Roadmap
How to overcome the
3 most common ministry
obstacles
By Dr. Keith E. Webb, PCC
Is there a bottleneck in your ministry?
Well, you’re not alone. These are the three most common obstacles we face
in ministry.
Your first instinct is to try harder. You try and recruit other leaders to join you.
You resign yourself “to do more with less.”
But soon the constant overwhelm takes its toll, producing weariness and
burnout...
If you don’t approach ministry in new ways, you’ll never reach your full
potential. I don’t want that for you.
If you want to increase your ministry’s impact-- it begins with YOU changing.

MEET TIM LEE
I met Pastor Tim Lee several years ago.
He was leading a church through a merger with another church and still
trying to “pastor” individuals. But it had become more work than he could
keep up with.
It didn’t add to his busy schedule or workload. It simply changed the way he
invested in people. It solved Tim’s problem and it can help you.
You picked up this eBook because you’re a leader. You may be a leader in
a ministry organization or a pastor or a Christian business person. Using
coaching processes and skills will help you lead more effectively.

Coaching isn’t a new program or activity in your calendar. You’ll still meet with
people, but change the way you approach those conversations.
Just Imagine…
Imagine if leaders, time, and money were not issues in your ministry.
Imagine if you had plenty of leaders - growing and learning while
ministering.
Imagine the ministry impact you and these people could have.
1. Get Trained.
2. Coach Others.
3. Make An Impact.
1 Get TrAINED
Coaching is a skill set first and foremost. It is an intentional way of leading.
We’ve all heard the saying, “Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a
day. Teach a man to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime.” In the same way
coaching teaches people how to solve problems and make decisions without
being told what to do.
4
Adults learn best through dialogue. Good questions cause people to dig
deep in their souls to find answers. Advice-giving can short-circuit that
“discovery” process. A leader with coaching skills uses questions instead of
advice.
Listen.
Ask powerful questions.
Provide helpful feedback.
Design action steps that will be accomplished.
Follow-up to increase accountability.
You can’t learn to coach from watching a video, reading a book, listening
to a webinar, working through an online course, or sitting in an auditorium
with 200 others. Written or recorded material can serve to supplement live
training, but it will never replace it.
5
You need coaching training that is “voice-to-voice,” meaning the instructor
and participant are able to interact.
In my coaching training I work for a time balance of 1/3 information from the
instructor, 1/3 interaction among the participants discussing and reflecting,
and 1/3 practicing the skills. The last third is the most difficult to design and
incorporate into a workshop, but it provides the biggest impact on learning.
Some skills like programming or knitting can be learned on your own, but
coaching needs to be learned hands-on with people.
If you practice the wrong things, practicing 100 hours of coaching is worse
than not practicing at all.

2 CoaCH OTHERS
The test for every leader comes when you take your coaching skills back to the
real world.
When Tim returned home from the Coaching Mastery Certificate Program and
started using coaching skills, he learned something powerful.
“My job has shifted from being the pastor with all the answers, to coaching
them to hear what the Holy Spirit is saying them. This a subtle shift but has
produced tremendous results in those I minister to.”
“I feel a new freedom to not know what the outcome might be. The model of
simply asking penetrating questions has helped me enormously. I am letting
the power of questions do the work. Coaching is about helping the other
person find their solution rather than directing them to mine.”
With every question you ask, you’ll go deeper, helping them discern what God is
calling them to do.
Once they discern what they need to do, you’ll help them get clear about
what their next action is. You’ll help them design action steps and build the
accountability they need to accomplish those steps.
Notice, they figure it out, they set their own action steps, and they take the
responsibility. It’s about them, not you.
7
3 MAKE AN IMPACT.
Finally, after you get trained and begin coaching others in your ministry, you’ll
see your impact increase.
Tim Lee has seen this impact first hand in his ministry.
Ray Van Gilst, a District Superintendent for Christian & Missionary Alliance,
described how coaching changed his organization.
“On our retreats, I’m a better listener now. I am asking questions because
I want the team’s input and they KNOW it. Our meetings are safe and
interactive... and never boring. Coaching has given me the tools to coach
pastors in my district and train them in coaching others.
It’s helped us to develop a team mentality. It’s brought a new kind of capacity
for ministry to our pastors. It’s helped us get over barriers to growth. We
are seeing a shift emerge in our organizational culture as more people are
trained in coaching skills.”

MINISTRY LEADERS ON
THE COACHING MASTERY CERTIFICATE PROGRAM
Rich Hansen
Author of Paradox Lost: Rediscovering the Mystery of God
“The training was exactly what I was looking for. I immediately began to coach
people in my church and community. Later, I breezed through the application
process and was awarded Associate Certified Coach by the International Coach
Federation.”
“The program has given me the tools to lead in a new way. It’s quickly changing
the way I interact with the leaders that I supervise, empowering them to discover
their own strategy to meet goals. And it has also given me the skills to be able to
coach fundraising with a variety of global leaders.”
Regina Bergeron
Sr. VP of Global Generosity, Operation Mobilization

THE COACHING MASTERY CERTIFICATE PROGRAM
When you add up the costs that other Christian organizations charge for coach
training and mentor coaching, it can range from $3,650 to $5,100. Some of these
courses are not “live” nor approved by the ICF.
Need to raise the money? Download a sample fundraising letter to adapt and
send to your donors. Many others have done this successfully.
