Desiccant Vessel
800-V-11 & 800-V-12
1. OBJECTIVE
Fatigue analysis of desiccant vessel for cyclic pressure cycle as per ASME SEC VIII
DIV-2 Part 5.
2. DESIGN DATA
Analysis Code ASME, Section VIII, Div-1 Ed. 2015
Design Temperature 90°C
Corr. Allowance 3.0 mm
Cyclic Loading Conditions
Pressure Cycle is as under:
3. ANALYSIS DETAILS
Details of the stress analysis are described in this section. A general-purpose finite
element analysis software “ANSYS Ver.15.0” was used for the analysis.
3.1 Model
• All degree of freedom at leg bottom are fixed for all cases.
• Design internal pressure is applied at the inner surface of the shell and the
nozzles.
• Equivalent thrust force is applied at the free end of nozzles.
• External forces and moments are considered as per table below:
Load Unit
FA kgf 950
FC kgf 714
FL kgf 950
MT kgf-m 470
ML kgf-m 410
MC kgf-m 317
• Figure 3.2a to Figure 3.2b shows applied load and boundary conditions.
Following material from ASME Sec.II Part-D are used at design temperature 90°C.
Elastic Modulus [MPa] :195GPa
Poisson’s Ratio : 0.3

3.5 Results and Evaluations
• Fig. 3.5a and 3.5b shows stress distribution for time 1 and time 2 respectively.
• All stress plot show stress in MPa.
• Fig. 3.5c and 3.5d shows stress linearization points for fatigue life calculation.
• Fig. 3.5e and 3.5f shows linearized stress across section AA at Time-1 and
time 2 respectively.
• Fig. 3.5g and 3.5h shows linearized stress across section BB at Time-1 and
time 2 respectively.
• Fatigue analysis is performed using ASME Sec.VIII Div.2 Part 5 and ASME
Sec. VIII Div.2 ANNEX 3F Fatigue life calculation for the peak stress nodes.
• Vessel is pressurized from atmospheric to 6kg/cm2 in 5 mins and 6kg/cm2 to
8kg/cm2 in next 5 mins. The cycle continue for 24hrs, 365 days 20 years.
• Hence number of cycles = 6 cycles per hr. = 6 x 24 x 365 x 20 = 1051200
cycles
• Fatigue calculation at point A and point B is in the Appendix I
4. CONCLUSION
Fatigue calculation is performed for the desiccant vessel subject to pressure cycles.
From the analysis, it is confirmed that the fatigue life of the vessel is more than the
required number of cycles. Hence it is concluded that the desiccant vessel is safe
under given cyclic pressure loads.
