CHAPTER I

The Problem and Its Background

This chapter presents the introduction, background of study, theoretical

framework, conceptual framework, hypothesis, statement of the problem, scope and

delimitation, significance of the study and the definition of terms used in the study by the

researchers.

Introduction

In todays generation, the continuous growth of the modern technology is

developing too fast. Because of technology new things were created. That made our life

easier, compostable and handy at the most of the time smart phone were created because

of technology. Due to the fast advancement of technology now a day s, students were

getting involved with to match playing online games with is the mobile legend

Mobile Legends very is arguably one of the most popular mobile games currently

being played. Online Games are the most trendy entertainment in the modern societies

and they target a diversity of people in different ages. Mobile Legends: is a multiplayer (5

vs 5) online battle arena game designed for mobile phones. The two opposing teams fight

to reach and destroy the enemy's base while defending their own base for control of a

path, the three "lanes" known as "top", "middle" and "bottom", which connects the bases.

Weaker computer-controlled characters, called "minions", spawn at team bases and

follow the three lanes to the opposite team's base, fighting enemies and turrets.

As the advent of online games occurs, students failed on their grade. They gave

more of their attention on playing online games rather than doing their school
responsibilities. They also don't have enough money to spend to their school works if

needed they spend it already in playing Mobile Legends. Thus, the research focuses on

how playing Mobile Legends affects the academic performance.

Background of the Study

Today's world is one that is largely composed of technology. As with any other

innovation in society, the introduction of Online games brought the question "What are

the negative effects or consequences?" Smyth (2007) notes that there seems to be an

increased interest in research in the area of Online gaming to answer this question. In

overviewing the research, one main concern seems to be whether the playing of Online

games impacts academic performance in a negative way. Although no definitive

definition of addiction was given, they found that those addicted to gaming consistently

performed negatively in the academic setting, while there was negative correlation

between time spent playing or engagement and academic performance.Shao-I, Jie-Zhi,

and Der-Hsiang (2004) also studied addiction (once again no definitive definition was

given) and noted a decrease in school performance when the student was addicted to

gaming. They found that gaming addiction physically impacts academic achievement

because the student is too involved in the game to do homework or prepare academically.

There are also others that have found decreased academic performance in relation to

involvement in playing video games. Anderson and Dill (2007) studied video games and

aggression and suggested that not only does gaming have an impact on performance

directly, but it also triggers a higher level of aggression, which is often linked to

problems in school and decreased academic performance.

Hypothesis

The selected Grade 12 Senior High School Students play Mobile Legends they

didn't agree if this game will being BAN. The Mobile Legends affects their academic

performance. They also spend a money for playing this game. Mobile Legends also affect

their relationship with other. They also used Mobile Legends as past time and Mobile

Legends is not important to their life. They agree that eat 3 times a day. They didn't do

their obligations as a student. They agree about school tournament. In our hypothesis they

didn't consider as addicted in playing Mobile Legends.

Scope and Delimitation

The focus this study is to known what is Mobile Legends to the grade 12 Senior

High school students to there academic performances.


This study investigate on how playing Mobile Legends effect there academic

performances. It covers 40 Grade 12 Senior High school who play Mobile Legends. The

participants ages ranges at (17- 20).

Significance of the study

This study will be beneficial to the following individual:

Gamer- They are the one who will acquire the most benefit from this study. Since they

will know the impact of playing Mobile Legends.

Future Researcher - will benefit from this study. They can get proven information about

this study.

Parent- This study will help the parents to have enough knowledge about the impacts of

online gaming among their children.

Readers- This study will help the readers to have the understanding about the impact of

online gaming.

Definition of terms

The following terms will be defined operationally:

Gamer-is a person who plays interactive games, especially video games, table top role-

playing games, and skill-based card games, and who plays for usually long periods of

time

Mobile Legends - is arguably one of the most popularmobile games currently being

played.
Academic Performance- is the extent to which a student, teacher or institution has achieved

their short or long-term educational goals

Impact- the action of one object coming forcibly into contact with another.
