Experiment No. 1
Properties of Matter

I. Objectives
1. To be able to observe and examine each sample, and record the different properties
that you will observe in each sample on the table below.
2. To know the hardness, heaviness, flammability, solubility and magnetic properties
of each object.

II. Materials
Iron filings, Wood, Paper, Soft drink, Cotton, Piece of cloth, Iron nails, Flour, Salt,
Rock

III. Results and Data

IV. Discussion (examine the data collected and explain the results of the experiment)
The different materials gathered are iron filings, wood, paper, soft drink, cotton, piece
of cloth, iron nails, flour, salt and rock. Each of them has different shapes, color and
odor. The hard materials are wood, iron nails, and rock, while the soft materials are
iron filings, paper, soft drink, cotton, piece of cloth, flour, and salt. The heavy materials
are wood, iron nails, and rock, while the light materials are iron filings, paper, soft
drink, cotton, piece of cloth, flour, and salt. The flammable materials are wood, paper,
cotton, piece of cloth, and flour while iron filings, soft drink, iron nails, salt and rock
are non-flammable. The soluble materials are soft drink, flour, and salt, while iron
filings, wood, paper, cotton, piece of cloth, iron nails, and rock are insoluble.

V. Answers to questions
1. What makes the object different from each other?
- The objects are different from each other because each object has different
characteristics of matter, such as its state and its properties.
2. Which object/s exhibited chemical properties? Physical properties?
- Wood, paper, cotton, flour, and piece of cloth exhibit chemical properties, while
iron filings, soft drink, iron nails, salt, and rock exhibit physical properties.
3. Which material/s is/are prone to rusting? Why or why not?
- Iron fillings and iron nails are prone to rusting, because these materials are
metals.
4. What do you think is more helpful when identifying an object’s identity, physical
properties or chemical properties? Why?
- Flammability, as it is only present in chemical properties. When there’s no
flammability, the object’s identity is physical property.
VI. Conclusion
Each object can be classified into chemical property or physical property. These objects
can be classified according to different properties that helps us identify if it is a physical
property or chemical property. These different properties such as flammability, hardness, and
solubility differ to each material, which creates a variety of different objects that have different
properties.
