Chapter I
The Problem and Its Background

I. Introduction

Cellphone or Mobile Phone is a portable telephone that is used to make and receive
calls.There is also a class of mobile phones called Smartphones. Smartphone is a mobile phone
with more advanced features like touch screens display, Wi-Fi, internet, etc... Mobile phones lets
us access social media and internet. It also used by people to play games like mobile legends that
is trending worldwide.

We can easily get tons of information on the Internet through the World Wide
Web(WWW). WWW consists of millions of webpages that access us to the provided information
we needed while social media makes you share stuffs and be updated because it is an
application that enables users to create and share content or to participate social networking.
With the highly increasing number of cellphones, almost every person have a cellphone of their
own because of its significance for communication and gathering information. Almost every
person uses social media and internet through gadgets especially through mobile phones. In
these days most of students use internet and social media commonly for their communications,
homework, research, projects and studies.

In other words mobile phones already became essential part in the way of
implementing education making learning more convenient and efficient for new generations of
students. Despite of how the mobile phones is useful to the lives of the students/how big the
help of mobile phones to the studies of the students, it has also negative effects to their daily
lives most especially to their health.

This research aims to let the school be conscious to the health of the students. On the
other hand, this research also aims to inform and make the people aware especially the students

as well as their parents and teachers on what are the effects of mobile phones to our lives and
how does it affect our body. This research also aims to make the students reduce their time
using mobile phones and provoke parents to watch ang guide their children while they’re using
mobile phones.

II. Statement of the Problem

1.What are the effects of excessive use of mobile phones to the health of the students?

2.How mobile phones affects the student's behavior and interaction?

3.How does mobile phone help students with their school works?

III. Significance of the Study

The significance of this study to students is for them to know how to manage their
time in using mobile phones so they can prevent from being addicted to it.

For students, this can inform them about the benefits and the bad consequences of
using mobile phones.

For parents, this will also be a guide to teach their children to control the excessive
usage of mobile phones.

To the teachers this will help them to understand that mobile phones can also be
used for educational purposes and not just for entertainment. For the school . This will make the
school aware of how mobile phones affects the student mostly to their study and to their health

For the future researchers - This will be a guide to help them to their research that is
related to our topic. This will be also a proof of how the mobile phones affects the students
through generations
IV. Scopes and Delimitations

The scope of this study was to determine the effect of mobile phone to students studying habits.
It was limited to junior high school students ofParada National High School which is composed of
students from 7th Grade to 10th Grade students.

V. Definitions of Terms

*Mobile Phones- A mobile phone, cell phone, cellphone, or hand phone, sometimes shortened
to simply mobile, cell or just phone, is a portable telephone that can make and receive calls over
a radio frequency link while the user is moving within a telephone service area.

*Internet- The Internet (contraction of interconnected network) is the global system of


interconnected computer networks that use the Internet protocol suite (TCP/IP) to link devices
worldwide.

*WWW- The World Wide Web, also known as the WWW and the Web, is an information
space where documents and other web resources are identified by Uniform Resource
Locators (URLs), interlinked by hypertext links, and accessible via the Internet.

*Social Media- are interactive computer-mediated technologies that facilitate the creation and
sharing of information, ideas, career interests and other forms of expression via virtual
communities and networks

*Cordless telephone or portable telephone is a telephone in which the handset is portable


and communicates with the body of the phone by radio, instead of being attached by a cord.

*Wi-Fi- a facility allowing computers, smartphones, or other devices to connect to the Internet
or communicate with one another wirelessly within a particular area.

*Web Page-a hypertext document connected to the World Wide Web.

*Gadgets- is a small tool such as a machine that has a particular function, but is often
thought of as a novelty.[1] Gadgets are sometimes referred to as gizmos.

*Social Networking- the use of dedicated websites and applications to interact with other
users, or to find people with similar interests to oneself.

*Mobile Application- a mobile application, most commonly referred to as an app, is a type


of application software designed to run on a mobile device, such as smartphone or tablet
computer.

Chapter II

Review of Related Literature

I. Literature Review

A. Local

Filipinos are using their mobile phones not only to communicate but also as mobile
computers as well, according to a recent market study issued Tuesday .TNS, a global customized
research company, said in its report that Filipino consumers are not just using cell phones to call
and texting messages and photos, but also as a means to have "internet- on-the-go," allowing
users to be always online. Of the 38,000 respondents in Metro Manila, 75 percent of
therespondents surveyed used mobile phones to take photos or videos; 45 percent to browse
the internet; 44 percent to access their social networking sites; and 37 percent to check their
emails.The study was conducted from November 2012 to January 2013. "Based on the findings
of the study, the increase in various mobile activities explain the growing trend of Wi-Fi
accessibility in public areas," said TNS Philippines Managing Director Gary de Ocampo.

About 35 percent of Metro Manila respondents connect to the internet via Wi-Fi access
in public areas in 2013. The study also showed that Filipino consumers changed their purchasing
priorities from buying phones based on physical features to choosing a phone that will enhance
personal experience. Smartphone usage in the Philippine is now at 53 percent compared to
overall mobile phone usage of 89 percent. The study identified five growth potential for increase

mobile usage video calling, Wi-Fi at home, watching live TV shows, blogging and streaming video
like You Tube.The sale of smartphone in the Philippine market is seen to increase significantly in
the next few years as prices go down. The TNS study also revealed that most Filipinos living in
Metro Manila own "multiple screens" or more than just one device. A typical household owns at
least four of the following devices : a mobile phone (89 percent), smartphone (53 percent),
tablet (14 percent), desktop (39 percent), laptop/netbooks (37 percent) and smart TV (4
percent.)

B.Foreign
According to [ (Miller, 2013) ], a mobile phone is a wireless electronic device used for
telephone and multimedia communications. Which means people can bring it and
cancommunicate anywhere at anytime. [ (Singh, 2011) ] said that communication is the process
to express his thoughts, ideas, and messages, from one person to other person for the sake of

ages 13 to 17 ends the highest number of text messaging, sending and receiving an average of

communication to gain social status and use their social networks in a task-oriented manner (2).
Face-to-face communication differences between genders and has been shown to cross over
into e-mail and computer-mediated communication makes women communicate more
thoroughly because of the lack of nonverbal cues

[ (Amanda Lenhart, 2010) ]One major influence has to do with the economics of the cell
phone – who pays for the costs associated with the cell phone and its use and what are the
limitations on the service plan for the phone? Does the user have unlimited minutes to talk or
the ability to share minutes? Does he or she have an unlimited or pay-as-you-go text messaging
plan? And regardless of who pays, what type of plan does the teen have? A shared family plan,
an individual plan with a contract, or a contract-less pre-paid phone?

their mobile phones. [ (Amanda Lenhart, 2010) ] About one in five teen cell phone users (18%)
are part of a prepaid or pay-as-you-go plan, and just one in ten (10%) have their own individual
contract. The type of cell phone plan a teen has is significantly related to household income.
Teens from lower income households are more likely to use prepaid plans or to have their own
contract, while teen cell phone users in households with incomes of $50,000 or greater are most
likely to be part of a family plan. Local [ (Celdran, 2002) ] declared that the characteristics of
connectivity, speed, cost effectiveness, mobility and confidentiality of text messaging and its
adaptability to Filipino culture has made SMS the most popular form of private communication
technology in the country.

Chapter III

Methologody

A. Research Design
The researchers first used a pre-survey question to determine the effects of mobile
phones to the Junior High School students of Parada National High School. After
identifying the respondents who uses mobile phones. We handed them a questionnaire
to gather our data

B. Research Locale

Descriptive research is defined as a research method it is used to describe


characteristics of a population or phenomenon being studied. The researchers used the
Junior students from Parada National High School S.Y. 2018-2019

C. Research Instruments
The instruments that the researchers used was a questionnaire that the
researchers made to collect the needed data. The draft of the questionnaire was drawnout
based on the researchers readings, opinions, experiences, previous stories and literature
relevant to the study. The manipulated questionnaires consisted of two parts:First part consists
of the questions about the profile of the respondents; their name, age, sex, grade and section.
The second part of the questions are related to the researcher.

Presentation and Analysis and Interpretation of Data

The figure shows that out of ninety (90)


respondents from junior high school students in
Parada National High School, fifty-three percent
(53%) are strongly agreed that they can easily
contact other people especially their families in
case of emergencies. Forty-two percent (42%)
agreed, five percent (5%) disagreed, zero
percent (0%) strongly disagreed.

The figure shows that out of ninety (90)


respondents from junior high school students in
Parada National High School, twenty-five percent
(25%) are strongly agreed that Mobile Phones
helps them to improve their knowledge, sixty-
three percent (63%) agreed, eleven percent
(11%) disagreed, one percent(1%) strongly disagreed.

The figure shows that out of ninety (90) respondents


from junior high school students in Parada National High School,
eighteen percent (18%) strongly agreed that they are always
updated with the latest happenings in their surroundings
through their phones, sixty-two percent (62%) agreed, twenty
percent (20%) disagreed, zero percent (0%) strongly disagreed.

The figure shows that out of ninety (90) respondents from


junior high school students in Parada National High School,
twenty percent (20%) strongly agreed that their time is greatly
consumed by using mobile phones in playing games and other
things.Thirty-nine percent (39%) agreed, Thirty-seven percent
(37%) disagreed, four percent (4%) strongly disagreed.

The figure shows that out of ninety (90) respondents


from junior high school students in Parada National High
School, twenty-one percent (21%) strongly agreed that they
always communicate through their mobile phones rather
than to talk to someone in person, forty-four percent (44%)
agreed, thirty-three percent (33%) disagreed, three percent (3%) strongly disagreed.

high school students in Parada National High School,
Twenty-one percent (21%) strongly agreed that they can read or
watch things that children/teenagers musn’t know because of
mobile phones, forty-seven percent (47%) agreed, twenty-seven
percent (27%) disagreed, two percent (2%) strongly disagreed.

The figure shows that out of ninety (90) respondents from junior
high school students in Parada National High School,
Twenty percent (20%) strongly agreed that they always
experience difficulty in sleeping because they use mobile phone,
forty- one percent (41%) agreed, thirty percent (30%) disagreed,
nine percent (9%) strongly disagreed.

The figure shows that out of ninety (90)


respondents from junior high school students in Parada National
High School,Nine percent (9%) strongly agreed that mobile
phones makes them distracted during class hours, thirty-six
percent (36%) agreed, thirty-nine percent (39%) disagreed,
seventeen percent (17%) strongly disagreed.

strongly agreed that they feel ill sometimes when
they use mobile phones. Forty-four percent
(44%) agreed, thirty-nine percent (39%)
disagreed, ten percent (10%) strongly disagreed.

Chapter V

Summary, Conclusion and Recommendations

This chapter presents the summary of the purpose, methodology, and the results of this study.

This study provides the research work undertaken the conclusion drawn and the
recomendations made as an outgrowth of this taken. The purpose of this study is to determine
the effects of mobile phones to the performance and behavior of junior high school students of
Parada National High School.

I. Summary
The purpose of this study is to determine how mobile phone affects the
school performance and behavior of students. To accomplish this, it is necessary to
reach certain requirements needed in determining the junior high school students in
Parada National High School from school year 2018-2019 who used mobile phone
thoroughly. Related to that it became necessary to reach an understanding about The
of mobile phones to students in school.

The researcher provide a questionnaire for junior high school students.


Once this fundamental steps are achieve this research we go forward. This chapter
reports the conclusion and recommendation that resulted from this study.

We have 90 junior high school as are respondents. As the results of this


survey, mostly of our respondents used mobile phones for their educational purposes
and entertainment

II. Conclusion

1. This research is conducted for the purpose of determining the effects of mobile
phones to junior high school students performance and behavior. Based on the result
of the data we can conclude that majority of the junior high school students of
Parada National High School became too much dependent to mobile phones in
mostly everything they do.

2. According to the interpreted data from the questionnaire that sixty-three


percent (63% ) of our respondents find that mobile phones are very helpful in
improving their knowledge, therefore we can conclude from this that mobile phones
are very useful for students for learning and discovering a lot of informations.

3. Furthermore, mobile phones has a positive and negative effects on the


performance and behavior of the students. The positive effects of mobile phones to
students is that they help students to learn much more easier and doing school works
became much less difficult. While the negative effects , are related to social, mental
and physical state of the students, they lack sleep, they felt ill , they became
distracted in classes and they evade actual social conversations.

III. Recommendation
1. 1. Teachers should prohibit the use of mobile phones during class when it is not
neccesary.
2. Parents should guide and observe their children on using mobile phones
3. Students should learn how to use mobile phones with discipline and appropriate
time management.
4. The School should educate the students on the proper use of mobile phones and
give them awareness to the effects so they can use mobile phones responsibly.
