Helping Hands announces ministry services coordinator
Helping Hands, after much prayerful and diligent
review throughout the summer, is announcing that
they have filled the role of the ministry services coordi-
nator position. Effective Oct. 1, Deb Dexter serve Help-
ing Hands, and the community, in this very important
role for the new vision that is being developed for this
community ministry.
Dexter has a diverse background and lives west of
Howard City. She currently attends Grace Community
Church. She has a bachelor of science degree from In-
diana University and has worked in childhood educa-
tion, counseling and various other ministry service po-
sitions. She is actively involved in a number of service
areas at Grace Community Church and was previously
actively involved in children’s worship and VBS at Pine
Grove Community Church for approximately 5 years.
Her volunteer experience involves serving in food
banks in Maine and Indiana. She has actively been
involved in fundraising activities for the school and
has worked hand in hand with teachers, students, ad-
ministrators and coaches. She also has been a Sunday
school teacher and leaders of GEMS girls club, Patch
the Pirate and coordinates weekly family dinners at
Grace Community Church.
Initially the role of ministry services coordinator
will be approximately 10 to 12 hours per week and Dex-
ter will be learning more about the churches and vol-
unteers that serve as the strong foundation for Help-
ing Hands. As these bonds are strengthened, Helping
Hands will begin trying to develop a network of re-
sources that go beyond just providing food and will
strive to take the level of service that Helping Hands
provides to the community to a whole new level.
In addition to the new vision involved with the Min-
istry Services Coordinator position, Helping Hands
continue to seek donations to assist with its new build-
ing project. This project will be constructed just south
of the Howard City VFW hall and will begin only when
adequate financial resources have been raised for con-
struction.

fixed the furnace.

SIDNEY – “Merry Melodies,” a musi-
cal recital by Montcalm Community Col-

Newaygo High School Marching Band
heading to state competition
Congratulations to the Newaygo High School
Marching Band on their first place victory at the
Jenison Invitational held on Saturday, Oct. 23.
The band also won the caption award for best
general effect! This was their second competition in
the MCBA (Michigan Competing Band Association)
where they competed with bands representing Wa-
tervliet, Kent City, Hartford, Parchment, Comstock
Park, Belding, Grant and Godwin Heights. After
this competition, they were ranked second in the
State. The band is headed to state competition on
Nov. 6 at Ford Field.
The Michigan Competing Band Association is
a Michigan non-profit corporation dedicated to
the promotion of instrumental music education in
Michigan schools. Bands are divided into flights
based on their school enrollment. This is adjusted
every year based on how many bands commit to
competing in MCBA. They split bands into four
“flights,” Flight I, II, III, and IV.

came proud parents of a baby boy at Caron City Hospi-

Many thanks to those who helped make the 7th Annual
Pumpkin Party such a great event. We had over 100 children and
nearly 80 adults in attendance on October 30. The event was held
at Christ the King Catholic Church.
Children and parents participated in games, hayrides, face-
painting, pumpkin carving, and cake-walking, and enjoyed a va-
riety of treats as well.

Michigan Gov. Jennifer M. Granholm has proclaimed October as

“Michigan Car-Deer Crash Safety Awareness Month.”
In Michigan in 2009 there were 61,486 reported car-deer crashes with 10 motorists killed and 1,648
injured. About 80 percent of all car-deer crashes take place on two-lane roads between dusk and dawn.
(Of the reported car-deer accidents Kent County is number one and Montcalm County is number five in
the state’s highest accident rate).
What can you do?
• Stay aware, awake, alert, and sober.
• Remember, safety belts are your best defense in any collision.
• Be alert for deer in spring and fall, especially at dawn and dusk.
• Heed deer crossing and speed limit signs, particularly on two-lane roads.
If a crash is unavoidable:

Why should I quit?
Your health
Health concerns usually top the list
of reasons people give for quitting
smoking. This is a very real concern:
Half of all smokers who keep smok-
ing will end up dying from a smok-
ing-related illness. In the US alone,
smoking is responsible for nearly 1
in 5 deaths, and about 8.6 million
people suffer from smoking-related
lung and heart diseases.
Cancer
Nearly everyone knows that smok-
ing can cause lung cancer, but few
people realize it is also a risk factor
for many other kinds of cancer too,
including cancer of the mouth, voice
box (larynx), throat (pharynx), esoph-
agus, bladder, kidney, pancreas, cer-
vix, stomach, and some leukemias.
Lung diseases
Pneumonia is included in the list
of diseases known to be caused by
smoking. Smoking also increases
your risk of getting lung diseases like
emphysema and chronic bronchitis.
These diseases are grouped together
under the term COPD (chronic ob-
structive pulmonary disease). COPD
causes on-going (chronic) illness and
disability, and worsens over time --
sometimes becoming fatal. Emphy-
sema and chronic bronchitis can be
found in people as young as 40, but
are usually found later in life, when
the symptoms get much worse. Long-
term smokers have the highest risk
of developing severe COPD.
Heart attacks, strokes,
and blood vessel diseases
Smokers are twice as likely to die
from heart attacks as are non-smok-
ers. And smoking is a major risk fac-
tor for peripheral vascular disease,
a narrowing of the blood vessels
that carry blood to the leg and arm
muscles. Smoking also affects the
walls of the vessels that carry blood
to the brain (carotid arteries), which
can cause strokes. Men who smoke
are more likely to develop erectile
dysfunction (impotence) because of
blood vessel disease.
Blindness and
other problems
Smoking causes an increased risk of
macular degeneration, one of the
most common causes of blindness
in older people. It also causes pre-
mature wrinkling of the skin, bad
breath, gum and tooth problems,
bad-smelling clothes and hair, yellow
fingernails.

likely to miscarry (lose the baby) or
have a lower birth-weight baby. And

Based on data collected in the late
1990s, the US Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention (CDC) esti-
mated that adult male smokers lost
an average of 13.2 years of life and
female smokers lost 14.5 years of life
because of smoking. And given the
diseases that smoking can cause, it
can steal your quality of life long be-
fore you die. Smoking-related illness
can limit your activities by making it
harder to breathe, get around, work,
or play.
Why quit now?
No matter how old you are or how
long you’ve smoked, quitting can
help you live longer and be health-
ier. People who stop smoking before
age 50 cut their risk of dying in the
next 15 years in half compared with
those who keep smoking. Ex-smok-
ers enjoy a higher quality of life with
fewer illnesses from cold and flu vi-
ruses, better self-reported health,
and reduced rates of bronchitis and
pneumonia.
For decades the Surgeon General has
reported the health risks linked to
smoking. In 1990, the Surgeon Gen-

An Indication Of Your Health?

Take a look at your fingernails. How would you describe them?
Are they long and beautiful? Short and stubby? Beyond that,

Here is a brief list of nail plate conditions and the health prob-
lems sometimes associated with them:
• Dry, cracked, brittle nails-calcium or fatty acids deficiency
• Flat, thin nails-vitamin deficiency
• Hangnails-folic acid or vitamin C deficiency
• Raised nails or nails that curl under-respiratory problems
• Square, wide nails-hormonal disorders
• Horizontal ridges in nails-physical or mental stress
• Vertical ridges in nails-iron deficiency, kidney problems or
poor nutrient absorption
Color can also be an indication that something is not quite
right. Healthy nail beds should be rosy pink or peach. The
presence of any other colors may indicate a health problem.
Here is a brief list of nail bed colors and the health problems
sometimes associated with them:
• Pale nail beds-anemia
• Half-white, half-pink nail beds-kidney problems
• Blue nail beds-lung problems
• Dark blue lines in the nail beds-skin cancer
• Tiny black streaks in the nail beds-melanoma
• Green nail beds-infection
• Reddish-brown nail beds-folic acid, protein or vitamin C
deficiency
• Irregular red lines at the base of the nail beds-lupus
• White nail beds-liver problems
• White spots in the nail beds-iron or zinc deficiency
• White-lined bands in the nail beds-protein deficiency
• White lines in or across the nail beds-fever, heart disease,
iron or zinc deficiency, or kidney or liver problems
• Yellow nail beds-liver or lung problems
• Yellow nail beds tinged with blue-diabetes
Nail plate condition and nail bed color may point to the pres-
ence of a particular health problem but are by no means a sure
indication. Something else could be at work. To find out for
sure, make an appointment with your physician.

Chronic Low Back Pain
This is one of the most common complaints we see in a busy medical office. It is the most common reason that
people lose time at work.
Most back problems begin with an original injury of some sort. There is something that sets the stage for this
ongoing problem. Sometimes a childhood event, sometimes an accident, sometimes loss of muscular strength
and conditioning, sometimes a deficiency in the material needed to make cartilage and bone.
The natural approach to Chronic Low Back Pain has multiple steps.
If there is an acute injury begin with Homeopathic Arnica and see your friendly Chiropractor or Massage

If the initial injury is old, it is still important to take Hom. Arnica daily for about one week. This will remove the

If the injury is older than five years, you probably have formed bone spurs in the
inflamed ligaments and tendons Herbal Hydrangea, taken one capsule three times per
day for one month with Hom. Calcerea Carbonicum 6C, taken one pellet per day for
three months, has been shown to breakdown bone spurs in the older injuries. If that
does not work, you can substitute Hom. Hekla Lava 6C for the Calcerea Carbonicum and
repeat the Hydrangea for one month.
