CALCULATIONS OF BURNER ARRANGEMENT FOR PRE/ POST HEATING

AND DHT FOR JOB # 45345

™CONSIDERATIONS
i) Shell Dimensions: -
OD of Shell = 6685mm
ID of Shell = 6405 mm (t=140 mm)

ii) Temperatures: -
Pre-heat = 200 °C
DHT = 350°C – 400 °C
∆Tmax = 50°C [Temperature differential]

™HEAT SUPPLY TO BE PROVIDED

Q = m x Cp x ∆T ------------------------------- ( I )
m = π x ( ro2 – ri2) x L x ρ
= π x ( 3.34252 – 3.20252 ) x 0.5 x 7860 (Considering a heating band of 500mm)
= 11313.06 kg
Cp = 600 J/kg °K
Tmax( reqd.) = 400 °C
Tatm ≈ 20 °C
∆T = (400 – 20) = 380 °C
Hence, from ( I )
Qreq= 2579377.794 kJ.
Considering a temperature increment of 60 °C/hr ,
Heat Rate(input) = 368482.542 kJ/hr
™HEAT LOSSES
i) Radial Conduction and convection
q1 = 2 x π x L x (∆T) (Heat & Mass Transfer by J.P.Hollman)
ln( ro/ri) + 1
k ri x h

L=0.3 m
ro = 3.3425 m
ri = 3.2025 m
h = 3 W/m2 °K ( Considering still air conditions )
k = 35.455 W/m °K
∆T = 380 °C
Hence ,
q1 = 24491.7 kJ/hr

ii) Axial Conduction

Considering the shell as a long fin & the temperature at the fin end essentially that of the
surrounding fluid.
q2 = ( h x P x k x A )1/2 x θ0 (Heat & Mass Transfer by J.P.Hollman)
h = 3 W/m2°K
P = π ( OD +ID )
K = 35.355 W /m °K
A = π ( OD2-ID2) / 4
θ0 = To - Tatm = 400-20 = 380 °C
OD = 6685 mm
ID = 6405 mm
Hence, q2 = 42640 W ( in one direction )
Therefore,
Total heat loss by axial conduction
= 855280 W
= 307008 kJ/hr
iii) Convective heat losses (from shell OD)
q3 = h x A x (∆T)
h= 3 W/m2 °K
A= 2 x π x ro x L
Hence,
q3= 43095.1 kJ/hr
iv) Miscellaneous losses = considering a burner efficiency of 0.65
™TOTAL HEAT INPUT REQUIRED
Heat Supply + Heat losses = 711953.122 kJ/hr
Hence, heat input required (ideal) = 170161 kCal/hr

™NUMBER OF BURNERS
• Model –ST-5
• Working pressure – Min= 0.14 kg/cm2; Max =1.4 kg/cm2
• Rated heat output - Min = 1855 kCal/hr; Max =5290 kCal/hr

Considering a heat output of 2500 kCal/hr and burner efficiency of 0.65,

Required number of burners are: -

Number of burners = Heat i/p required

Heat o/p of 1 burner x 0.65
= 170161
2500 x 0.65
= 105 Burners

™To maintain a uniform heating band, adequate number of burners required = 120 nos.
Burners are to be placed at a pitch of 190 mm (in a staggered form) in 2 rows.
