dimulai dari bukti bahwa jurusan mu dibutuhkan. Cara untuk membuktikannya adalah
dengan menunjukkan masalah apa yang dapat diselesaikan dengan jurusan kamu
nantinya. Jika kamu tidak menemukan masalah, kamu bisa membuktikan bahwa jurusan
mu tersebut penting dengan cara menunjukkan potensi apa yang ada di masyarakat yang
bisa kamu kembangkan dengan jurusan mu.

4. Relevansinya terhadap kebutuhan institusi asal maupun pembangunan nasional.

PROPOSAL OF STUDY

TESOL as it stands for Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages deals with
curriculum, pedagogy, language, and relevance of school systems to local and international and it
is also designed for people wishing to teach English as an additional language (EAL). TESOL is
aimed to produce qualified teachers and improve the employment prospects of teachers. On the
other hand, TESOL may improve the quality of English Language Teaching (ELT). Furthermore,
TESOL produces highly qualified teachers that they will have a great understanding about the
theory and practice of language teaching itself.
In line with English Language Teaching in Indonesia, it still becomes a big issue and
needs to be concerned. The quality of English teacher is one of the problems encountered
Indonesia for years particularly in the province I am living for, North Sumatera. Some villages
located in North Tapanuli Regency as the part of North Sumatera are still problematized with its
education sector especially in English Language Teaching. It was proven when I had my
undergraduate research in 2018. It was found that teachers did not have a good teaching method
for non-English speaking students and they always used students’ first language to deliver
material as long as teaching and learning run. Besides, teachers were unable to develop
curriculum that causes teaching becomes monotonously. It makes the quality of English
Language Teaching becomes low. Furthermore, as Indonesia is a country that holds English as a
foreign language, the use of English for students is still at classroom only. It is therefore difficult
for teachers and students to get used to speak English.
Based on the problems explained, TESOL is a necessary course that might assist to
decrease the problems. Indonesia needs young academics to come to help those conditions. This
course is one of the ways out to help teachers become more capable and qualified in teaching.
The importance of TESOL is providing students with professional training.
Dealing with my future career, I dream to be a lecturer, expertise of teaching. As I was a
student of English Educational Study Program, I had learned some theories and practices of
English Language Teaching. However, it is insufficient to have studied undergraduate only when
I want to be a high-qualified educator. If I were a TESOL graduated student, there are a lot of
benefits for me myself and the improvements of ELT in Indonesia. For instance, I will have a
good understanding of curriculum and pedagogy then it will lead me to develop curriculum in
the future. Furthermore, by choosing that proposed study, I will not only have a good mastery of
English language, but also a good understanding of methodological approaches, researches,
theories and professional practices, such as being able to understand the real practice of English
teaching for non-English speaking users.
In addition to, having TESOL graduate students will improve and enhance the prospects
of teacher in the future. They will be able to teach, empower and make different ways of
teaching students. Furthermore, TESOL also produces graduate students to be an eligible lecturer
and researcher of ELT.
Based on my strong consideration, I choose to apply Master of TESOL in the University
of Melbourne as my first preference, University College London (UCL) as the second preference
and the University of Hong Kong as the third one. Melbourne has an outstanding reputation and
it is ranked as the first place of education in Australia and UCL is ranked as the top ten
university for applying TESOL courses in the United Kingdom. The University of Hong Kong is
also renowned for its academic excellence and world class research. Thus, these three
universities are the right university to learn TESOL.
Studying in those outstanding universities will help me to cope with problems
encountered Indonesia especially in education sector. These universities will provide and guide
the students to solve problems with any experts and students come from around the world.
Having TESOL graduate students will not only develop the human development but also the
condition of education sector. For instance, ESOL teacher may provide a training to help
teachers to develop the Teaching-Learning process. Then, it can also bring the TESOL graduates
to be researcher to find out any solutions of ELT.
