Paragis (Eleusine indica) as Anti-Dandruff Bar Shampoo 1

Background of the Study

Nowadays, organic products are major trendsetters of our lifestyle from skincare down to

the different aspects of aesthecism, still shampoos are considered to be a common household

necessity. Yet the struggle for bringing bulky shampoo bottles are still common problem

concerning also the use of less plastic bottles on products.

Dandruff characterized as a hyperproliferation of the scalp epidermis accompanied with

scalp itching and redness (Sharifi-Rad, 2015) Most commercial brands offer Anti-Dandruff

properties that are evident for hair growth.

Paragis (Eleusin indica) commonly known as “Goose Grass”, “Dog’s Tail” and “Wire

Grass” are generic plants that are found everywhere. This plant is known for many benefits most

especially it’s capability of reducing dandruff. It can also stop hair fall and help your hair back to

it’s original thickness.

This study is created since one out of five people have dandruff (Kukwas, 2007) and they

do the same way of treating it, considering also the characteristics of Paragis that could be

feasible to cure dandruff that motivated the researchers to conduct the study.

Statement of the Objective

This study was created to determine the paragis (eleusine indica) as anti-dandruff bar

shampoo. 2 out of 10 people experience dandruff especially men and to people who lives at

tropical countries. This research study will examine the feasibility of Paragis as anti-dandruff bar

shampoo.

Hypothesis

Ho: There is no significant difference between the effectiveness of Paragis (Eleusin

indica) as Anti-Dandruff Bar Shampoo compared to commercial shampoos in terms of: (a)

Physico – chemico Test (b) Hypoallergenic Test (c) General Acceptability Test

Conceptual Paradigm

Based on the research paradigm in figure 1 , the varying ratios of the paragis extract and

glycerin will be the Independent variables as 1:1 (125 mL: 125 mL), 1:2 (66.33mL: 183.67), 2:1

(183.67mL: 66.33mL)

In Addition, the Independent variables will be the method of testing to validate/ measure

its effectiveness in terms of: Physico-Chemical test, HypoAllergenic and General Acceptability

test.

Lastly, the extraneous variables will be the dimension and the size of the molder.

Significance of the Study

The result of the study will benefit the following:

 Market will have more opportunities to earn and to have additional options when

purchasing.

 Consumer

 Future Researchers

 Community e.g ( zero waste, cruelty free, etc. ) will support their advocacies as their

promote their lifestyle.

Scope and Delimitation

The scope of the study involves the time, tools/materials and techniques used and the

number of personnel needed for the experiment to be completed.

The estimated time range of the experiment to extract paragis for the final outcome of the

product ranges from a minimum time of 4 days depending on the quantity of the extract

(Maximum of 375 milliliters).

The equipments can be made from other recyclable materials which can be found on

homes. Tools needed for this experiment are source of flame (gas burners, charcoal stove,

burners, etc.)

The procedure of the experimentation will be conducted at Olongapo City National High

School ( OCNHS ), Science Laboratory where apparatus are readily available.

Incidental sampling will employed in order to comply students for the physicochemico,

hypoallergenic, and general acceptability test.

along riverbanks, roadways and other settled areas

throughout the country. It is an annual grass which measures anywhere from 10cm at a meter in

height with leaves that are from 10 to 30cm long; Previous Researchers have stated that the plant

is considered as a diuretic as well as antihelmenthic, anti inflammatory and antioxidants. The

whole can be used for medicine - its roots can be eaten raw, the leaves and the stems can become

the basis for a decoction and the seeds can also be eaten and use for other mixture as well. It is a

rather versatile plant which other cultures have used as an answer to various simple problems.

Hypo-allergenic is having a decreased tendency to provoke an allergic reaction.

Companies for many years have been reducing products which claim are “hypoallergenic” or

“safe for sensitive skin” or “allergy tested”.
