CONVEYOR BELT OPERATING PROCEDURE


4.7.1. INSPECTIONS

i. At least once per week the Shaft / Eng. Foreman will inspect the conveyor belts under his control.
He will ensure that the Team Supervisor in charge accompanies him when he does so. This man
will point out to the Shaft / Eng. Foreman any problem areas. The results and findings of this
inspection will be recorded in the Shaft / Eng. Foreman’s logbook.

ii. A checklist (as per example) will be completed by the Foreman countersigned by Engineer and filed
for reference

iii. The appointed Engineering Foreman will conduct a similar inspection and inform the Section
Engineer of any problems identified.

iv. All safety devices on the belt components will be examined and tested during the weekly inspection.

iv. The tasks performed by belt attendants will be observed by the Shaft / Eng. Foreman and
any sub – standard or dangerous practices will be rectified.

v. Items which will be inspected and reported on in writing will include the following:

a. Drive and tail pulley nip guards, mantis grating and screens, including switch gear covers, lock out
facilities etc.

b. The pull wire-stopping device along the belt. Special attention being given to ensure that the pull
wire extends past the head and tail pullies and that the warning siren is audible along the belt when
start up occurs after a stoppage.

c. The amount of spillage between idlers, on the floor and inside screened off areas.

d. The fire fighting hose is in place and adequate portable extinguishers are available.

e. That lighting is adequate for all persons to perform their duties.

f. That the necessary tools, equipment and safety notices, signs and P.P.E. are available and in good
condition.

4.7.2. WORK STATIONS AND MANNING

i. The crew will be under the control of an appointed trained Team Supervisor who will ensure:

a. No person working on belt is untrained or inexperienced. Any new worker will work under his direct
Supervision until he is satisfied that the person can perform his tasks without endangering himself in
any way and knows what procedures for conveyor belt operation are.

b. That no persons are working near the belt with loose clothing, which can foul idlers, pulleys etc.

c. Before removing any object on the belt stop the belt lock out and remove object.

d. That items tipped on the belt which could pose a danger to workers on the belt are removed safely
(i.e. scraper ropes, big rocks, steel and timber ). And not allowed to move past on the belt.

e. Travelling ways next to the belt are cleared of large rocks, timber and other rubbish removed from
belt daily.

ii. The Shaft / Eng. Foreman and Team Supervisor will establish areas of responsibility for each
Team Member on the belt.

4.7.3. CONVEYOR BELT MAINTENANCE AND CLEANING

a. No work / cleaning in fenced off areas will take place unless the belt has been locked out by
the person performing such work. Where more than one person is busy on the belt at the same time
there will be more than one lock, i.e. each person working on the belt will lock the switchgear with
his own lock prior to commencement of work. When work / task has been completed the person who
locked the switch will personally remove his lock.

b. Any fences or barriers removed to perform work on tail pulleys, at tipping points or at electrical
Switchgear will be replaced properly prior to locks being removed from switchgear.

c. Only under special circumstances and with specific written instructions from the Section Engineer
or Business Area Manager may this standard be amended.

d. Particular attention will be paid to the tracking of the belt and general condition of idlers etc. and
these will only be changed when belt is stationary and “lock out” procedures have been complied
with.

e. The Shaft / Eng. Foreman will on a weekly basis check on silos and loading points of the belts and
record his findings in his logbook.

f. Once per week spillage, chutes, cylinders, grizzlys, crushers and tracks will be checked and logged
by Shaft / Eng. Foreman.

g. Completed check lists will be retained in a file by Engineering Foreman and Shaft Foreman for a
Three-month period.

c. No persons to ride on the Conveyor Belt.

d. Only use cross over stepladder to cross conveyor belt. Ladder to be safe, secure and in good
condition.

e. No belt will be started if there is any defect recorded.

f. Only start the belt if all the Safety Devices is in place (Sirens, guards, Nip Guards, Trip Wires etc.)
