ver the last two years, we’ve
seen a big change when it comes
to rebuilding the Jatco CVT. It
used to be hard to find the parts needed
for rebuilding this transmission; that’s
no longer the case.
One other issue we’ve seen is that
the dealer reman transmissions have
been failing and many of the warranty
claims get denied by Nissan.
If you go with a dealer reman,
make sure you have the unit programmed
(recommend by Nissan) and use the OE
fluid. Keep all records of this for your
warranty, as it may be necessary for
warranty claims. If you don’t have those
records, there’s a good chance Nissan
will deny any warranty claims.
Some of the common issues with
this transmission are pressure and
performance codes, and surging and
flaring as the transmission goes from
low to high range.
You can rebuild this transmission
and make good money doing it. There
are some basic areas to cover to make a
quality repair along with performing

some of the more important points, to
make this transmission repair a simple

aftermarket scan tools have very

the relearn step.
For the best possible service,
you need to make sure you have
the latest updated programming
installed in the computer. But
reprogramming the computer
doesn’t mean the resets are done.
Some of the resets must be
done with the scan tool, such as
the G-sensor calibration, CVT
fluid deterioration, throttle body
calibration, engine brake adjusts,
and steering alignment (some
makes and models vary). Always
check the factory service informa-
tion to make sure you’re resetting
the system properly.
On some models, you can run

or by performing a manual reset,
as explained in the factory service
information. This allows the ECM
and TCM to reset and learn to talk
to each other and start with new
calibration data. Then the trans-
mission can start learning.
But wait! Here’s one of the
most important relearn procedures
to save for the end. Clutch Point

fter a certain number of years in the industry, you might
think you’d have heard everything. That’s usually when you
get the call that lets you know, you haven’t. From ignition
coils failing causing no-communication codes, to Chrysler governor
systems that won’t function properly due to oxygen sensors being
shorted out, they just keep on coming. Here’s one you’ve probably
never heard of:
Tanner Bennet from All Transmission World called the HotLine
the other day about a 2010 Kia Sportage. It came into their shop with
range sensor code, P0708, and the selector displayed reverse in all
ranges.
The customer had already taken it to another shop. They went over
the vehicle and replaced the range sensor with an aftermarket part. No
change.
Tanner’s crew installed an OE range sensor; still no good. So they
proceeded to diagnose the problem from scratch. Here’s a list of the
possible causes according to the factory diagnostic procedure:
• range switch
• ML cable adjustment Figure 2

away. In fact, this type of transmission
is preferred for high-end, high-perfor-

For argument’s sake, consider
this an entry-level unit. It’s a direct-
shift gearbox (DSG) consisting of a
dual, dry-disc clutch assembly, fully
controlled by an external transmission
control module (TCM). Bill Brayton
wrote an article on the inner operation
of this unit in the June 2014 edition of
GEARS.
For reference purposes, Ford also
refers to this unit as the powershift
transmission. Borg Warner, the
manufacturer, designates it as the
6DCT-250.
These transmissions are becoming
more abundant in the U.S. and other
markets. Since they operate differently
than any conventional automatic
transmission, they have a unique feel
and function. That being said, let’s take
a real-world look at the DPS6. Figure 1: The Clutch Actuator motors are very accessible and identical. Note the positions

The Automotive Power Pusher® is a battery
powered, heavy duty, multi-use device
designed to move immobilized vehicles up to
18,000 lbs. up a 5% grade with only two
people, instead of five or six that are
normally required to move them. The Power
Pusher’s low maintenance and durability
are just two of its many features. The Power
Pusher moves equipment more efficiently and helps to
reduce the risk of injury. It is the most practical tool a service
department or fleet can employ. The Power Pusher is not just
an extra piece of equipment, it’s a working member of your team. Our
customers tell us it’s an absolute necessity and the Power Pusher is easily
maintained.
