On January 30, 2013, the House Bill no. 6643 was finally passed by the
Senate and the House of Representatives. On May 15, 2013, the said Bill was
approved and signed by the former President of the Philippines, Benigno Simeon
C. Aquino III. Today that law is fully implemented and is known as RA 10533
otherwise known as the Enhanced Basic Education Act of 2013 or K-12 Program
which aims to enhance the Philippine Education System by increasing the number
of years for the basic education.
With the help of the K-12 program activities, students are more job ready.
They have a deeper understanding of topics presented in and out of their
classrooms. They are able to use their learning in real life situations and have
better confidence. According to the survey that I have conducted where I asked
ten grade 6 students from Marychild Academy, a private school in Meycauayan
Bulacan, with the age bracket of 11-13 years of age about their feedback
regarding the K-12 learning activities, 9 out of 10 students agreed that the K-12
learning activities helped them mentally, physically and spiritually. They think that
because of these activities they have become more mature and smarter. They
said that they also grew as individuals that are more aware of various situations
with their lives. Pertaining to the second question that I have asked, 8 out of 10
students said that they are in favor of doing group activities rather than doing it
individually. Their reasons are when doing group activities advanced learners are
able to help those who are having some difficulties. They can also develop
camaraderie, patience and cooperation. Still, some aren’t in favor of doing group
activities for the reason that some students are not cooperative and it leads to
failure and unfinished tasks. Lastly, when asked what activities they preferred
most, 10 out of 10 answered that they like a performance based task where they
can boost their self confidence and be able to express yourself more. It is also one
way to showcase their talents and enhance your creativity.
In this research, I also conduction surveys for the parents who have
child/children that are studying as grade 6 students, 10 out of 10 parents said that
they are helping their child with activities that are taken home. Aside from
monitoring their child, these activities give them more time to bond and they will
have more time to assess their child’s improvement. They also noticed a big
difference between the activities today and the activities from the Basic
Education Curriculum. Since activities in the K-12 program requires a lot of
involvement of the student.
