Assessment Notification
DEPTH STUDY 1 - TASK 1 – Term 1 2019

Task No. 1 Date 29/03/19 Unit/Task Investigation Report

Marks 50 Weighting 30% Teacher Mr Johnson

Task
Design and carryout an investigation on the Physics of Skydiving. Analyse the data
and discuss the effect of the body position to reach terminal velocity.

Dates
 Predicting and Planning the investigation Monday 18th March (Week 7 )
 Excursion and Data acquisition Tuesday 19th March (Week 7 )
 Data Analysis and reporting Friday 20th – Tue 26th (week 8)
 Report submission Deadline: Friday 29th March 10pm

The following outcomes will be assessed in this task

PH11/12-1 Questioning and predicting
PH11/12-2 Planning investigations
PH11/12-5 Analysing data and information
PH11/12-7 Communicating
PH11-8 describes and analyses motion in terms of scalar and vector quantities in two
dimensions and makes quantitative measurements and calculations for distance,
displacement, speed velocity and acceleration
OR
PH11-9 describes and explains events in terms of Newton’s laws, the law of conservation
of momentum and the law of conservation of energy

Details and Procedure

Students are required to conduct a series of experiments to investigate the physics of
skydiving. Students will individually plan, conduct and report on 3 physical properties for
free falling. The final scientific report submission is the assessable component of this depth
study.

Students will participate in Week 7 in an excursion where they will be able to experience
and investigate the effects of body position to reach terminal velocity. Students will be
allocated 5 hours of lesson time to work on their depth study after the excursion. It will be
up to individual students to plan the data that they need, as well as decide on methods that
will be used to acquire that data. Students will analyse and report on their findings.
Report Requirements:

In your report, you must include the following,

Aim: The general purpose for the overall investigation

- Write the purpose of your investigation

Variables - Identify and explain all:

- Independent variables
- Dependent variable
- Control variables

Hypothesis:
- Identify your hypothesis and give reasons for it

Equipment:
- List the equipment required for the investigation

Method:
- Produce a detailed procedure that you plan on following

Risk Assessment:
- Provide a thorough risk assessment that identifies all realistic risks, assessed level of
risk and provides interventions that counteract potential risks.

Results:
- Tabulate all results where appropriate
- Graph all results where appropriate

Discussion:
- Describe the significance of your findings
- Assess the quality of the investigation
- List any improvements that you would make to your investigation
- Relate the experience to the physics behind the free fall
- Assess the validity of the experiment
- Assess the reliability of the experiment

Conclusion:
- Conclude whether or not your hypotheses were correct
- Give researched reasons why you think this is the case

Submission:
- A soft copy of the assignment is to be submitted on Canvas by 10pm on Friday 29th
March
