This document describes a 2nd grade English/language arts lesson that uses the web-based tool Popplet to help students retell the details of a story. The teacher will read a book to the class, pausing to ask questions, then lead a discussion to extract the characters, setting, and plot. As a class, they will collaboratively create a Popplet on the smart board to organize these story details. Later, students will independently read another book and make their own Popplet to demonstrate their understanding of that story's details.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL): • Students are able to access this at home on any mobile device or computer. • Can include pictures to help visualize better, also good for EL students.\ • Very easy to use • Students have a choice on how they want to display the information. • Visually impaired students can color coordinate or make the screen bigger to see better.
Lesson idea implementation: The class will come to the carpet and the teacher will read the students FILL IN BOOK. The teacher will tell the students to pay close attention to the characters, setting, and what happens during the book. The teacher will then begin to read the book. As the book is being read, she will pause to ask questions like: “What just happened?” or “What do you think will happen next?” This way the students will stay engaged and thinking throughout the reading. After the teacher finishes the book she will ask who can tell her something about the book. She will look for specific answers relating to the characters, setting and plot of the story. Once the class discusses the book the teacher will open up a new Popplet on the Smart Board. She will lead the students by making the popples and filling them in with the student’s answers. She will model how to to make new popples (squares) and how changing the colors makes visualizing the information much easier. After they have completed filling out the Popplet as a class, the teacher will save it and upload it to the classroom website for parents and students to see.
Reflective Practice: To extend this lesson to a higher LoTi level, the students will then need to read a short story of their choice but on their level. The students will be given time in class to read the story. The students will then create their own Popplet using their own stories details. They may use the one made as a class to reference to. Students will be able to use the laptops or iPads to create their Popplet. Spring 2018_SJB Beyond-the-Basic Productivity Tools (BBPT)
