Professor John Cinnamon

314N.DickAve.
Hamilton, OH 45056

Dear Professor Cinnamon:

As you are aware, the Miami University Police Department provided me with a report indicating that you
have admitted to illegally importing Iboga seeds from Gabon Africa in 2004 and gave the seeds to
Professor Daniel GIadish to grow an Iboga tree and that you knew that such tree was being grown in the
Miami University Hamilton Campus Conservatory. A copy of the Miami University Police Report is
enclosed. These actions are in violation of law (possession of Schedule I Narcotic, 21 C.F.R. Section
1308.11) and University policy, including but not limited to the Drug Free Workplace Policy and the
Reporting and Addressing Illegal Activity and Misconduct policy.

It is my judgment that this information constitutes grounds for termination of your tenured appointment as
a faculty member. Disciplinary actions, once initiated, become matters of public record and are placed in
a faculty member's public personnel file.

I will initiate the formal disciplinary process by providing you with a Notice of Proposed Discipline. A
draft of the Notice is attached to this letter. If you would like to meet in the hope that we might be able to
reach some agreement as to the appropriate disciplinary action to be taken without resorting to formal
proceedings, I am available either on April 2, 3, or 4th. You may call Ms. Stacy Kawamura in my office at
529-6721, and schedule a meeting by 5:00 pin, Friday, March 22, 2019. If you would like to bring an
advisor with you, please feel free to do so. Similarly, if you would prefer to bring legal counsel with you,
please notify Ms. Kawamura so that I may arrange to have university counsel present.

I am hopeful that we can have a collegfal and productive meeting. If you do not schedule an appointment
to meet with me, I will issue the Notice of Proposed Discipline on April 5, 2019.

Sincerely,

Phyllis Callahan
Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs
