Narrowing Down a Research Topic

Questions to ask:
1. Is the research we are going to make relevant and timely?
2. What are some recommendations of researchers who have studied similar topics in the past?
3. What issues/concerns have been studied about the research topic identified?
4. How is our topic different from those that have already been studied about?
5. How did other researchers gather data for their study? How are we planning on gathering data
for ours?

Summarize your responses using the inverted pyramid below:

Identifying the Research Problem

Questions to ask:

Question Response
1. Is the research problem
answerable by a yes/no?

2. What are the variables of the

study, and does the problem
imply a relationship between
them?

3. Is the problem stated in a clear

and unambiguous manner?
4. Does it imply interpretation
and analysis of data? How?
5. Is it new?
6. Is it interesting?
7. Is it practical?
8. Is it innovative?
9. Is it cost-effective? How much

Questions Response
1. Aim
2. Topic
3. Place
4. Period
5. Population

Writing the background of your study: Concept Map

1. Why did you choose to study this topic?

(Write your personal observations, difficulties, issues, and other relevant experiences that led you to
conduct a study about the topic at hand. Cite relevant studies that might have caught your interest to
pursue the study.)

2. Where will it be conducted?

(Describe the setting or the place where the research will take place. Highlight the need of the
locality implying the necessity of the study to be conducted)

3. What are the bases that support or negate your claims as a researcher?
(Present relevant literature from books, or other researches related to the study you are about
to conduct.)

4. Why is there is a need for the study to be conducted?

(Cite benefits and advantages that will result from the study. Establish the importance of

Writing the Research Questions

Questions to ask:

1. What is being asked in each question?

2. Have all the variables in the study been identified?
3. Are all the questions related to one another?
4. Will answering the three sub-questions lead to an explicit course of action?
5. Is this course of action seen on the MQ?
