 About The Organization

Coal India Limited (CIL) is an Indian state-controlled coal mining company and
the largest coal-producing company in the world and a Maharatna company. The
nature of work includes Underground production and development miners drill,
blast, operate mining machinery, and perform related duties to extract coal and
ore in underground mine-sand to construct tunnels, passageways, and shafts to
facilitate mining operations. This type of work is done by daily- site contracted
people.
The company contributes to around 82% of the coal production in India. It
produced 554.14 million tonnes of raw coal in 2017-18. The statistics prove that
this organization requires office people as well. Like, Marketing Advisor, Cost
Accountant, Sales Manager, and HR Department to monitor people. This office
team act as a base for planning, organizing, directing &controlling all the daily-
site operations.
 About The Employee
Newly recruited office employee Mr. Prakash Kothari is a visually –impaired
person. This person has recently met with an accident. He has vast knowledge &
experience in the field of accounting work and has great command over computer
software like Tally ERP 9. For him, his work is not a challenge; his only difficulty
is his eye-disability.

 Role Of Employee
The employee is appointed as an assistant accountant at the workplace. He
documents financial transactions by entering accounting information. He prepares
asset, liability and capital account entries by compiling and analyzing accounting
information. He performs financial calculations and gives the management
financial advice. All this is done under the supervision of the chief accountant.

 Management’s Approach Towards This Employee

The management is happy with the skill-set and experience of Mr. Prakash and is
likely to retain the employee for long as a sub-junior accountant. The
administration wants the employee to feel special about his job and being
comfortable with his job role and at the workplace. The board decides to provide
certain facilities to his employee for employee’s convenience and his ease-at-
work.
How to make the workplace accessible and blind friendly?

1. The Read-Read: The Read -Read is an educational device that teaches Braille – without a
teacher. Tablets for each letter are placed into a slot on the device. When a tablet is
touched, audio mimicking the sound for each letter is heard. As the employee recently
had an eye-disability, he must learn the Braille first.
2. Screen Reading Software: Screen readers are software programs that allow blind or
visually impaired users to read the text that is displayed on the computer screen with a
speech synthesizer or Braille display.

3. Braille e-book Reader / Tablet: This Braille tablet is the first of its kind. Designed to read
entire pages of text rather than one line, this tablet will use air or fluid to push up Braille
letters, eliminating the need for excessive motors that would make the device too large.

4.Finger Reader: A good example of a new way of interaction. It is a wearable device, a very
chunky ring that sits on the finger and is capable of detecting and interpreting the 12-point
printed text as the user scans his or her finger across it. It reads aloud in real-time. Small
vibrations alert the wearer to any deviation off the line.
4. Assisted Vision Smart Glasses: A pair of glasses that can enable someone with very little
sight to allow them to walk around unfamiliar places, to recognize obstacles, and to get
greater independence. This Helmet Prototype also emits a warning sound when the
wearer is too close to an obstacle, to ensure safety.

6. Microphone/ Headset: It helps the user to speak into the microphone or headset to type or
control the computer. This helps the user to keep command over the computer and allows
him to pass instructions.

Apart from these gadgets, Different types of lighting and Contrasting colors allows a
person with limited sight to identify different surfaces. For example, a colored strip along
the edge of each stair will help the employee more easily find and navigate the stairs with
a reduced risk of falling. Door frames shall be in a color that contrasts with the wall also
helps an individual with some vision to enter and exit more easily. Plenty of lighting in
the work area aids in work tasks. Additionally, a workspace that can be easily navigated
is a must.

 Some other things to make the employee comfortable with the organization
and the colleague

1. Wheelchair Accommodation at the workplace: The employee can be provided with the
wheelchair to move around easily through the office without worrying about obstacles
such as narrow doorways, stairs, and inadequate restroom facilities. Making changes to
improve access can make a huge difference in how the specially-abled employee
performs and feels when he comes to work.
2. Work from home option:- As long as it doesn’t interfere with productivity, employees who are
blind or visually impaired should be able to request a work from home arrangement when their
disability makes it difficult for them to travel to the office (e.g. in inclement weather).

3. Guide Dog: The guide dog is a "mobility aid" that can enable people who are blind or have
low vision to travel safely. They are assistance dogs trained to lead blind and visually
impaired people around obstacles. Even in offices with no-pet policies, employees who use guide
dogs should be able to request an exception to allow them to bring their dog to work.

4. The Talking Laundry Module: Developed by a self-taught 14-year-old programmer, the

Talking Laundry Module is a small device that attaches to your washer and dryer and reads out
various settings. The device is designed to help the visually impaired know how much time is
left in their wash cycle and to select the correct settings.
 CONCLUSION
People with visual disabilities are as effective as sighted people, yet they experience
exclusion at some level – both in jobs and the workplace itself. It is necessary for an
organization to make them feel welcomed. Every organization must take an initiative to
make its facilities inclusive to ensure safety and accessibility to all participants who are
blind & visually impaired. It doesn’t require a great deal of time or a lot of money.
