STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

My purpose in applying for doctoral program in Electrical Engineering at University at Buffalo is to be an

eminent researcher and educator in the fields of my research interests like Nano-Electronics, Optical fiber
and Photonics. Department of Electrical Engineering of UB provides world class research opportunities in
the fields of my research interests, distinguished faculty members and modern academic curriculum
which encouraged me to choose this prominent university for graduate study.

At the very beginning of my childhood, I used to notice inquisitively that at the flick of a switch, the
magical power of electricity turns on all the home appliances in our house. The necessity of this magical
power seems more prominent when all these appliances stop functioning during load-shedding. This
magical phenomenon made me curious about electric power. My father who is an electrical engineer and
works in Power Distribution Sector having theoretical and practical knowledge on electric power
generation and distribution gave me a brief description about those terms. At that time I did not have any
deep knowledge about electricity but was surprised about the power of electricity. I realized that
electricity is the greatest invention of mankind that provides us with all modern amenities and comfort in
our life. In my juvenile age, I often read through my father’s electrical engineering books and those books
always intrigued me. Since then, I cherished a dream to develop myself as a skilled electrical engineer
and I tried to put my best effort to fulfill my dream. As recognition of my hard work, I achieved merit
based scholarship in every stage of my academic life. Afterward through a very competitive test, I got
admitted into department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at Rajshahi University of Engineering
and Technology (RUET) which is one of the best public universities for engineering study in Bangladesh.
So choosing to study Electrical and Electronic Engineering is not only a co-incident in my life rather a
thoughtful cherished decision of mine.

During my undergraduate career, I had a great predilection towards the Electrical and Electronics
Engineering related major courses like Electrical Machine, Electronic Circuit, Linear Circuit System,
Digital System and Design, Microprocessor and Microcontroller System, Industrial Electronics , Control
System, Electronic Circuit for Communication System, Communication Engineering, Microwave
Circuits, Fiber Optic Communication, Power station, Power Transmission and Distribution, Photovoltaic
System Design and so on. Not only I always attained the highest grade at those but also I was charmed
and intended to explore the diversity of the research field in those subjects. The immensity and practical
applicability of these fields had always been a source of curiosity and interest to me.

As I have a keen interest on the new technologies of the world, I decided to take my undergraduate thesis
on Nanotechnology which is an enriched field for research work with vast application in the sector of
Electronics, Sensors, Solar cell, Optical fiber, Thin film fabrication and so on. Though the
Nanotechnology and Photovoltaic Lab is very new and not so much furnished in our university, I had
enough confidence in myself to do the research work in this lab on Nanotechnology especially on Thin
Film Deposition. I worked on deposition of thin film by using thermal evaporation method and optical
characterization of the obtained thin films in the laboratory. At first, I established a modified thermal
evaporation setup as there was no such developed system in the laboratory and the cost of this thermal
evaporation setup is quite high in market. I successfully made it possible to lay out a simple structured
thermal evaporation setup and then started the work to deposit ZnO thin film on glass substrate by using

Zn dust only in the chamber. For obtaining ZnO thin film, I created vacuum space and maintained a
higher temperature approximately 800-900 ⁰C inside the deposition chamber. After the completion of this
thesis work, I realized that I can complete any difficult task with patience, persistence and confidence.

All these hard work and devotion to research groomed me with excellent academic result. I earned a
CGPA of 3.74 (in a scale of 4.00) in B.Sc. Engineering securing 16th position out of 120 students. I also
attended several national and international conferences, seminars and workshops during my university
life. I worked in an international conference paper and presented the paper titled “Effect of Deposition
time on Structural, Optical and Morphological properties of facing-target Sputtered TiO2 thin film” on
“International Conference on Electrical & Electronic Engineering (ICEEE 2015)” which is a great
experience of my life. This experience also inspired me for future research work.

Alongside with academic studies and research, I was at the forefront of extra-curricular and voluntary
activities in the university. I was a co-operative member of IEEE RUET student branch. I worked as a
volunteer in different program arranged by IEEE like ‘ETcell Weekend 2014’, National Conference on
Photonics and Nano Technology (NCPNT)-2014 etc. This is really important for any student to learn how
to be organized in group work which I have learnt by working as an IEEE member. I am also a good
singer and completed a four year course on music from Rangpur Musical Academy, Bangladesh. I have
performed in different cultural programs of university that made me popular in the university.

I have recently worked as an Intern in DESCO (Dhaka Electric Supply Company Limited), a public
limited company which distributes electricity at the northern parts of Dhaka city under the power division
of Bangladesh Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources. I feel proud to be chosen as one of the
fifty interns from thousands of engineers in power division. I have had the opportunity to receive practical
knowledge about power distribution, divisions related to power distribution and their operation. I have
also collected operational information and prepared a comprehensive report at the end of my internship.

My future target in life is to build a career in research and academia delivering engineering education to
the people of my country. It will be the best way to serve the society by providing people with more
accessible, economical and efficient technology. Performing research in my infatuated field of Electrical
Engineering in University of Buffalo can assist me to achieve that target for which I am eagerly looking
forward to. By carefully inspecting the research concentrations and the publications of prominent faculty
members I have found some research projects and fields which are aligned with my interest. Moreover,
research facilities like “Nano-Optics and Biophotonics Lab,” “Nanophotonics and Nonlinear Optics Lab”
and “High Frequency Electronics Lab” have made me believe that University at Buffalo is equipped with
all modern amenities required to produce top notch research work. On the other hand, my husband has
already got the admission offer for PhD program of the Industrial and System Engineering department of
UB and decided to enroll in fall’17 semester. I will also accompany him to buffalo so it will be
convenient for me to continue my graduate study if I get admission to the PhD program in Electrical
Engineering. With all my background academic knowledge and research experience, I hope to offer
myself as an eligible candidate for the PhD. program of the Electrical Engineering department at The
State University of New York at Buffalo.
