CONNECTION TYPE: JOIST (END PLATE SHEAR CONNECTION)-MEMBER: 249

AS PER AISC 2005 /J3.3b: CHAPTER J:

COMBINED TENSION AND SHEAR IN BEARING TYPE CONNECTIONS

Fnt'= 1.3*Fnt-(Ω*Fnt/Fnv)*fv≤Fnt (Allowable Stress Design)

Fnt' = Nominal tensile stress modified to include the effect of shear stress (MPa)
Fnt= Nominal tensile stress as Table J3.2(MPa)
Fv= Nominal shear stress as Table J3.2(MPa)
fv= Required shear stress
Ω = Safety Factor = 2 (ASD)

ANLYSIS RESULTS
1 SHEAR FORCE( DL+SL+L) = 89 KN
2 AXIAL FORCE = 35 KN

Values from the Table J:3.2: A325

3 Fnt = 620 MPa

4 Fv = 330 MPa
5 fv = Fv/2 = 165 MPa

6 Fnt'= 1.3*620-(2*620/330)*165 = 186 MPa

7 Fnt'(unfactored) = 186/Ω = 93 MPa
STRENGTH OF BOLT SHEAR
8 Dia of bolt(D)- assumed = 20 mm
9 Area of bolt (Ab)=¶*D*D/4 = 314 sq.mm
10 Rn1 = Fnt'*Ab = 93*314/1000 = 29 KN

STRENGTH OF BOLT IN BEARING

11 Rn2 =2.4 d x t x Fu/Ω

12 Rn2 =(2.4 x20 x 16 x 344.7/2)/1000 = 133 KN

BOLT STRENGTH = min(Rn1, Rn2) = 29 KN

no of bols required = Total shear force/Bolt strength=89/29 = 4 nos

therefore provide 12 nos of 20 mm dia and 16 mm thick plate

12 Check the bolts in tension

13 Allowable tensile force in bolt = Ab*Fnt(unfactored) = 804x620/2 = 249.3 KN

14 Tensile force/bolt = Total force/no of bolts =35/12 = 3 KN

therefore Allowable force is greter than the actual force, hence the design is safe
