“The Effectiveness and Efficiency of Bio-Grinder

in Making Organic Fertilizer ”

By:

Kezia Mae R. Perez

INTRODUCTION

Filipinos have been facing different waste management problems caused by lack

of discipline, but sometimes, they just don’t have enough time to segregate waste. Last

November 2015, “plastic man” Professor Vasudevan, developed the machine used for the

project “plastic to pavers” but did not give attention on biodegradable wastes . The

researcher thought of making a device that will make biodegradable wastes into a more

effective fertilizer and lessening the time to decay inorder to be used at once. The researcher

focused on the making of a machine that could help in the faster decomposition of the

diodegradable wastes that could be a natural fertilizer for organic vegetables.

The researcher intend to make such machine because of the intention to help

consumers make used of the vegetable wastes at home or even in the market places where

the wasted vegetables were just thrown in the garbage truck. The researcher also want that

decomposition process will be faster so that there will be lesser time to make organic

fertilizer, and can help farmers grow more organic vegetables as well as to the cleanliness

of the environment.

ABSTRACT

This study entitled “The Effectiveness and Effeciency of Bio-Grinder in Making

Organic Fertilizer” aimed to lessen the time of decaying of biodegradable wastes. This

study aims to help the community needs in terms of segregation and making of organic

fertilizer. This machine turns the biodegradable wastes into smaller pieces which helps in

faster decaying of biodegradable wastes which can be used to fertile the soil.

This study was conducted at Bonuan Buquig National High School from June to

October 2018.

INTRODUCTION

A. Background and Rationale of the Study

Filipinos have been facing different waste management problems caused by lack of

discipline, but sometimes, they just don’t have enough time to segregate waste. Last

November 2015, “plastic man” Professor Vasudevan, developed the machine used for the

project “plastic to pavers” losing attention for biodegradable wastes . The researcher

thought of making a device that will make biodegradable wastes consume less time to

decay without exerting much force and lessen the working time

A Government Mandatory for all ad developers in the country to use waste plastic,

along with bituminous mixes, for road construction. This is to help overcome the growing

problem of plastic waste disposal in India. The technology for this was developed by the

“Plastic Man’ of India, Professor Rajagopalan Vasudevan, Professor of Chemistry at

Thiagarajar College of Engineering, Madurai.

With this idea, the researcher is challenged to make a device that could turn

biodegradable wastes into a more effective organic fertilizer and lessen the time in the

decomposition process to gather more organic fertilizer in minimal time.

Statement of the Problem

This study entitled “The Effectiveness and Efficiency of Bio-Grinder”

investigates the following:

Specifically, it seeks to answer the question:

1. What is the effect of the Bio-Grinder in the everyday lives of the consumer;

a) In the decomposition of the biodegradable wastes at home?

b) In the reduction of waste?

2. How can the Bio-Grinder help in the process of decomposition;

a) As to the biodegradable wastes at home?

b) As to the biodegardable wastes in the community?

3. How could the Bio-Grinder help the environment in terms of decomposition?

Hypothesis

Null hypothesis

There is no significant difference between the Bio-Grinder and chopping knife in

terms of effectiveness and efficiency for fast decaying of biodegradable wastes.

Significance of the Study

This study will benefit the community because it will help in the fast decomposition

of biodegradable wastes, lower the level of pollution and can be used by the farmers and

other industries in the production of other natural fertilizers.

Science and Technology Engineering Program
School year 2018-2019 11
Specifically, it will help the following:

Agricultural sectors. This could lead to the consideration of utilization of cheap, eco-

friendly and economic device from Blender’s Blade, flat sheets from junks, that could help

in the production of natural fertilizers. Eventually it could lead to cheaper machine which

can be used to a more faster decomposition of the biodegradable wastes.

Farmers/Garden owners. The Bio-Grinder could help the farmers in the production of

natural fertilizers and faster decomposition of the biodegradable waste. With the used of

the machine, this could give more nutrients in terms of more volume of decomposed

wastes.

Future researchers. This study will pave a way on creating and widening researches about

Bio-Grinders. It will also serve as a reference and guide for conducting any related studies

in the future. This study can be improved by adding more materials that can be reused for

a grinder

Scope and Delimitation

This research study is limited in terms of the materials used to make the device

work better, since most of the materials came from junk like the worn out blender. They

were gathered at Bonuan Boquig, Dagupan City premises.

The product will only be tested with biodegradable wastes.

This study was conducted at the Bonuan Buquig National High School Science

Laboratory from June – October 2018.

2. Procedures

A. Material Gathering

The researcher gathered blades from worn out or not in used

blenders in nearby houses in the community. Junk flat sheets were bought

from auto mechanic shop in cheaper amount.

B. Procedure in assembling

The Blades are removed from the blender and attached to the rod. The box are

assembled by means of rebater. Blades were attached inside the box.

C. Preparing the biodegradable wastes

Gather vegetable wastes from the market for about 2 kilos. Weight 500 grams

for each test.

D. Testing the Bio-Grinder

Test the Bio-Grinder by its efficiency through Volume Test, Decomposition

Test, Comparison Speed Test and Speed Test for the Bio-Grinder.

Experimental Treatments

To test the effectiveness and efficiency of the Bio-Grinder the researcher used the

following tests: Volume Test, Decomposition Test, Comparison Speed Test and Speed Test

for the Bio-Grinder.

Results and Discussion

Based from the experimental treatments used by the researcher in terms of volume

test, Bio-Grinder is effective in refining the biodegradable wastes and making it into a good

organic fertilizer. With the 66.67 % of efficiency, it implies that decomposition process is

faster. In the comparison speed test, the Bio-Grinder has greater speed in refining the

wastes rather than chopping it manually. This shows that it could help consumers in making

a fertilizer in faster rate of time. The decomposition test shows that the Bio-Grinder makes

the biodegradable wastes decomposed faster because it is more refined and watery. The

speed of the device is faster in refining the biodegradable wastes making it more

decomposed than the chopped and raw wastes.

Based on the results the Bio-Grinder could help the consumers in decomposing

the biodegradable wastes faster and help in reduction of wastes. This could lead to a faster

decomposition and help the environment in nurturing the soil for organic vegetables. This

could also be used in the farming by making better fertilizers.

Summary of the Findings

The Bio-Grinder is effective in the refining and faster method in decomposing of

the biodegradable wastes than chopping mechanically.
