Question 1.
A group of particles is travelling in a magnetic field of unknown magnitude and direction. You
observe a proton in the field moving at 1.50 km s−1 in the +𝑥-direction experiences a force of
2.25 × 10−16 N in the +𝑦-direction, and an electron also in the field moving at 4.75 km s −1 in
the −𝑧-direction experiences a force of 8.50 × 10−16 N.
a) Determine the magnitude and direction of the magnetic field.
b) Determine the magnitude and direction of the magnetic force on an electron moving in
the −𝑦-direction at 3.20 km s−1.

Question 2.
A circular area with a radius of 6.50 cm lies in the 𝑥𝑦-plane. Determine the magnitude of the
magnetic flux through this circle due to a uniform magnetic field 𝐵 = 0.23 T
a) at an angle of 53.1o from the +𝑧-direction.
b) in the +𝑦-direction.

Question 3.
A particle with charge 6.40 × 10−19 C travels in a circular orbit with radius 4.68 mm due to the
force exerted on it by a magnetic field with magnitude 1.65 T and perpendicular to the orbit.
Calculate the magnitude of the linear momentum 𝑝⃗ of the particle.

Question 4.
An alpha particle of mass 6.64 × 10−27 kg travelling horizontally at 35.6 km s −1 enters a
uniform, vertical, 1.10 T magnetic field.
a) Calculate the magnitude and direction of the acceleration of the alpha particle while it is
in the magnetic field.
b) Explain the effect that the magnetic field has on the velocity of the particle?

Question 5.
In the Bainbridge mass spectrometer (refer to figure in University Physics with Modern Physics),
the magnetic-field magnitude in the velocity selector is 0.65 T, and ions having a speed of
1.82 × 106 m s −1 pass through undeflected.
a) Calculate the electric-field magnitude in the velocity selector.
b) If the separation of the plates in the spectrometer is 5.20 mm, what is the potential
difference between them?
Question 6.
A straight, vertical wire carries a current of 1.20 A downward in a region between the poles of a
large superconducting electromagnet, where the magnetic field has magnitude 𝐵 = 0.588 T and
is horizontal. Calculate the magnitude and direction of the magnetic force on a 1.00 cm section
of the wire that is in this uniform magnetic field, if the magnetic field direction is 30.0o south of
west.

Question 7.
The plane of a 5.0 cm × 8.0 cm rectangular loop of wire is parallel to a 0.19 T magnetic field. The
loop carries a current of 6.2 A.
a) Calculate the torque that acts on the loop.
b) Calculate the magnetic moment of the loop.

Question 8.
A coil with magnetic moment 1.45 A m2 is oriented initially with its magnetic moment antiparallel
to a uniform 0.835 T magnetic field. Calculate the change in potential energy of the coil when it
is oriented 180o so that its magnetic moment is parallel to the field.

Question 9.
A +6.00 μC point charge is moving at a constant speed of 8.0 × 106 m s−1 in the +𝑦-direction,
relative to a reference frame. At the instant when the point charge is at the origin of this reference
frame, what is the magnetic field vector 𝐵 ⃗⃗ it produces at the point 𝑥 = 0, 𝑦 = −0.5 m, 𝑧 =
+0.5 m?

Question 10.
A long, straight wire lies along the 𝑧-axis and carries a 4.00 A current in the +𝑧-direction.
Calculate the magnetic field (magnitude and direction) produced at the point 𝑥 = 2.00 m,
𝑦 = 2.00 m, 𝑧 = 0 m by a 0.500 mm segment of the wire centred at the origin.

Question 11.
A very long, straight horizontal wire carries a current such that 3.50 × 1018 electrons per second
pass any given point going from west to east. What are the magnitude and direction of the magnetic
field this wire produces at a point 4.00 cm directly above it?

Question 12.
Two long, parallel wires are separated by a distance of 2.50 cm. The force per unit length that each
wire exerts on the other is 4.00 × 10−5 N m−1 , and the wires repel each other. The current in one
wire is 0.600 A.
a) What is the current in the second wire?
b) What is the direction of the two currents relative to each other?
