • Concealed grid ceilings

• Semi-concealed grid ceilings
• Exposed grid ceilings

In the table on page 6 & 7 you can easily find the products with
the edge you’re looking for.
12

Concealed grid ceilings All the edge types below can be used to create a concealed grid
ceiling solution.
B C
Minimalist and elegant. These two concepts aptly describe ceiling
solutions with a concealed grid expression.

D M
A concealed grid ceiling system can be suspended, directly
fastened, or bonded with adhesive to the soffit.

With no visible grid, even ceilings that contain a variety of service

installations such as lighting, ventilation and smoke detectors,
will appear as a calm and discreet monolithic surface in the room.

existing ceiling surface.

The C edge is primarily used when you

want to mount the tiles on a vertical or 30°

you wish to retain accessibility to the ceiling

D edge tiles have C edges on two opposite
sides and D edges on the adjacent sides. Tiles
with a D edge are fully demountable.

M 6 5.5

characteristic shadow expression. If you

want to strengthen the shadow effect you

can use black grid profiles. Tiles with an M M2

edge can be demounted.

13

Semi-concealed grid ceilings E15 E24

The play of light and shade has always been an important design element.
E15 E24
It is used where visual impact has great significance. Or to create a special effect.

By combining the shape of the ceiling tile edges with the width and
colour of the suspension system, arresting and distinctive expressions
can be created which contribute to the overall architectural expression of the space.

Ceilings for semi-concealed grid ceiling have an E edge.

The E edge is available in four versions:

E 5

A ceiling constructed with E edge tiles

is installed in an exposed, but recessed

15-40
grid system. As the grid system is slightly E (Leaning)

8-10
recessed it creates a shadow effect between
the tiles. Tiles with an E edge can be
5
mounted in a grid system with either 15mm
or 24mm wide profiles. When tiles are
mounted with the narrower 15mm profiles,

15-20
E (Straight)
the grid system becomes less dominant in

8
the final ceiling expression. Ceiling tiles with
an E edge can be demounted.

Exposed grid ceilings A15 A24

An exposed grid system in a ceiling provides the room with a simple and
structured expression which accentuates the shape of the room.
Used to define specific functional areas in a room,
the ceiling can contribute to increasing user friendliness and
be used as a visual backdrop to elegantly emphasise particular architectural details.

Ceilings for fully exposed grid systems have an A edge. The A edge is available in two versions:

A
12-20

A ceiling solution with an A edge tile is a A

cost effective solution as it provides easy
access to the installations hidden by the
ceiling. Tiles with an A edge are also the
perfect complement to concealed and semi-
concealed ceilings, e.g. when used as a
perimeter trim. Tiles with an A edge can be
mounted in grid systems with either 15mm
or 24mm wide profiles. When tiles are
mounted with the narrower 15mm profiles,
the grid system becomes less dominant in
the final ceiling expression. Tiles with an
A edge can be demounted.
14 Tile dimensions and ceiling layout
Rockfon ceilings provide you with By combining different module sizes you can make even small
rooms appear visually larger just as you can consciously use the
extensive design freedom and ceiling design in large spaces to define areas or functions thereby
contributing to increased well-being and user friendliness.

Why you should choose Rockfon

Highest class of sound absorption
• B y nature, Rockfon ceilings, wall absorbers and baffles have excellent sound absorption properties.
• Aesthetically pleasing smooth surfaces – without reliance on aesthetically challenging acoustical
‘perforations’ or ‘holes’.
• All declared values are tested in independent and certified laboratories.

Best sound absorption in the speech frequency range

• R ockfon ceilings perform even better in the speech frequency range contributing to better speech
intelligibility.

Best combination of sound absorption and sound insulation

• O nly Rockfon Sonar dB tiles can provide both Class A sound absorption and a high level of sound
insulation with Dn,f,w values up to 44 dB.
• Extensive sound insulation documentation from certified laboratories e.g. with light fittings, sound barriers
and absorbing overlay material in plenum.

Best multi-angle sound absorption

• D
ue to the acoustical porosity of stone wool and the specially formulated, thin and acoustically ‘open’ surfaces,
Rockfon ceilings efficiently absorb sound from all incident angles.

* aw and absorption class is measured at 200mm construction height unless otherwise specified.
** Dn,f,w value is measured in a lab according to ISO 10848-2. The total sound insulation of a construction is dependent on a lot of factors,
e.g. partition walls, celing type (e.g. material, tile dimensions and edge types), cut throughs and connections.
*** For baffles and islands, sound data are expressed as the Equivalent Absorption Area (m²) per single item,
and data are dependent on the distance between the items.

AN ADDITIONAL BENEFIT
OF ROCKFON COMPARED
TO PERFORATED SOUND
ABSORBERS

Rockfon ceilings have a uniform, non

perforated, acoustically ‘porous/open’
nature which gives them the ability
to not only absorb sound at random
incidence but also at shallow angles.
In large spaces, such as open plan
offices and receptions, you may have
experienced the undesirable effect of
conversations or ringing phones on one
side of the room being clearly heard
on the other side. This disturbing effect
can be experienced when perforated
plaster board ceilings or perforated
metal ceilings are used whereas Rockfon
ceilings solve this issue due to their
excellent multi angle absorption.

WEIGHTED SOUND ABSORPTION COEFFICIENT (aw)

Calculated in accordance with ISO 11654 using the practical sound
absorption coefficient αp values at standard frequencies and comparing
them with a reference curve. The practical sound absorption coefficient
αp is the average of the three 1/3 octave αs values centred on the octave
band frequency and rounded in steps of 0.05. The αw reference curve
is shifted downwards in increments of 0.05. This shifts the reference
curve to the point where the sum of the negative deviations from the
measured values is ≤ 0.10. When this level is reached, the
αw value is recorded as the value of the reference curve at 500 Hz. αw
is communicated by all suspended ceiling suppliers in Europe as it is
the method which has been adopted as the norm for CE marking of
suspended ceilings.

DIRECT SOUND INSULATION

The direct sound insulation of a ceiling expressed as the sound
reduction index Rw measures the reduction of sound passing
through the suspended ceiling. High values of Rw mean good
direct sound insulation.

A ceiling with high sound reduction index Rw is extremely

important when exposed to excessive noise from service
installations in the plenum or when the sound insulation
performance of a separating floor construction needs to be
improved.

Noise from service installations in the plenum is greatly reduced by

ceilings with a high sound reduction index (Rw).

be considered. Appropriate lighting conditions, enhanced fire insulation of the noise source so that they affect as few people as
safety, and in some cases high levels of hygiene are some of the possible. Where this is not possible, acoustic screening using wall
key factors. However, in industrial applications, sound levels are absorbers and baffles will help to absorb the excess noise.

** aw and absorption class is measured at 200mm construction height unless otherwise specified.
*** Dn,f,w value is measured in a lab according to ISO 10848-2. The total sound insulation of a construction is dependent on a lot of
factors, e.g. partition walls, celing type (e.g. material, tile dimensions and edge types), cut throughs and connections.
**** Some dimensions (a width > 700mm) will be 2/C/0N.
***** For baffles and islands, sound data are expressed as the Equivalent Absorption Area (m²) per single item, and data are dependent
on the distance between the items.

FIRE PERFORMANCE
General: Rockfon ceiling tiles have a core of stone wool. Stone wool is non-
combustible with a melting point of more than 1000°C.

Reaction to fire: Class A1 in accordance with EN 13501-1.

Fire protection: The fire resistant properties of stone wool ensure Rockfon ceiling
tiles provide fire protection in construction. The fire protection properties of Rockfon
ceilings have been tested and classified in accordance with European norm EN 13501-2
and/or national norms depending on requirements in national building codes.

HUMIDITY RESISTANCE AND DIMENSIONAL STABILITY

(FLEXURAL TENSILE STRENGTH)
Rockfon ceiling tiles are dimensionally stable even at humidity levels of up to 100% RH
and can be installed at all temperatures ranging from 0ºC to 40°C.

No acclimatisation is necessary.

Sonar is predominantly classified as Class 1/C/0N in accordance with EN 13964.

However, certain module sizes (width above 700mm) are Class 2/C/0N.

LIGHT REFLECTION
White, 85% diffuse light reflection in accordance with ISO 7724-2.

HYGIENE
Stone wool has no nutritional value and therefore it provides no sustenance to harmful
micro-organisms.

CLEAN ROOM CLASSIFICATION

Sonar is classified as Class 5 in accordance with ISO 14644-1.

CLEANING
The surface can be vacuum cleaned with a soft brush attachment.

The surface can also be cleaned once a week using a sponge or cloth and warm water
(max. 40°C) with a slightly alkaline detergent (max. pH 10) without alcohol, ammonia or
chlorine. Cleaning with a damp sponge or cloth may render the surface slightly shinier
and we therefore recommend cleaning the whole surface evenly for best results.

AFTERCARE
The tiles can be treated with Rockfon finishing paint, PVA water-based special paint
with safety code 00-1, applied in the correct amount with an airless spray
with good capacity. The surface of the tiles must be clean and dry and the existing
paint surface must be firmly adhered to the tile prior to refinishing.
Heavily discoloured tiles should be replaced.
The painting of acoustic tiles reduces the sound absorption by approximately 10%.

ENVIRONMENT
A representative selection of Rockfon products have been awarded the
Danish Indoor Climate Label and the Finnish Indoor Climate Label (M1).

Sonar is recyclable.
Sonar® Activity
Sonar Activity is designed for classrooms and open plan
offices where speech intelligibility is crucial and noise
and activity levels are very high.

ceilings have been tested and classified in accordance with European norm EN 13501-2
and/or national norms depending on requirements in national building codes.

HUMIDITY RESISTANCE AND DIMENSIONAL STABILITY

Rockfon ceiling tiles are dimensionally stable even at humidity levels of up to 100% RH
and can be installed at all temperatures ranging from 0ºC to 40°C.

No acclimatisation is necessary.

LIGHT REFLECTION
White, 85% diffuse light reflection in accordance with ISO 7724-2.

THERMAL CONDUCTIVITY
Sonar dB 40 with a thickness equal to and exceeding 30mm has been measured in
accordance with EN 12667 and has obtained the following value: λD = 40 mW/mK.

Thermal resistance: R = 0.75 m2 k/W.

HYGIENE
Stone wool has no nutritional value and therefore it provides no sustenance to harmful
micro-organisms.

CLEANING
The surface can be vacuum cleaned with a soft brush attachment.

The surface can also be cleaned once a week using a sponge or cloth and warm water
(max. 40°C) with a slightly alkaline detergent (max. pH 10) without alcohol, ammonia
or chlorine. Cleaning with a damp sponge or cloth may render the surface slightly
shinier and we therefore recommend cleaning the whole surface evenly for best
results.

LIGHT REFLECTION
White, 86% diffuse light reflection in accordance with ISO 7724-2.

HYGIENE
Stone wool has no nutritional value and therefore it provides no sustenance to harmful
micro-organisms.

In general Rockfon products have been tested for resistance to micro-organisms.

They were inoculated with food bouillon containing pathogenic germs and fungi,
and the antibacterial effect was monitored. The tests confirmed that Rockfon products
do not support the microbiological growth of the following bacteria and fungi:

- Staphylococcus aureus
- Escherichia coli
- Pseydomouas aeruginosa
- Candida albicans
- Aspergillus fumigatus

CLEAN ROOM CLASSIFICATION

MediCare Plus is classified as Class 5 in accordance with ISO 14644-1.

CLEANING
The surface can be vacuum cleaned with a soft brush attachment.

The surface can also be cleaned once a week using a sponge or cloth and warm water
(max. 40°C) with a slightly alkaline detergent (max. pH 10) without alcohol, ammonia
or chlorine. Cleaning with a damp sponge or cloth may render the surface slightly
shinier and we therefore recommend cleaning the whole surface evenly for best
results.

AFTERCARE
TThe tiles can be treated with Rockfon finishing paint, PVA water-based special paint
with safety code 00-1, applied in the correct amount with an airless spray with good
capacity. The surface of the tiles must be clean and dry and the existing paint surface
must be firmly adhered to the tile prior to refinishing.
Heavily discoloured tiles should be replaced.
The painting of acoustic tiles reduces the sound absorption by approximately 10%.

CLEAN ROOM CLASSIFICATION

Hygienic Baffles are classified as M2.5/10 in accordance with US FS 2009 E.

CLEANING
The surface can be vacuum cleaned with a soft brush attachment.

The surface can also be cleaned once a week using a sponge or cloth and warm water
(max. 40°C) with a slightly alkaline detergent (max. pH 10) without alcohol, ammonia
or chlorine.

Cleaning with a damp sponge or cloth may render the surface slightly shinier and we
therefore recommend cleaning the whole surface evenly for best results.
The surface can be foam cleaned once a week. Spray foam onto the surface at low
pressure. Let it work for 5 minutes and then sluice or wipe clean. Soap solutions should
be 1:100.

The surface can be high pressure cleaned once a week. Max pressure should be 65 bar
at 1 metre distance, and water should be spread at a 30º angle. Soap solutions should
be 1:100.

PACKAGING
Our packaging concept aims to achieve
the optimum combination of product
protection using the minimum amount
of packaging material. The cartons are
delivered stacked on pallets for maximum
protection and fixed with stretch foil or
straps. Extra protection is often used on the
corners to avoid damage during handling
and transportation.

Rockfon products are packed with great

care and protected by high class packaging
materials. All packaging materials used
for Rockfon products can be recycled or
reused. The polyethylene in shrink wrap and
stretch foils are free of chlorine and sulphur
compounds.

TRANSPORTATION
During transportation, the products should
be stacked so that they stand firmly and
cannot be exposed to blows from other
cargo.

STORAGE
Rockfon products should be stored so that
they are not exposed to the weather. The
floor surface should be dry, smooth and
firm, and they should be placed so that they
are not exposed to blows, or any other
mechanical damage. Heavy or sharp objects
should not be placed on top of the packed
products.

HANDLING
Individual cartons should be handled with
care and should not be dropped. To open a
carton, the plastic foil should be cut without
damaging the tiles. The foil and remainder
of the carton should be removed. Using two
hands, lift the tiles vertically and install. The
use of clean white gloves is recommended
during tile handling and installation.
Individual tiles should be placed in an
upright position against a solid surface.

CUTTING
The cutting of Rockfon products at walls
and service penetrations can be easily
done using a sharp knife. To maintain
the appearance of a cut edge, visible
cut edges should be treated with the
appropriate Rockfon edge paint.
