• acts as an additional barrier against penetrating liquid.
Pressure buildup within the oil housing is reduced by means of the builtin air volume.

12
Product Description, Electrical motor

Electrical motor

Description The motor is a squirrel cage induction design with a maximum of 30 evenly spaced starts
per hour.
The motor can be run
• continuously or
• intermittently.

Variation of The motor is designed to

rated voltage • supply its rated output at ±5 % variation of the rated voltage and
• operate with a voltage imbalance of up to 2 % between phases.
±10 % variation of the rated voltage can be accepted, without overheating the motor,
provided that the motor does not run continuously at full load.

Starting The motor has a low starting current and is designed for directonline start.
current Stardelta start is not recommended, as the motor may not come up to speed in the
stardelta connection.

Stator The stator is:

• insulated in accordance with class H, IEC 85, which means that the insulation of the
stator winding can resist a temperature up to +180 °C (356 °F).
• shrink fit in the stator housing.
• trickle impregnated with class H resin.

Cooling The motor is hermetically enclosed in air and cooled by the surrounding liquid.

13
Product Description, Shaft and Bearings

Shaft and Bearings

Description Motor shaft: The motor shaft is

• sealed off from the media and
• resistant to corrosion in case of leakage.
The rotor is shrinkfit on to the shaft and these parts are delivered as one unit.
Bearings: The bearings consist of:
• one main bearing and
• two support bearings.
Bearing cage: Bearings with metal cages (protection against elevated temperatures) are
recommended for warm liquid applications. In all other applications, bearings with glass
fibre reinforced nylon cages are a sufficient alternative.

3. Support bearing, cylindrical roller bearing
4. Main bearing, angular contact ball bearing

Bearing The bearings have a calculated lifetime of minimum 100.000 hours L10aa.
lifetime Lifetime formula: L10aa is a refined lifetime formula released by SKF (a global supplier of
bearings). It contains the effects of the fatigue limit of the material and the contamination
of the lubricant.

The calculated lifetime is not a warranty.

14
Product Description, Mechanical Face Seal

Mechanical Face Seal

Purpose The mechanical face seal is devised to isolate the motor, bearings and electrical parts of
the drive unit from the surrounding media.

Description The ITT Flygt seal system is based on a double seal arrangement with an intermediate
buffer cavity (seal housing filled with oil) in between.
The mechanical face seal consists of one stationary and one rotating seal ring that are
factoryassembled as a unit. The seal faces are protected from any dirt and solids that
could cause leakage.
The seal unit has a bidirectional mechanical torque transmission from the shaft by a
drive notch fitted in to the drive slot in the shaft. Internally, the seal unit relies only on
mechanical torque locks and torque transmission. The stationary seal ring is secured
by Oring friction to the bearing housing.

15
Product Description, Mechanical Face Seal

Illustration: This illustration shows where the mechanical face seal is located.
Seal
placement 1

1. Mechanical face seal (plugintype)

Controlled The mechanical face seal is designed to work on the controlled leakage principle where a
leakage minimal amount of oil/media is allowed to enter the space between the seal rings. This
principle creates a hydrodynamic film, which lubricates the seal faces.
In case of leakage through the outer seal, the liquid will enter the seal housing. Depending
on the type of oil that is used in the seal housing the liquid can be detected either by
the emulsion it creates or by the fact that it collects at the bottom of the seal housing,
separated from the oil.

Outer seal The outer seal is available in two different materials:

material • corrosion resistant tungsten carbide (WCCR) and
• silicone carbide (RSiC)
WCCR is the optimum choice in most applications and has a corrosion resistance
capability down to a pH of 3.
RSiC is a better choice when:
• the pH is lower than 3 and
• mixing small particles that have a hardness greater than WCCŔs hardness

Handling seals The seal faces in the seal unit are in contact with each other at all times and shall not be
at service disassembled.
If the mechanical seal unit is removed from the product, it must be replaced by a new
one. The new seal unit is easy to mount without risk of contamination of seal faces or
misalignment of seal rings. The seals smooth exterior makes it resistant to wear and
clogging.

16

Propeller Unit

Introduction The propeller unit consists of a:

• two or threebladed propeller
• hub and
• conical shaft
The propeller blades are welded to the hub and attached to the shaft by a screw.
The tightening torque of the screw gives a corresponding friction force between the
coneshaped shaft end and the propeller hub which provides the torque to the propeller.

• smooth surface and
• are backswept which gives a highly efficient and clogfree operation.

Reference For more information about propellers, see Product Data, page 31.

20
Product Description, Jet ring and Vortex shield

Jet ring and Vortex shield

Introduction The product may be equipped with a jet ring and vortex shield.
It should be noted that the power could be up to 20 % lower for a propeller operating
with a jet ring.

Purpose The jet ring directs the mixer jet and improves the efficiency.
The vortex shield is for use in applications where the liquid depth is very shallow or where
the product may be placed close to the surface.

Illustration This illustration shows the mixer alternatives with jet ring and vortex shield.

1. Basic mixer design

2. Jet ring
3. Jet ring and vortex shield
4. Mixer with vortex shield

21
Product Description, Jet ring and Vortex shield

Jet ring The jet ring reduces losses related to the change of flow direction, as well as losses
from blade tip recirculation.
Using a jet ring results in an efficiency increase of 10–15 % in water and even more in
viscous media.
Use:
A jet ring is recommended when there is a need to
• improve capacity and hydraulic efficiency
• maintain the capacity in viscous liquids and consistency media
• protect the propeller or
• avoid vortex
Don’t use:
A jet ring is not recommended to be used when
• a large throughlet is required
• mechanical work on surface crust (high shear) is needed
• the entrance opening is too small for the jet ring
• operating in small tanks with high turbulence inflow to the mixer
• the price of the jet ring is not in proportion to its benefits or
• when there is risk for clogging.

Vortex shield A vortex shield may be used to prevent air vortices to be drawn from the surface into the
propeller, which may cause damage to the propeller and a drop in performance.

23
Product Description, Seal protection ring

Seal protection ring

Description The purpose of the seal protection ring is to

• prevent material buildup around the shaft in media with stringy content and
• reduce the risk for clogging of the propeller blades.
It is recommended that seal protectors are applied as standard for all WWTP applications
and other applications where stringy material (long fibers, e.g. hair) may exists.
Seal protector shall not be used in:
• temperatures above 40 °C (104 °F)
• applications such as paper pulp and
• heavily abrasive media.

Illustration This illustration shows an example of a mixer with a seal protection ring (1).

24
Product Description, Cutting ring

Cutting ring

Description The purpose of a cutting ring is to prevent clogging of the hub area.
Cutting rings are intended to be used in liquids where long fibers, strings etc. will be mixed
or pumped. They are mainly an option when seal protector for some reason has failed or
when very harsh conditions can be anticipated.
The cutting rings may be used
• with flushing or
• without flushing.

Illustration This illustration shows accessories for cutting ring.

25
Product Description, Seal flushing

Seal flushing

Description The purpose of seal flushing is to prevent very fine particles (smaller particles than the
liquid film between the surfaces of the mechanical seal) from penetrating past the outer
seal.
The flushing media can be
• water or
• air.
Other flushing media can be used provided that the materials in the hub area can
withstand the media.
Principle: The flushing media is connected to an inlet pipe. The lip seal that seals against
the propeller hub, opens for inner pressure and is designed to allow the flushing media
to disappear.

Illustration This illustration shows the accessories for seal flushing.

is cooled by the surrounding liquid. In some cases the cooling has to be external with a
cooling jacket.
If the cooling jacket option is used at liquid temperatures over +40 °C (104 °F), there
are no warm liquid motor power limitations.
Principle: Pipes and couplings are connected between the cooling jacket and the fixing
plate. Cooling water enters through the fixing plate at the connection, see illustration.
For easy handling, the seal flushing hole may be equipped with hydraulic coupling or
coupling with hose clamps.

Product Data, Material characteristics

Material characteristics

ASTM 304 Stainless steel 304 possesses a good combination of strength, corrosion resistance and
fabricability.

ASTM 316L The stainless steel ASTM 316L is an austenitic steel with good corrosion resistance in
general. Due to the addition of molybden, its sensitivity to pitting and crevise corrosion is
lower than for many other austenitic steels.
ASTM 316L is resistant in many solutions at high concentration and temperatures, for
example:
• Citric acids
• Phosphoric acids
• Lactic acids
• Nitric acids

HiChrome Hichrome is an extremely abrasionresistant alloy, but with limited corrosion resistance
(Cast iron) capabilities. The material is recommended when mixing hard mineral slurries.

Hichrome is not recommended for use in media below a pH of 5.5.

Reference For detailed information about Stainless steel and its durability in a specific media, see
ITT Flygt CREST program.

Accessories, Electric starters

Electric starters

Description The machine may be equipped with an electrical starter to protect the product.
It is recommended that the electrical starter should have
• a motor protection of a wellknown manufacturer.
• protection for builtin sensors.

For explosionproof versions the starter must be approved for use in hazardous area.

Reference For information about available starters supplied by ITT Flygt, see Starters at ITT Flygt
intranet, Sales support, Monitoring & Control.

44
Accessories, Zinc anodes

Zinc anodes

Description The machine can be equipped with zincanodes.

It is recommended to use zincanodes when mixing/pumping in sea water or other liquids
with chloride contact greater than 200 ppm (stainless steel 304) or 500 ppm (stainless
steel 316L).

Reference For available zincanodes part number, see ITT Flygt, Parts List.

45
Accessories, Variable Frequency Drive (VFD)

Variable Frequency Drive (VFD)

Description The machine can be equipped with Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) which is a way to
achieve a variable speed motor.
Nuisance: The fast switching by the VFD generates high frequency harmonics which can
lead to problems such as nuisance tripping of control equipment.

Cables By using a shielded cable and appropriate filters the nuisance tripping of control equipment
can be minimized. The filter may be connected between the monitoring conductors (T1,
T2) and ground (PE).
Cables containing both power and pilot cores should be kept to a minimum length.
Recommended cable: NSSHÖU../3E +ST

Reference For information about VFD supplied by ITT Flygt, see Variable Frequency Drives at ITT

Installation, Installation Requirements

Installation Requirements

Introduction ITT Flygt supplies equipment for a semipermanent mode of installation, that is guide bar
systems. The product can be installed on:
• rigid structures
• pillars
• stands
• gratings
• anchored rafts.

Requirements For continuously operating mixers, the product should not be installed where
• there are obstacles in front of the product.
• the flow on the suction side of the product is obstructed due to the design of the tank.
• the propeller can draw down air (snore condition).

Personal When mixing near a lake or similar (for example jetties, beaches, ponds, fountains) there
safety must be a safety distance between any person and the mixer, if the person is in contact
with the mixed media.
Safety distance:
The safety distance is 20 m

Minimum This table shows the minimum distances that should be observed in connection with
distance the installation work.
Distance between the propeller and the should not be less than ...
...
side wall 0.5 times the propeller diameter.
bottom 1 propeller diameter.
background wall 1.5 times the propeller diameter.

Obstacles and walls downstream of mixer: The clear distance (free of obstructions)
downstream of the mixer should be at least 10 times the propeller diameter.

Submergence The required submergence depends on the flow conditions. Recommended submergence
values are based on low viscous liquids and the largest propeller angle.
Submergence levels:
• Without vortex shield = 900 mm
• With vortex shield = 400 mm

48
Installation, Installation Alternatives

Installation Alternatives

Introduction The product may be installed:

• in an empty or filled tank
• on a turnable guide bar or on fixed structures
• with a single guide bar system
• with a mounting flange or
• as a PPpump

Reference For more information about possible installation alternatives, see ITT Flygt brochure Mixer
Positioning Principles (art. nr: 892731).

Single Guide Bar System

Single guide In a single guide bar system, the mixer is lowered or raised along a guide bar that is
bar system connected to the wall and/or floor with brackets.
The single guide bar system may be installed:
• with intermediate support or
• without intermediate support
Guide bar system with intermediate support is usually used in tanks over 6 meters (20
ft) depth. In this installation an intermediate bracket is used between the bottom and
upper bracket.
In both systems the lower bracket may be fixed to the bottom or to the wall of the tank.

The mixer can’t be angled when the guide bar is equipped with an intermediate support.

Installation, Flange Mounted Mixer

Flange Mounted Mixer

Description The flange mounted mixer consists of:

• a mixer with fixing plate for flange mounting and
• a flange cover
The mixer is mounted to an adapter flange, which in turn is mounted in the tank inspection
hole opening.
The design of the mixer‘s fixing plate makes it possible to attach the mixer to the flange
cover.
The flange cover:
• has to be manufactured to fit each specific tank, with its particular flange.
• is calculated according to Swedish standard TKN87, a standard for pressure vessels.
The square tubes on the flange cover are made for forklift trucks for easy and fast
installation.

Illustration This illustration is an example of a flange mounted mixer.

51
Installation, PP – Installation

PP – Installation

Description Instead of an ordinary pump a Propeller Pump (PP) is an alternative when moving very
large volumes of fluid over short distances.
With a PPinstallation the fluid may be transferred through the wall of a basin instead
of up and over.
The guide bars and tube can be ordered from a local ITT Flygt office or representative.

Illustration This is an illustration of a PPinstallation.
