Part 1:
Introduction and overview
Dear Friend,
Well done and thank you for taking the time to read this. It is an overview of some of
the most powerful information that I have been privileged enough to have been
exposed to over the past 16 or so years.
The question that I have hyper focused on over the past 9 years is WHAT EXACTLY
do the top learners DO to remember the most amount of information in the least
amount of time.
Technically I would need to spend at least 3 full days with you going deeper with
regards to the many powerful ways you can USE this information in your learning
and your life, but this is a great starting point and will should give you wonderful
insight nonetheless.
Everything is getting faster these days. Walking is now speed walking. Food is now
fast food and reading, speed reading. One of the greatest skills you need to develop
and master, is the discernment of what to speed up and what to slow down.
Your time is the most valuable resource you have and because of this I have made
every effort to make this document and corresponding video as “skinny” as
possible. Read it slowly, take notes and enjoy! I have tried to limit this to a 15-20 min
“lesson” or overview.
We are actually going to be working together, so get a pen and piece of paper out,
find a place that has little or no distractions (if possible!) and let’s get started.

So what changed everything for me?
My life changed when I read a quote by Charles Jones. He said:
1) The books you read and 2) The people you spend your time with.
I decided to ACT on this advice and read pretty much everything I could on the topic of memory and speed
learning. I even got on a plane (500 000km+ over a 6 year period!) and started traveling around the world to
pick the brains of the best memory experts I could find. If you watched the clip on the previous page, you
would have been introduced to some of the incredible people I had the privilege of meeting, such as Dr. Yip
who has learned the Oxford (and French) dictionary, word for word, in English and Chinese. (57 000 words!)
This all happened after ACTING on the advice from Charles Jones.
A year or so ago I hired a part time “video guy” to do some filming for me. He said to me that he was trusting
God for camera. I quickly said: “And God is trusting you to DO something with all the incredible potential He
has given you to apply your mind is such a way that you will be able to afford a camera.” Your brain is more
capable than you will ever know. Learn how to use it.
What are the core strategies or ways of thinking that the best learners in the world have mastered?
3 key things:
1) Memory: the ability to store HUGE amounts of information
into long term memory.
The mastering of these 3 core areas enable all the best learners in the world to remember almost infi
nite amounts of information in a very limited amount of time.
What are some of the benefits of learning how to increase your ability to remember more in less time? Also
: how far can you take this thinking if you wanted to?
This seems like an obvious question to ask, but I want to give you insight into how you can apply this to your
life. This has been one of my focus areas over the past 9 years. So what if you can “remember stuff”... how
you APPLY this to your own life is where the real magic lies. This is what excites me.
When I met her in 2006, she had just appeared on Oprah as one of the
worlds smartest kids. She could learn 20 pages of school work in just 10
minutes. When I asked her what her “secret” was she told me that her mom
had just sat with her and taught her how to learn from an early age. I had the
privilege of recently helping Corinna with her thesis on: “The benefits of
memory and speed learning in the world of work.”
I don’t think Corinna knows that I nearly failed University. ;o)

Here is Dominic o’ Brien, 8 x World Memory
Champion and the “Godfather” of memory globally.
She is the 6 x world speed reading champ. Anne read one of the latest Harry
Potter books in just 47 minutes and then did a review on sky news. She
averaged just over 17 pages a minute.

In 2012 I taught Sphe how to compete in a memory competition and after just
5 weeks of training, he broke a world student record by memorizing a 134 digit
number in 15 minutes.
Here is Duncan:
At the end of the second term in 2006 when Duncan was in grade 10 he
attended a PowerStudying course. His dad said that he would give him R500
($50) for every “A” that he got. Big mistake. Duncan went from 1 A in the first
and second terms to 6 A’s in the 3rd term. His average went from 61% - 87%
and he went from 81st in the grade to 6th in the grade. Never underestimate
the power of combining a dream with hard, consistent work that is based on
solid, well thought out and intelligent systems. Duncan finished his Matric year
with 6 A’s.

What have each of these people DONE to achieve such incredible memory feats?
4 things to be exact:
)1 Reason or Desire: They have had a dream or goal BIG enough to beat the temptation of being
distracted. Your brain will continually move towards (and help you find amazing solutions) to those
things that have the greatest relevance and meaning to you. And here is a massive point: Your
brain responds to what YOU tell it is true, so the first place to start is to change your ATTITUDE
towards your work. If you “have” to learn instead of “want” to learn, subconsciously your brain will
continue to disregard everything you learn because it is not deemed important or relevant by you.

3 Discipline and diligence. Evert single day of my life I repeat the following words:
“I get to experience the fullness of life in the way I live and give each day because I choose
to experience the pain (and joy) of discipline and not the pain of regret. Whatever you do,
try your best to live a life of discipline. (And have the courage to keep on keeping on.
Remember: Perfection is not the goal, progress is.)
King Solomon, the wisest and richest man that ever lived, said that discipline and diligence will
sit you amongst kings and queens. He also said that plodding and planning leads to
prosperity and quick fixes lead to poverty. He also said ALL labor leads to profit and idle chatter
leads to poverty.

4 Reflect and get better. The best learners are always improving. They are purposeful about
dedicating time to improving the way that they think daily, weekly, monthly and yearly. They
experience almost unnatural elements of “grace” simply because they are way more concerned
about improving their own game (and having the courage to get back out there) and therefore
don’t have time to compare themselves to others. Perfection is actually the enemy. Becoming
and focusing on becoming the best version of yourself possible is the goal and when this is done
correctly, more often than not, extraordinary achievements follow from this.
So technically, the more products or services you can produce that are appreciated and valued by
people, the more intelligent you are. This is huge and should be the focal point of your “learning
journey” and should direct and inspire you.

Einstein said that Genius is the ability to put into
effect what is on your mind.
If you have these thought in mind, your learning will take on much greater meaning. You won’t just be
studying for a test or attending a workshop. You will be growing your intelligence by deliberately asking
yourself the question: “How am I going to USE this information to become more intelligent, to solve prob-
lems and become extremely valuable.
It has been proven on a physiological level that your brain physically changes shape every time you learn
effectively and information is stored effectively into your long term memory. So you do become more
intelligent with deliberate practice and focused learning. You have the ability to become more intelligent. You
can change your destiny.

It is also the most daunting time... only if your thinking is stagnant. There
is infinite opportunity but most people are not as prepared as they can be.

Below are 10 random words.What I want you to do, is time yourself 1 minute to try and remember as many
as possible in perfect order. Be strict with time. When the timer is up, don’t look at the words and follow
my instructions on the next page.

If you are like most people, all you want to do right now is scribble down what you just “learnt.”
But stay with me because you are just about to understand the biggest reason why people forget
whatever they try and learn, just minutes after learning.
If I say the words: Surfboard, printer, speech, computer, curiosity, teacher etc. Am I helping you or confusing
you? What if you now attended another lecture if you are a student or business presentation if you are a
business professional. What would happen to this information you have just “learnt?”

This is the equivalent of pouring water into a bath
that does not have a plug..
If you are a student, this “over writing” process is the primary reason why
you procrastinate and leave learning till the last minute because if you
studied a week before a test, you would remember little to nothing by the
time the exam arrives.
If you are a parent with a young child, your child has a lifetime of learning
ahead of him.You need to do everything in your power to equip your child
with tools to help him retain what he learns each day, week, month and year.
If you own a business, how much money do you spend on staff training
that is quickly forgotten and never applied? Before you send you staff on
any further training courses, I would highly recommend equipping them first
with a strategy or approach they can use to “hold or store” the information
they are taught, so they can use and apply this in your business.
Before you try and write down what you can remember from those
10 words, I want to do a quick exercise with you.
On the next page, there are 2 diagrams. What I want you to do is turn to the next page and give yourself
1 second to count how many dots are in figure 1.When you are ready, you can do that now and then
turn back to this page.
How many did you see? If you need another second, you can have another quick look. Now I want you to
turn to the next page and look at the dots in figure 2. Don’t cheat, only give yourself 1 second.

Question:
Which was easier? Why? Most people approach their learning the same way they approach the second set
of dots. It doesn’t matter how many times you revise your work, progress is not made and success is not
achieved.
If you try and cut down a tree using only a hammer, you will be there a long time.
Try and recall as many words as you can from memory test 1. How did you do?
You need to combine both your LEFT and RIGHT hemispheres of the brain
when trying to learn new information. The left side of the brain is respon-
sible for order, structure, logic, analytical thinking and language. The right
side deals with creativity, imagination, thinking, feeling, emotion and day
dreaming. Bring these together and you get “bingo.”

The first tool is more of a way of thinking than it is a physical technique or strategy. Your brain does not
know what is real or not, it simply responds to what you tell it is true. Therefore one of the most power-
ful ways to increase your ability to remember is if you add NOVELTY or SENSORY STIMULATION to
your approach.
You need to hear, touch, smell, see your work in a way that stimulates your imagination and gets your
creative juices flowing. You need to make something bigger or smaller or wild, personal or funny. If you
blow something up in your mind, brilliant! The more bizarre or crazy the analogy, the better. The more
creative you are, the more connections are made to long term memory and this strengthens or
enhances the chance of the memory staying in long term for extended periods of time.
I want to now share an extremely powerful strategy with you that will help
you “store” information into your long term memory. The reason it is so
powerful is simply because it enables you to be very structured and
creative at the same time and allows for consistent revision or
reinforcement to take place. This is 1 of 9 of the most powerful memory
systems I believe exists.
Exercise:
What I want you to do, is choose a journey made up of 10 places that you know well
. (Flowing from one place to another)
1) Bed
2) Shower
3) Passage
4) Stairs
5) Kitchen etc
Write down these 10 places and really visualize each step of the way.
Give yourself about a minute or 2 to do this.

What I am going to do, is give you a new list of 10 words to “place” or imagine on to each of these 10
locations. Word number 1 on the test you will visualize on location number 1. Word number 2 on the list,
you will visualize on location number 2 etc.
Once you have done all 10, you can go back and revise all of them. Try your best to add as much novelty and
sensory stimulation as possible to each word on each location. Try and make word on each location as alive
and creative as possible.
Word number 2 is “end.” This may seem a little weird to put the this word on your location no 2 because it is
NOT the end of your journey, but maybe you can put a STOP sign in this location or the edge of a cliff that
you must not go near to.
Once you have done all 10 words, go back to the beginning and try revise.
Give yourself about 2 minutes to try and do this exercise. Spend 1 minute relaxing before you begin. You
can increase your ability to store as well as recall information if you are in the right state of mind.
If you are not sure of what to do, re read the instructions carefully and when you are ready, you can store
the following 10 words on each of each of your 10 locations.

If you need another minute, feel free to give yourself this time, but having a somewhat strict time limit is
essential as your brain will work at a pace relative to the time you give it. This is one of the best ways to
increase your speed of learning... to limit the time taken to complete a task.
Before you write down your answers, if I said to you the words: Energy, tools. discipline, end, goal, first... am I
confusing you? Probably not. Why? Because you have now “stored” these words effectively and they are no
longer in danger of being “overwritten” by new information.
When you are ready, you can write out the 10 words. You may look at your “journey” if you like.
Once you are finished, you can look at the words and mark yourself.

The reason this technique is also so powerful is because your brain builds
on to what it already knows and therefore your locations on your journey
have the potential to “hook” or store new information quite easily. Also,
the more you revise, the easier and quicker your recall becomes.
