Humans are the most advanced and intelligent species in the universe, their greatest work is

Science.
The word science comes through the Old French, and is derived from the Latin word scientia for
knowledge.

Science is reasoned-based analysis of sensation upon our awareness. As such, the scientific
method cannot deduce anything about the realm of reality that is beyond what is observable by
existing or theoretical means. When a manifestation of our reality previously considered
supernatural is understood in the terms of causes and consequences, it acquires a scientific
explanation.

Science is the branch of knowledge dealing with people and the understanding we have of our
environment and how it works.

Humans incessantly explore experiment, create, and examine the world. This urge to know
more and explore the unexplored has given birth to the field called science. The active process
by which physical, biological, and chemical occurrences are studied is known as science .The
origin of science has been lost in the mists of time.

Science- this single word itself has a lot to say. Science has truly been the burning topic of the
century. Today, you just need to think about any sector and the word science will surely come
up. Science technology has made an immense impact on nearly every sphere of daily life.
Science plays a major role in today’s society.

Science has made life easier for man. Thanks to science we can travel from one corner of the
world to another within seconds. Transportation has become a million times easier due to
science and technology.

Many of our problems have been solved because of Science. Inventions like Telephone,
Internet, Mobile help in communicating over long ranges, Through telecommunication and
technology science has brought the world closer. Today a man in India can communicate
through the internet to a person in another nook of the world. Science has truly made us say
that this is a small, small world. Infact; the world has become so small for us that we have
started exploring the space and are even thinking of settlements on Mars.

Science has done a great service to mankind by giving birth to medical technology .Medical
Science has developed a lot, Thousands of lives are saved every day due to the progress of
medical science. ...
Today, Once incurable diseases like small-pox have completely been eradicated and dreaded
maladies like Cancer are no longer without a remedy.
These days there is a cure or atleast a prevention for almost every diseases. In short   we totally
depend upon these things..

Can anyone imagine life in the twenty first century without science. The great discoveries or
inventions of science have been epoch making and many of these have led to technological
marvels. The development and making of the Steam Engine brought about the Industrial
Revolution. That was the beginning of mankind having more than what Nature gave us. May be
the invention of the wheel can be credited with the first technological breakthrough. It did add
a lot to the speed and comfort of man.

In science the making of the electronic tools brought about a whole new world of
entertainment, communication, information and much more. The scientific discovery of
radioactivity and nuclear energy gave us new tools and means to greater comfort and other
benefits. It is a different matter that scientific advancement is also sometimes put to destructive
ends. But that does not, by any means, detract from the boons that science bestows on us
through technology.

Understanding Matter

Life, the human body and for that matter other living beings, are naturally so grand and
mysterious that we have not fully understood the physiology and the functioning of the human
body despite having decoded DNA and making very great progress in biological sciences even to
create life in the laboratory. We can clone species and learn a great deal about their system.
We have started learning to treat deadly diseases like cancer. More importantly, learning about
the nature and the structure of matter, learning which is embodied in the Periodic Table, led to
great advances.

The knowledge of isotopes, the discovery of radioactivity, the discovery of fission, have all led
to technological advances and added to our comforts. Space science may not, on the face of it,
look as if it has given us much. But besides the direct benefits in understanding the Universe,
there have been several spin offs which have led to new very useful materials and techniques.
Nuclear and Space Science and technology have given us many new implements, gadgets,
special new materials and technical marvels like robots. The scientific discovery is such a
fascinating field of study that one can go on and on. The discovery of X-rays, Nuclear Magnetic
Resonance, Medical Scanners have revolutionized medical diagnosis. The discovery of Fission
added a new source of energy to the rapidly depleting fossil fuels. In this review I want to touch
upon two relatively recent contributions of science which have been technologically exploited
to our benefit. These are the discovery of Radioactivity and Fission, both somewhat related.

Radioactivity

Radioactivity is the spontaneous emission of certain radiations by some elements of matter.

The radiations emitted are: gamma rays, beta rays, alpha rays. Gamma rays are very
penetrating and radioisotopes emitting these radiations are used for industrial radiography, and
also for treatment of cancer. An isotope of Iridium or of cobalt or cesium is used in industrial
radiography. The same radioisotopes are also used in medicine. Iridium wires or cesium
capsules are implanted in cavities to treat cancer. Similarly cobalt installed in machines is
employed for treatment of deep seated cancers like lung, breast and so on. Very very briefly,
the cancer cells are more sensitive to the gamma radiations than the normal cells and are more
easily killed. Normal cells are also killed but much less and can recover. Lot of detailed
understanding and technique is involved in the treatment. Naturally occurring radioactive
isotopes are not suitable. The above mentioned ones and several others are produced
artificially in reactors and accelerators. Radioisotopes are also put in many gadgets which find
numerous applications.

Nuclear Energy

The discovery of fission led to the creation of nuclear reactors and generation of energy. Fission
is a process in which a relatively less abundant isotope of the heavy metal uranium, when
bombarded with the neutral particle neutron is broken into three smaller elements and in the
process energy is released following Einstein’s equation of mass energy equivalence. The
amount of energy released is huge and is used to convert water into steam and run turbines to
produce electricity as in a conventional coal fired thermal power plant. Nuclear reactors have
been built which produce enough energy to be able to generate upwards of 1000 MW of
electricity in a single power plants reactor. Many countries of the world are having Nuclear
Power Plants. France produces the most amount of electricity through nuclear means for its
consumption. Russia and the United States also have several Plants to produce significant
amounts of Nuclear Power.
Inventions such as washing machine, refrigerator, air-conditioner, dishwasher and geyser make
our lives easy. Television, cinema and compact discs have changed the entertainment industry.
Thousands of lives are saved every day due to the progress of medical science. It is impossible
to run a company or a factory without a computer. We can also say that computers are the
greatest invention of modern age.
It is only due to science that we stand where we are today. Science has given us lot-computers,
technology, electronics, gadgets and the list goes on and on. Science has beyond doubt been a
boon for us.

Through the advent of hybrids farmers have received a boon. Today farming is a lot easier than
it was a decade ago. After the green revolution farming has become a lot easier and the yield
has increased tenfold.

Science is important in today's life. We cannot live without science in the modern world.
Science can be called one of the greatest blessings of this age. We owe all our progress to it.

However, science has also brought a lot of misery upon man. ...
It is not impossible to remove at least some of the curses of science. ..

There is an evil side of Science , like the inventions of atomic bomb by Alfred Nobel, Gun by
Samuel Colt, many chemicals & chemical weapons, these hazardous inventions have caused a
lot of trouble to mankind & nature. The Chernobyl disaster, reactor accident at the Chernobyl
nuclear power plant on 26th April 1986, reactor located in Soviet Union more than 330,00
people died also the radiations still have an effect on genes of people who survived. Many
other disasters like the Hiroshima & Nagasaki Bomb explosion.

More refined technologies brought huge improvements in the quality of life, but also in
weapons of mass destruction. Explosives and vacuum cleaners, artillery and the microwave
oven. Accurate and sophisticated theories about the nature of the universe were thought up,
and then World War 2 started.
Thus began the Nuclear Age - you could also call it the Age of Fear. Nuclear weapons,
electronics, computers. From then on, scientific research progressed at an exponential rate.
Moreover, computing power increased with great strides, quality of life soared. Automobiles,
televisions, hi-fis, telephones all improved our lives. Long range bombers, intercontinental
ballistic missiles, neutron bombs and cruise missiles were all designed to destroy others.
Gone are the days when peace and tranquility used to prevail throughout the world. Today a
gun booms in one corner of the world or another everyday. Wars are fought between countries
for years and years together at a stretch. Families are torn apart and friends are lost forever,
never to be reunited .By giving birth to weaponry, warcraft and armaments it can be
indisputably said that science is the root of battles, armed conflicts and international disputes.
Thanks to science we are plunging headlong into an era of nuclear wars.
Due to the advent of science the longevity of life has greatly increased. But, this is paving the
way for over-population and population explosion. This has resulted in mass deficiency of land.
Today, due to this we are even auctioning of land on the moon!

Thus, I have illustrated some of science’s advantages and disadvantages. But can we really
blame science when it comes to the disadvantages? I believe that the culpability lies with those
who misuse science. The radar of blameworthiness, in my opinion, should never fall on science.
Hence I can state indubitably that science is a great boon for humankind, but when it is misused
it can prove to be the most worst of banes.

Yet the problem is whether science is a boon or bane to society. Science is truth, truth is beauty
and beauty is god. Science nurtures intelligence but leaves the will and emotions uncared for. It
is said that knowledge comes but wisdom lingers.

Is science really a bane? It is said that science is a good servant but a bad master. As religion is a
matter of faith, science is a matter of fact. Modern warfare is destructive beyond the wildest
dreams of our unscientific predecessors. Machine guns, shells, submarines, the atom and
hydrogen bombs can destroy the world in the twinkling of an eye. Aeroplanes in war act as
engines of mass destruction. Not only in times of war but in times of peace also man lives in the
midst of disease. Though cures are being invented diseases are multiplying too. If the former is
in arithmetic progression, the latter is in geometric progression. That is why peace lovers blame
science as a curse.

sometimes ignorance is bliss. some liken science to the "tree of good and evil". some say it is
trying to understand the mind of god, (some say that is bad and others good). without it where
would we be? undoubtedly a smaller population still in huts and caves. science was that which
helped us to understand life and make our lot a better one while in the huts and caves, and
gave us our civilization by freeing us and giving us time to build it. it is obviously a boon and a
curse and each and everyone of us will give each a proper value to it accordingly.

The emerging science has both advantage and disadvantage.

u will come to know what is around u. its development should move in the positive direction.
for example if u take nuclear energy it helps us in generating electricity and the same is used for
weapons which destructs the peace. When the nuclear bombs are tested it makes a loud
explosion and creates noise pollution and it also destroys the fertility of the nearby lands.
However, misuse of any good thing has been common in history, that doesnt make a blessing a
curse
It is not impossible to remove at least some of the curses of science. We must resolve to use it
only to make life better for man. We must also not pollute our planet or cut trees any more. We
must not build any more arms until every man has food on his plate. In this way, we can build a
better world.
Science is like a knife. A knife can be used to cut vegetables. The same knife can also be used as
a lethal weapon .In the same way science can be used as a tool for the development but like
every coin has another side, science, when it is in wrong hands can be abused.

When man first learned to make fire - technology started. Obviously there is a science behind
making fire. Though he did not know it during the then period, but now he is quite aware of it.
Not only that, he is now developing newer and newer ways and uses in the matter. Had there
been no fire development, we would not have reached to such an age.

Fire can burn everything. Should we say that fire is a curse?

The "boons" and "curses" of science are only results of how man uses them. For example, you
can use a brick to build a house (boon) you can use it to break someone's head (curse).

Effect of science is neither bad nor good. It is effect only and it is our view point that describes it
as bad or good.

The question whether Science and Technology is a boon or curse depends upon the person(s)
who utilizes the inventions in these fields. A wise person utilises it for the benefit of humanity
and a bad person utilises it for the destruction of humanity.
Throughout history, science and technology have proved to be a see-saw of sorts, with the ups
and downs, benefits and disadvantages, increasing with time. Today, our quality of life in first-
world countries is comparatively excellent - life expectancy is high, general affluence is high,
entertainment is readily available. But also we live with the terrible, ever present knowledge
that one skirmish, one conflict, one mistake, could destroy the delicate balance of the see-saw
and our weapon
