Erik Erikson's psycho-social theory outlines 8 stages of psychosocial development from infancy to late adulthood. Each stage is characterized by a psychosocial crisis between two opposing virtues or tendencies. The first stage between trust vs mistrust occurs in infancy where children develop a sense of trust in themselves and others. The second stage between autonomy vs shame and doubt occurs in early childhood where children develop a sense of independence and self-control. The third stage between initiative vs guilt occurs in preschool age where children learn to balance independence with responsibility.
