for the storage of Ductile Iron Pipes and accessories. The materials shall be
stored on a clean, hard, dry surface and covered with tarpaulin sheet to block
sunlight and to provide protection from weather.

7.2 PREPARATORY WORKS

Prior to start of placing the filter media, the followings must be checked:
- Approval of Method Statement.
- All the required engineering drawings and documents are approved and received in
time.
- All tools, equipment and temporary items are ready in sufficient quantities.
- Inspect the precast filter underdrains as well as other civil structure for any damages
and if found, the same shall be rectified before placing the filter media.
- Any related and unfinished civil works shall be checked for completion.
- Consumables shall be arranged in sufficient quantities.
- Procedure for handling and storage of consumables shall be approved and available
at site.

7.3 PLACING GRAVEL AND SAND LAYERS

7.3.1 Prior to the placement of gravel into the filter tanks, each tank shall be cleaned
thoroughly. High pressure water jetting shall be used for cleaning purpose. Filter
tanks must be inspected for any oil, grease etc and the same shall be cleaned
with utmost care.
7.3.2 After cleaning and drying the filter, put two marks on wall of the filter tanks: one
for the gravel top level and the other for sand.
7.3.3 Put gravel on the underdrain system. The thickness of the gravel layer should be
750mm. Using suitable tools, a uniform thickness of 750mm should be
maintained for all of the 10 nos. tanks. Any undulation of the gravel layer must be
rectified.
7.3.4 During placement of gravel, care must be taken to avoid unwanted damages to
the underdrain system.
7.3.5 After placement of gravel layer and before any filter sand is placed, the filter
should be washed for 5 min at the maximum rate of of 22.5gpm/ft2.
7.3.6 Nobody shall be allowed to stand or walk directly on the filter media. Suitable and
cleaned plywood or boards shall be used in that case.

7.3.7 Before starting the placing of sand layer, the gravel layer must be finished and
inspected by the Engineer.
7.3.8 Care shall be exercised in placing sand layer to avoid disturbing the integrity of
the gravel layer.
7.3.9 The bags of sand shall be placed in the filter and the materials distributed directly
from them. DO NOT DISTURB ANY LAYER ALREADY PLACED. Sand shall be
spread using hand shovel.
7.3.10 Initially 1100mm of sand layer shall be placed and the remaining 100mm shall be
placed to reach finish level after the initial backwash.
7.3.11 The elevation of the top surface of each layer shall be checked by filling the filter
with water to the level line previously marked on the filter tank wall. Any
excessive filter media beyond the top level shall be removed by scrapping.
7.3.12 Any filter media that becomes contaminated after placement shall be removed
and replaced with clean material of the proper type and size.

7.4 PREPARING FILTER FOR SERVICE

7.4.1 After all filter materials have been placed, initial backwashing shall be started.
7.4.2 Clear well shall be filled with the potable water and backwash line shall be used
for this purpose. The wash water shall be admittedly slowly upward through the
underdrain system until the entire sand bed is flooded. The wash rate shall be
increased gradually during the initial wash to remove air from the bed.
7.4.3 During each backwash, the water shall be applied at an initial rate of not more
than 2gpm/ft2 of filter area. The backwash rate shall then be increased gradually
over a period of 3min to the maximum rate of 22.5gpm/ft2.
7.4.4 After the initial wash, the filter shall be partially drained and a layer of fine
materials approximately 5mm thick shall be removed from the surface of the filter
by scraping.
7.4.5 The scraping operation shall be repeated as many times as necessary to remove
all fine material. The filter shall be washed at least three times between
scrapings. Each wash shall last at least 5 min and shall be at the rate of

specified finished elevation, sufficient material shall be added before the final
scraping operation. Adequate material shall be added to anticipate the final
operation.
7.4.7 After all work related to placement of the filter media has been finished, and
before the filter is placed in service, the entire filter shall be disinfected by
chlorination.
