Grammar

Weformthepresent tense usingthe base form of theinfinitive (withoutthe TO).

In general, in thethirdpersonweadd 'S' in thethirdperson.

Thespellingfortheverb in thethirdpersondiffersdependingontheending of
thatverb:

1. Forverbsthatend in -O, -CH, -SH, -SS, -X, or -Z weadd -ES in

 kiss – kisses

 fix – fixes

 buzz – buzzes

2. Forverbsthatend in a consonant + Y, weremovethe Y and add -IES.

NegativeSentences in the Simple Present Tense

To make a negativesentence in English wenormally


use Don'torDoesn't withallverbs EXCEPT To Be and Modal verbs (can, might,
should etc.).

 Affirmative: Youspeak French.


Negative: You don't speak French.

Youwillseethatweadd don't betweenthesubject and theverb. We


use Don't whenthesubjectis I, you, we or they.

 Affirmative: He speaks German.


Negative: He doesn't speak German.

Whenthesubjectis he, she or it, weadd doesn't betweenthesubject and


theverb to make a negativesentence. Noticethattheletter S at theend of theverb
in theaffirmativesentence (becauseitis in thirdperson) disappears in
thenegativesentence. Wewillseethereasonwhybelow.

NegativeContractions

Don't = Do not
Doesn't = Doesnot

I don't likemeat = I do not likemeat.

Thereis no difference in meaningthoughwenormally use contractions in spoken


English.

Word Order of NegativeSentences

Theinfinitivewithout TO beforetheverb. Instead of theinfinitive To
have itisjustthe have part.

Rememberthattheinfinitiveistheverbbeforeitisconjugated (changed) and


itbeginswith TO. Forexample: to have, to eat, to go, to live, to speak etc.

Examples of NegativeSentenceswithDon't and Doesn't:

 You don't speakArabic.

 John doesn't speakItalian.

 We don't have time for a rest.
