INTRODUCTION

What is Wattpad? Based on Wikipedia, Wattpad originated in 2006, as the

result of a collaboration between Allen Lau and Ivan Yuen. Their current headquarters, as of
2019, was based in Toronto, Ontario. It is an internet community for readers and writers. This is
known as a hideout or the place where we can find talented writers who use to create their own
stories, poetry, or songs either fiction or non-fiction, and etc. This app is a way for students or
youths to read books. Through this, readers were capable in gaining knowledge in reading, they
were able to recognize proper use of grammar, unfamiliar words and punctuation. They are also
capable of learning new words or foreign words. Writers can inspire students, which influence
them to write their own stories that enhances their skills on writing in a creative way that can
give them chances to join different competitions in writing, just like the annual Watty Awards.

The users of Wattpad are mostly underage making them so incredible, because
at their young ages they were able to form their own stories. Wattpad give teens or students a
great hope of being recognized and honoured for their works, that’s why they kept on being
active on Wattpad. Friendship may also occur through interaction of writers to readers, or author
to his or her co-author. Sad to say, not all Wattpad users are friendly, causing them to gain
enemy unintentionally.

According to Z. Janine (2018), reading stories in Wattpad has good effects

in terms of knowledge harvesting like for example, if you’re reading an English novel despite of
being not too good in terms of communication, written or verbal, then, you’ll get a chance to
enhance that aspect of your communication skills. Reading from time to time those kind of
novels would surely help you put up into academic aspect.
 Another thing is that, most authors would ensure you that they made their
research well which in fact is a great help for any individual, studying, working or even just
doing their daily routines in life, well, at least I got the chance to make those knowledge I
harvested to be useful enough in my daily routine. They would give facts that we never knew
were existing and that were not even written in some books and I think, it is indeed a good effect.

However, Z. Janine (2018) contradict her statements of the good effect as she
states that Wattpad has a bad effect. According to her, drowning yourself in reading too much
can greatly affect your eyesight, appetite, social life, education if still studying and your work if
you’re working. It can also affect your insights in life, may it be negatively or positively, it will.
At some point, it can also affect someone’s life in general but as long as it can be toned down,
you’re reading i mean, then all those things can be avoided.

Aside from that, M. Cagaoan (2018) thinks that the bad effect of being exposed
to Wattpad is the addiction of reading. According to her, reading is good and there are tons of
good books in Wattpad, but don’t get too hooked up on your phone. I’m not just referring to
Wattpad, I’m focusing on using the phone in general. If you read too much, your eyes might get
affected if you place the phone into your eyes.

Wattpad has both good as well as bad effect. Through different usage, Wattpad can
cause good or bad effect in students. “Will you take wattpad as a bad influence or a good
inspiration?” (Sarkar, 2018).

 DEFINITION OF TERMS

Wattpad- According to Wikipedia, it is an Internet community for readers and writers to publish
new user-generated stories in different genres, including classics, general fiction, historical fiction,
non-fiction, poetry, fan-fiction, spiritual, humour, and teen fiction. It aims to create social
communities around stories for both amateur and established writers.

Wattpad stories- It is a series of texts that you are reading in the app of Wattpad. This can be
categorized in different genres, including classic, general fiction, historical fiction, non-fiction,
poetry, fan-fiction, spiritual, humour, and teen fiction.

Reading- It is the process of looking at a series of written symbols and getting meaning from
them.

Reading Wattpad stories- It is the act of looking or reading at a series of written texts in Wattpad.

Bonding- It is the act of being with someone and tend to do something together with them.

Prefer- It is to like something in particular better than the other.

Achieve- It is to reach or get what you desire.

Blocking- It can be an obstruction or a hindrance.

Motivate- It is to encourage or inspire you.

Circumstances- It can be the hard situations you’re in, trials, or challenges.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

LOCAL LITERATURE

Wattpad is a place to discover and share stories: a social platform that connects
people through words. It is a community that spans borders, interests, languages. With Wattpad,
anyone can read or write on any device: phone, tablet, or computer. This online entertainment is
getting stronger and most of viewers are teens commonly students. As we all know things aren’t
always in a good influence to people. Everything has its own good side and bad side.

Wattpad is the world’s largest community for discovering and sharing stories.
It’s a new form of entertainment connecting readers and writers through storytelling, and best of
all, it’s entirely free. With thousands of new stories added every day, an incredibly active
community of readers and the ability to read on your computer, phone, or tablet, Wattpad is the
only place that offers a truly social and entirely mobile reading experience.

What most of the students do? Well, reading for the most part. All the stories on
Wattpad are free. Readers don’t have to pay to join the site or download the app, or to read any of
those stories, which can also be read on any computer, laptop, or tablet. There is a lot of interaction
on the site too. Comments are open at the bottom of each “part” and the most popular stories
generate a lot of feedback. This site is one of the most trending sites because many students can
easily relate their life to those fictions. This study really wants the students to know what would
be the possible reason why their academic performance is high or low. All things happen because
of our decision and this site is a choice, if a person let this things control her/him, or they control

FOREIGN LITERATURE

According to Tirocchi Simona (2018), Wattpad was co-founded in 2006 by the

two Canadian engineers and co-workers Allen Lau and Ivan Yuen as an online community of
writers and readers, “a platform for aspiring and experienced authors, allowing them to publish
their work, get feedback and connect with other writers and readers” (Bold, 2016:4).

Wattpad is thus based on user-generated contents and has also been described
as the “YouTube for stories (without video)” (Bold, 2016:4). Furthermore, it combines all the
affordances of both social networks and publishing platforms. What can teens (and users in
general) do on this platform? They can both read and write books or short stories and comment
and review the works of other people in a collaborative and participatory way. The members of
the community, known as ‘Wattpaders’, serialize their stories, uploading one or two chapters at a
time inviting comments and advice on each chapter or part of their works. The users can also
award “stars” (positive votes) to the works, follow each other’s profiles and join thematic
“clubs” (discussion forums) that focus on particular genres or other aspects of reading and
writing.
Wattpad is thus progressively reinventing the industry of cultural products,
subverting the traditional roles of author and reader and the laws of marketing, as heren the
success of a work is decreed solely by its readers. At the time of writing, registration to Wattpad
is free of charge, it has more than 60 million monthly users and more than 400 million story
uploads (Wattpad, 2018). 90% of all activity is undertaken on mobile technologies (Wattpad,
2018) because most fans, especially teens, use mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets.

According to our research data, Wattpad users tend to be girls from lower
secondary school (in the majority) and upper secondary school level. These young writers show
a great passion for literature, are generally keen readers of other works on Wattpad and show that
they want to imitate the most famous writers while adding their own originality. Teenagers
demonstrate two main uses of Wattpad. Onone hand, they search for well-known stories that are
often recommended by their friends. These stories – often written by “hybrid authors”: authors
who have been published due to their popularity on Wattpad (Bold, 2016) – represent an
important common ground for sharing generational values, lifestyles and worlds of symbols and
meanings.
On the other hand, we found a more creative use of the platform, based on
the creation of original stories, aimed at expressing emotions, joys, discomfort or inner needs. In
this perspective students act as digital media creators (Ito et al., 2008), because writing on
Wattpad is part of the process of Online Content Creation (OCC). One of the “famous” books
most cited by teens is after, the first of a series of novels written by Anna Todd, a former reader.
Her after series generated more than 5 million comments, more than 11 million likes and over
one billion online readers. The series came to the library, in a new version, unpublished and
expanded.

METHODOLOGY

Research Design

Qualitative research is a process of naturalistic inquiry that seeks in-depth

understanding of social phenomena within their natural setting. It focuses on the "why" rather than
the "what" of social phenomena and relies on the direct experiences of human beings as meaning-
making agents in their everyday lives Qualitative methods allow the researcher to study selected
issues in depth and detail without being constrained by pre-determined categories of analysis.
Respondents of the Study

The respondents of the study were the junior high students of Southville 1
Integrated National High school ages 15 to 16 years old. It consists of 10 certified Wattpad
readers or ‘Wattpaders’ from different sections of Grade 10 students who response to give
information in conducting our research.

Research Instrument

The researchers used interview questionnaire as research instrument in

conducting this study. Our interview questionnaire consists of 10 questions to determine the
effects of reading Wattpad among junior high students’ ages 15 to 16 years old. This method is
effort consumed and the researchers focus on those certified Wattpad readers or also known as
‘Wattpaders’.

Data Gathering Procedure

We use our letter of permission to sought approval from the students to

let use interview them. Our respondents from different sections were chosen by us, but we made
sure that they are certified Wattpad readers or ‘Wattpaders’.

RESULTS AND ANALYSIS OF THE STUDY

QUESTION 1: Do you prefer reading Wattpad stories than bonding with your friends? Why?
(Mas gusto mo bang magbasa na lang ng mga kuwento sa Wattpad kaysa maka-bonding ang iyong
mga kaibigan? Bakit?)

Wattpad stories at my leisure times. Ngunit hindi nangangahulugang
mas pinipinli ko ang Wattpad over friends nor friends over Wattpad.

In this question, we asked our respondents whether they rather choose Wattpad
or they would prefer bonding with their friends. Some of our respondents prefer to read Wattpad
due to some conflict they are experiencing with their friends. In this case, to save themselves from
being ignored, they tend to seek something that can bring them out of the scenario. As a result,
they rather read Wattpad stories to avoid feeling out-of-place and to make themselves entertained.

On the contrary, there are respondents who wants to bond with their friends to
make more memories and treasure their moments together rather than reading Wattpad stories to
enjoy themselves. They tend to be with their friends to keep strong relationship rather than make
the Wattpad be the conflict of their friendship.

On the other hand, there are respondents who rather choose to be in between
the choices. They tend to bond with their friends while also reading Wattpad stories. For instance,
they are using Wattpad as their bonding and not the wall to separate themselves from one another.

As we received different answers from our ten respondents saying they rather
prefer the former to save themselves from being ignored and out-of-place by their friends; prefer
the latter as they treasure friendship; and prefer both of the choices, we can conclude that Wattpad
is not the main conflict why some people tend to create walls rather than bridges; that every man
has their own mind to think for themselves.

para sa akin kaya’t kung wattpad ay nakakarelate ako at mas nagiging
masaya kasi Wattpad is timely.

For our second question, we asked the respondents to answer whether they
prefer to be with their family or rather choose reading Wattpad stories. We had received major
answers that they would rather prefer being with their family than to read Wattpad stories as they
want to treasure moments and spend their time bonding with them. They treat their families as
their priority than being the option one. So, Wattpad is not being a hindrance to create stronger
bonding relationship between the status of them and their families.

On the other hand, there are also respondents who ‘sometimes’ prefer Wattpad
than bonding with their family as they don’t want any formalities with them. Also, they rather
choose Wattpad as they aren’t in the mood to bond with them and feel happier and contended
reading Wattpad stories.

To sum it up, just like in the first question, every man has their own mind to
think for themselves. Majority of our respondents rather be with their families than to read Wattpad
as they find families more important than reading Wattpad stories. In this case, we can conclude
that decisions do always come from the person who came up with it; that Wattpad is not the
problem why people tend to distance themselves from their parents or siblings.

QUESTION 3: Do you prefer reading Wattpad stories than watching movies or dramas in
television?Why?(Mas gusto mo bang magbasa na lang ng mga kuwento sa Wattpad kaysa
manoood ng mga palabas sa telebisyon?Bakit?)

For the third question, we asked our respondents whether they prefer reading
Wattpad stories or rather choose watch movies or dramas in televisions. Almost of our respondents
answers that they prefer reading Wattpad stories than watching movies or dramas in televisions as
they are more comfortable and they understand the stories well if they are reading it. Furthermore,
they find Wattpad stories more exciting and interesting than those stories that can be seen on
televisions.

But there are also respondents who rather choose watching movies or dramas
in televisions as they are more interested in the sequence of the movies or dramas they are
watching. Yet, some of them tend to choose both, depending on their mood. If they are in the mood
to watch, they’ll choose the latter; if they are in the mood to read, they’ll go with the former.

To summarize it all, two of the choices are rather similar with each other as
they tend to show you the sequence of the stories accordingly, the only thing that differentiates the
two is the form of how they want to show it to the people. Wattpad shows the stories in form of
texts while in televisions, they show the stories in form of visuals and sounds. Yet, we can clearly
see that most of our respondents prefer reading the stories than watching it.

 For the fourth question, we asked our respondents whether they prefer
reading Wattpad stories than playing or going outside. Majority of them answered that they would
rather prefer reading Wattpad stories than playing or going outside since even without going
outside their imagination is still working. According to them, reading Wattpad is much more
convenient than playing or going outside as reading Wattpad stories doesn’t exert much effort.

QUESTION 5: Do you sleep late at night reading Wattpad stories? What are the effects of it on
your own health? (Nagpupuyat ka ba sa gabi para lang magbasa ng mga kuwento sa Wattpad?
Ano-ano ang mga naging epekto nito sa iyong sariling kalusugan?)

For this question, we asked our respondents if sleeping late just to read
Wattpad stories can affect their own health. According to all of them, they are all sleeping late at
night and the effects to them are: dizziness, mood swing, tired, poor eye sight, and etcetera.
QUESTION 6: Do you skip eating breakfast, lunch, dinner, just to read Wattpad stories? Why?

For question number six, we asked our respondents why reading Wattpad
stories can cause them to skip meals. Some of them answered they skipped eating meals because
they don’t want to stop or pause themselves from reading Wattpad stories, while some of the
remaining respondents stated that they are not skipping meals as they prioritize their health and
responsibilities more.
QUESTION 7: Do you enjoy yourself reading Wattpad stories that makes you forget about your
homeworks? What are the effects of it? (Naeengganyo ka bang magbasa ng mga kuwento sa
Wattpad na nagiging dahilan para makalimutan mong sagutan ang iyong mga takdang aralin? Ano-

In the seventh question, we asked our respondents of what are the effects of
the enjoyment in reading Wattpad stories that makes them forget about their home works. Some
of them stated that the effects of forgetting their home works because of reading Wattpad are: not
being able to answer it on time, being scolded by parents and teachers, and answering it in school
rather than at home.

For number eight, we asked our respondents whether they prefer reading
Wattpad stories than studying their lessons at home, and why. They have different opinion about
it. Some of them said that they don’t like studying so they rather read Wattpad stories, while some
of them stated that they prioritized studying more than reading Wattpad stories.

For the ninth question, we asked our respondents if how they can say that
Wattpad does help them achieve their goals rather than blocking them to move forward. According
to them, Wattpad does helping them through getting moral lessons and inspiration there. Wattpad
can also be the source of new knowledge. Wattpad can also widen their imagination as they relate
themselves onto those characters.

and other stupid things but in every stories in Wattpad there is a lesson
that you can apply in your own life. Remember that the stories in
Wattpad are inspired by real life.

 For the last question, we asked our respondents how they can say that
Wattpad can be a motivation rather than being a hindrance. All of them consider Wattpad as a
motivation and stated that Wattpad is not just about fantasies, romances and bed scenes but
rather a stories that is full of lessons and advices. Wattpad taught them to fight for their rights
and motivates them to move forward as Wattpad shows them how to. It tells them to continue
living even though life is full of surprises and downfalls.

CHAPTER IV

DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION OF THE STUDY

Discussion

This chapter includes the findings of the presentation, analysis, and

interpretation of the data.

1. The demographic profile of the respondents in terms of distribution of the following:

1.1 The demographic profile of the respondents in terms of gender.

The respondents are mostly girls as girls are more active than boys.
 1.2 The demographic profile of the respondents in terms of age.

The respondents are mostly 15 to 16 years old.

1.3 The demographic profile of the respondents in terms of years in reading Wattpad.

The respondents are already been exposed to Wattpad one to four years ago.

2. The effect of Wattpad to the life of the students in terms of the following:

2.1 The effect of Wattpad in terms of bonding with friends.

In terms of bonding with friends, Wattpad is being a huge influence to our

respondents as they find Wattpad more interesting and more entertaining than being with their
friends.

2.2 The effect of Wattpad in terms of bonding with family.

In terms of bonding with family, Wattpad is also being a massive influence to our
respondents to rather choose Wattpad than to be with their family and bond with them.

2.3 The effect of Wattpad in terms of daily routines.

In terms of daily routines, Wattpad is being an extreme influence to our

respondents to rather read Wattpad stories than doing what they usually do.
 2.4 The effect of Wattpad in terms of health.

In terms of health, Wattpad is being a huge factor to our respondents to skip

eating meals and sleep late at night just to read Wattpad stories that causes them to have a poor
eyesight, eye bags, fatigue, and low immune system.

2.5 The effect of Wattpad in terms of academic performances.

In terms of academic performances, our respondents stated that their academic

performances are low and slowly dropping. Wattpad is being a great factor for them to skip
answering their home works and studying at home.

3. Is Wattpad a help or a hindrance to the students?

Though some of them stated that Wattpad is being a hindrance, most of our
respondents said that Wattpad is being a great help for them to achieve their goals. Wattpad is
being an inspiration for them to work harder to reach what they really desire.

4. Is Wattpad a good motivation to the students?

The respondents stated that Wattpad is being a good motivation for them to move
forward despite of all the circumstances they had encountered. Wattpad is being a big influence
for them to continue living and continue fighting as Wattpad stories give them moral lessons about
life.
Conclusion

We noticed that Wattpad has both good and bad effects to the students. Though
we can clearly state that Wattpad help students for some things, there are few contradicted
statements from our respondents which says that Wattpad is being a destruction for them; that it
builds rather walls than bridges. Similarly, they stated that Wattpad can help them a little bit for
some purposes. To illustrate, Wattpad can help them improve their grammars, writing skills and
proper punctuations, it also help them to be kept entertained and suppress boredom, and even
help them to meet new friends through this app, however, this app is being a huge factor for
them to drop their academic performances and diminished their social communication.

Therefore we conclude, that Wattpad can contribute knowledge as well as

entertainment, but too much use of it can cause several bad effects. Wattpad is also said to be
addicting and we all knew that addiction is never been good for anyone. It’s very popular
nowadays, the saying “Wattpad is like a drug”. It means that just like drug, Wattpad can be very
addictive that can make our mind a ‘blank spot’ and little do we know, we are already building
walls with anyone around us instead of making bridges to communicate with them. That’s why
self-discipline is a must, also time management to help us know our limit; to let us know when to
read and when to bond with the people surrounds us.
