Such courageous mortals! You have come across the most dauntless of them all.

I am Artemis,
the Moon Goddess, Lady of Wild Things, and huntsman-in-chief to the gods. I am a mighty huntress
forever chaste. I am the daughter of Zeus and Leto, the twin sister of Apollo, the mighty musician, the
most Greek of all the gods.
I have roamed around the vast wilderness of forests. I fancy the wild chases over the mountains.
I destroy defiant mortals with my infallible silver arrows. You would not want to displease me, for I could
love with the heat of a thousand fires, but I could also be cold and unforgiving. I am the guardian of the
welfare of women and the protectress of the dewy youth. I believe that men are lustful, deceitful
creatures and I will never give in to any of their tricks. I remember, I once turned a man into a stag and
fed him to my hounds. I listened to his cries as he felt the agonizing pain of being slowly ripped into
pieces. Ha! Fun times.
Then there came another man. He was of a peculiar kind. He entered into one of my forests
thinking he could hunt like me. But of course, no. No one ever matched the skills of the Moon Goddess.
That mortal was just mighty, brave, swift, and heroic. Orion was his name.
Not before long, I was hunting and competing with him in races and archery competitions. He
became my greatest hunting companion. At night, we sat by the fire and exchanged stories and secrets.
One day, Apollo, my dearest twin brother, came to me and said that someone killed a forest priestess
and was trying to escape across the sea. When we reached the shore, Apollo pointed to a tiny speck on
the ocean assuring me that it was indeed the perpetrator. So I aimed, and I loosed my silver arrow with
unerring accuracy, and that arrow made its mark. Impressive? I know. However, that arrow did not kill a
manslayer. It killed an innocent man. At once, I realized that I was tricked by my own brother for he
could not endure my love for a mortal. Yes! I have killed Orion! I have slain the only man that I loved …
with my own infallible silver arrows! You all have beheld Orion. For he is the mightiest stellar. I turned
him into a cluster of stars. So when the moon takes its place, he will be there; when the night devours
the humankind I can behold him once more, so when the darkness envelopes the earth he can hunt with
me still.
