1. INTRODUCTION
This document is intended to cover basic design data and minimum technical
requirements for Cooling Tower basin (801-TK-01).
Section-2: Intake basin downstream of sluice gate valve including pump suction bay.
Section-1: Section of cooling tower up to the sluice gate valves and wall shall be
designed by the cooling tower vendor. Section-1 will be divided into compartments
corresponding to the number of Cooling Tower Cells. Sluice gate valves will be provided
for each section in order to be able to isolate it without shutting down the whole system.
Access to each compartment for maintenance shall be provided. Each cell shall be
provided with 4" connections in the bottom of the Basin wall at the lower side of the
Basin to enable sludge removal.
Section-2: The Basin and pump suction bays shall be designed in line with the
requirements of the Hydraulic Institute to prevent vortex formation and cavitation. Two
pump suction bays shall be provided, connected to each compartment via a channel
with sluice gates. The inlet to pump suction bays shall be fitted with trash screen.
Arrangement for removing of trash screen is to be provided. Trash screens shall be
designed and supplied by cooling tower vendor. Each suction bay will be provided with
arrangement for manual cleaning of sludge.
Water make up shall be Raw Water, delivered under level control into the channel.
Chemicals shall be dosed in the channel at a location designed to provide adequate
time for mixing whilst avoiding the overflow. Separate pump suctions shall be provided

for each pump, the inlet ends being turned downwards and ending in a bell mouth to
minimize vortex formation in the suction lines. Water average velocity at the entry of the
bell mouth shall not exceed 1.7 m/s and the clearance at the bottom of suction bay shall
not be less than half the diameter of the bell mouth.
Screens: 1 per pump suction bay shall be designed and supplied by cooling tower
vendor.

Note (1): Design of wall between Cooling Tower cell and Cooling tower basin shall be such
that overflow of cooling tower cell will be towards Cooling Tower common basin.
(2): Slope angle will be less than or equal 10 °. This will be confirmed after CFD analysis.

3. SCOPE OF SUPPLY
The scope of supply of some of the items identified along with the cooling tower
basin will be as follows:
Trash Screens: These will be supplied by the cooling tower vendor along with the
necessary mechanism needed for taking it out for maintenance.
Sluice gates: These will be supplied at each section of the cooling tower unit for
individual isolation of cooling tower section without complete isolation.
Bellmouth: This will be supplied by the cooling water pumps vendor or by others.
Vortex breaker: requirement will be confirmed after CFD analysis.
4. HOLDS
1. Width shall be confirmed after receiving vendor data of cooling tower.
