2.

2 THE METHOD OF PLANNING AND SCHEDULLING USING 4D

Revit (Revit Architecture, Revit Structure and Revit MEP) and Navisworks
(Navisworks Manage, Navisworks Simulate and Navisworks Freedom) are both
highly overriding software products which are developed by Autodesk for
intensifying and strengthening the productivity of AEC professionals. The former is
utilized for creating detailed and faultless design in 3D for architecture, structure and
MEP whereas the latter one is used for reviewing the design and indentifying faults in
it.

2.2.1 REVIT

Revit was created with the architects in mind and uses BIM (Building Information
Modelling) techniques to deliver sustainable and reliable designs as well as data. Revit
provides data management techniques as well, which is one huge benefit for architects
and builders over AutoCAD. BIM allows data modelling based on the building design
to empower the design, construction and maintenance phase with a backup of enough
data to aid the demolition phase if ever need be. That’s how far-fetched is Revit’s focus
on architectural design and development, whereas AutoCAD’s won’t offer any of these
features.
2.2.1.1 Benefits of REVIT

Autodesk Revit which is also called as Building Information Modeling software

is meant to assist multidiscipline design teams when it comes to providing high-end
solutions for architectural and engineering problems. Be it the designers, contractors,
architects and engineers they all count a lot on different flavors of Revit in terms of
immaculate creation of building design and its circulation across disciplines.
Architectural, structural and MEP components can be effectually developed in 3D in
Revit. For accessing complete building information design and construction
professionals can utilize the database of the model which successfully incorporates all
valuable design and construction information. When it comes to availing information
for planning and tracking different stages of construction design and construction
professionals can make use of 4D, 5D and 6D models.

For enhancing the productivity it is crucial that AEC professionals have accurate
schedules, precise information on materials, and quantity takeoffs etc. Apart from that
information on time and cost of the project is also excessively indispensable for
streamlining the project. And such inclusive information can be effectively acquired
with the assistance of 4th, 5th and 6th dimensions of the Building Information Models.
Highly imperative and informative simulations can be generated by architects and
engineers when they have the availability of 4D BIM models which effectually
incorporate time related information in them. When it comes to exhibiting and
showcasing the construction process from its initial stages till it is ultimately
completed, 4D simulations are immensely cardinal for design and construction
professionals.

Revit was conceived to specifically cater to the industry of architecture. Revit

MEP users have access to a significant variety of specialized design and development
tools that AutoCAD will simply never offer. It utilizes BIM technologies to achieve
3D designs instantly fortified with true-to-life scale, proportion, and visualization
capabilities as well as extensive data for designers to investigate.

The power of data modelling enriches architectural design in CAD as well as

facilitates the construction and maintenance phase. It even goes so far as to inform the
demolition phase should the project demand it.
Naturally, it supports a modeling workflow as opposed to a drafting workflow; a
single model is used to derive supplementary items such as drawings and schedules.
One of the most important advantages of Revit is that any changes made to the model
update the entire 3D image, automatically reconfiguring established relationships,
dependent elements and data points.

2.2.1.2 Step to Develop a 3D Structural or Architectural Model in Revit

AutoDesk

Step 1: Open Revit file and select one template for example architectural template,
structural template or mechanical template before starting.
Step 2: Click insert → choose Link CAD or import CAD → choose AutoCAD
drawing to link or import into Revit templates. So the easy to construct an existing
plan into 3D.

Step 3: After click link CAD or import CAD, select CAD file → select file of type
(DWG Files (*.dwg)) → select colors → import units → positioning (selet origin to
origin) → place at → open
Step 4: After import or link CAD, check floor plan at project browser. Click level by
level to pin or unpin the drawing to moved the plan or not moving.
Step 5: On the project browser, click floor plans by level and on the option toolbars,
click fully explode the drawing plan so that we can select line to delete or click delete
layer. Also can hide line or visibility line click.

Step 6: After explode, select irrelevant line, on option toolbars select delete layers or
click view to visibility line.

Step 7: After that, click to structure and select level to start putting structural
component for example column, beam, slab and etc. After that, continued with other
structure componet to complete the structural drawing.

2.2.2 NAVISWORK

Navisworks is not a 3D modeling program but a program that converts large

REVIT 3D model files into smaller 3D models that are far more manageable for a
multitude of team members. It gives BRS a more efficient tool to review and resolve
differences between multiple consultant models. Navisworks is a powerful desktop
application that can filter and separate specific model information. It will not be a
program to replace REVIT, but a tool that works in conjunction with REVIT and
makes certain processes much more efficient. Navisworks can be used in a multitude
of application

2.2.2.1 Improves 3D presentation techniques with clients and consultants:

a) Smaller file size can be opened and operated on a laptop or tablet computer
with ease.

b) Entire 3D model can be viewed and walked through—and sections of

building isolated—to be analyzed at much greater speeds than in REVIT.

c) Material changes can be made instantaneously and views can be set up

quickly to show different material possibilities
2.2.2.2 Improves 3D model interaction with clients

a) Provides clients with small files containing overall project 3D information

without overwhelming them with entire REVIT project database.

b) Clients can download free Navisworks file viewer, allowing them to rotate,
spin, flip and walk through the model.

c) Clients can take basic measurements and interact with design team in 3D
environment.

d) Client can generate 3D views of the project, improving their overall

understanding of the design.

2.2.2.3 Improves collision detection

a) Navisworks’ greatest strength is clash detection: Detecting collisions during

design, in real time, gives the team a very efficient method to improve
coordination among multiple building systems and ultimately avoid costly
remedies after drawing completion and during construction.

b) Enhances ability to filter through building elements quickly and run collision
tests between isolated building elements.

c) The same filters and searches can be saved and used throughout the project.
2.2.3 Steps to Develop a 4D Model in Navisworks with Timeliner

Step 1: Develop a 3D model using a modeling software that is compatible with

Navisworks.(most applications can be used, but the structure of the file will differ
based on the appication used). One of the best applications to use is Autodesk VIZ
since it all for the hierarchical grouping of the elements so that they are easier to link.
You can also use Revit and export the file to a Navisworks file (see the Revit to
Navisworks page).
Step 2: Develop a CPM schedule for the project in a compatible application. MS
Project 2003 will work well for the development of the schedule. Also can use
Primavera Project Manager, but the linking of the database is a bit more challenging

Step 3: Open Navisworks and then open CAD or Navisworks file within Navisworks.
Click append to select drawing from revit or any software compatible with naviswork.
Step 4: Open the Navisworks Timeliner module by going to the 'Tools - Timeliner'
menu item.

Step 5: Go to the 'Links' tab and then all a link to the schedule schedule file by right
clicking on the links area. then need to right click again and select ‘Rebuild task
hierarchy from link’ so that the activities in the scheduler are imported.
Step 6: Link the 3D objects to the activities by selecting the objects in the ‘Selection
Tree’ window and then right clicking on the activity which would like the object to be
linked to and select ‘Attached selected’. This will link the schedule activity to the 3D
objects.

Step 7: Add an activity type to each of the activities, e.g., construct, demolition, or
temporary, or can create own activity types.
Step 8: After linking all the object, can review the simulation in the ‘Simulate’ tab of
Timeliner, and revise the playback settings in the ‘Configure’ tab of Timeliner.

Step 9: Then export the 4D model as an .avi file which can be easily transmitted to
others. To do this, go to ‘File – Export – Animation’ and select within the source
pulldown the ‘Timeliner Simulation’. Note that the size of the window and the FPS
(Frames per second) will have a significant impact on the size of the .avi file. Usually
set the FPS to 1 without significantly impacting the video quality. Also can select the
output ‘Options’ button to compress the video upon export.
