Task Analysis: Duolingo Classroom

I chose a procedural analysis because it is an easy way for viewers to see the actions he or she
will take. Many of the members of my department are not savvy with technology, so a
procedural analysis will be easier for them to follow and complete.

Task Outline:
1.0 Create an Account
1.1 Navigate to www.schools.duolingo.com
1.2 Click ‘Get Started’ button on the left
1.3 Enter full name, email, and password in the boxes provided
1.4 Click ‘Create Duolingo Account’
2.0 Create a Class
2.1 Click ‘Create a Classroom’ in the top right-hand corner
2.2 Type the name of the classroom in the box provided
2.3 Click on the arrow and select the language your students are learning
2.4 Click on the arrow and select the language your students currently speak
2.5 Click ‘Continue’
2.6 Click ‘Share Classroom Link’ (This will allow you to post your link online and have
students navigate to it later)
2.7 Click ‘Continue’
2.8 Click ‘Continue’
2.9 Click ‘Download PDF’ and click ‘Continue’
Note: I would suggest Saving the PDF to a location that you can get to later, such as on your
desktop.
Students will have to enroll in your class. To do this, copy the Classroom Link and paste it into
your blog, or write it on the board and have students navigate to the link. Once students are
enrolled in your class, continue by completing the tasks below.
3.0 Assign assignments
3.1 Click ‘Assignments’ on the left-hand side of the screen
3.2 Click ‘Create Assignment’
3.3 Choose the type of assignment to create. You may either have students gain a certain
amount of experience points (XP), or select specific skills you want them to learn
(i.e. specific vocabulary or grammar).
3.4 Select the amount of XP or the specific grammar/vocabulary assignments you want
from the drop-down menu.
3.5 Click ‘Start On’ and select a date and time
3.6 Click ‘Due On’ and select a date and time
3.7 Click ‘Schedule Assignment’
4.0 View Student Completion of Assignments
On the due date of an assignment, you can easily see which students have completed the
assignment and which students have not. Follow the instructions below.
4.1 Click ‘Assignments’ on the left-hand side of the screen
4.2 Click on the specific assignment you want to grade
4.3 Student names will appear in alphabetical order. Next to each name, a status will
appear. If it says ‘Missed’, the student did not meet the target. If it says ‘Late’,
the student completed the task, but not by the due date. If it says ‘Completed’,
the student completed the task on time.

7 Show me clicking After you create an account, you will want to create a
class. Click ‘Create a Classroom’ in the top right-hand
corner.
8 Show me typing in Type the name of the classroom in the box provided. This
classroom information. should be a name unique to a section of a class. For
example, I teach two sections of Spanish 1, so I have two
separate classes on Duolingo Classroom. I will name this
class Spanish 1 1st.

9 Show me selecting Click on the arrow and select the language your students
information from a are learning. I teach Spanish, so I’m going to select
drop-down menu. ‘Spanish’. Then, click on the arrow and select the
language your students currently speak. I will select
‘English’ here. Click ‘Continue’.

link will allow you to post your link online and have students
navigate to it later. I personally post my link on Edmodo
because it is my class blog and all students have access to
it. By sharing the link, students can easily enroll in your
class.

Duolingo PDF to my click ‘Download PDF’ and click ‘Continue’. I would
Duolingo folder on the suggest saving this PDF somewhere where you will be
desktop able to find it later. I have a desktop folder for Duolingo
where I save mine.
12 Show me clicking After you have a class set up, you will want to begin
‘Assignments’ assigning assignments. To begin, click ‘Assignments’ on
the left-hand side. Then, click ‘Create Assignment’.
13 Show two assignment Choose the type of assignment you want to create. You
icons: XP and specific may either have students gain a certain amount of
lesson experience points (XP), or select specific skills you want
them to learn (i.e. specific vocabulary or grammar). I
personally like the XP option with lower-level classes,
such as Spanish 1, because it allows students to work on
lessons in order from beginner level all the way to
advanced level. You can also choose to assign a specific
lesson if it corresponds to a grammar or vocabulary lesson
you are teaching in the classroom.
14 Show me inputting Select the amount of XP or the specific
information for a fake grammar/vocabulary assignments you want from the
assignment drop-down menu. I generally assign 100 XP that is due
two weeks after the date that I assign it. This is
completely up to you, so assign whatever you would like!
Next, click ‘Start on’ and select a date and a time that you
want the assignment to start. The website will
automatically push out the assignment to the students at
the time and date you select. Then, click ‘Due On’ and
select a date and time for the assignment to be due. This
due date will show up on the assignment for the students.
Finally, click ‘Schedule Assignment’.

15 Click on Assignments After you have assigned an assignment, you will want to
know how to see which students have completed the
assignment and which have not. Duolingo Classroom has
an easy way for you to do this so that it is easy to input
the grades in a gradebook. Click on ‘Assignments’ on the
left-hand side.
16 Show three different Select the assignment that you want to grade. I will select
markings for the assignment on the top so you can see what the
assignments markings will look like. Student names will appear in
(completed, missed, or alphabetical order. Next to each name, a status will

completed the task on time.
