Hindi sa garbo, kundi sa lalim. Hindi sa dami, kundi sa lalim.”

What Excellent Teachers Do

1
Follow a teaching philosophy.
Teaching philosophy is an explanation of your values and beliefs in teaching.

ASK YOURSELF
• Why did you decide to become a teacher?
• What is your best learning experience as a student?
• What is your best teaching experience as a teacher?
• What are you trying to achieve in your students with your teaching?
• Why is this important to you?

2
Plan the teaching learning process.
• Objectives
• Materials
• Procedure

“If you fail to plan, you plan to fail.”

3
Make learning relevant.

How people learn best. We learn best when we care about what we are doing, when we have
choices. We learn best when the work has meaning to us, when it matters. We learn best when we are
using our hands and minds. We learn best when the work we are doing is real and relevant.

Students need a personal connection to the material, whether that’s through engaging them
emotionally or connecting the new information with previously acquired knowledge.
4
Create a child-friendly environment.

Students feel comfortable in school and see that the school as part of the solution rather than
one of their many problems.

Make Learning Relevant

1. Connect it to their lives.
2. Connect it with what they already know.
3. Provide utility value.
4. Build relatedness.

5
Train students to think.

Learning is about learning how to think.

• Creative thinking
• Critical thinking
• Problem-solving

6
Make learning fun.

When a school is different every day, it’s exciting and kids are excited about learning.
Motivating students to want knowledge and teaching the skills they need to get knowledge have
become so much more important.

When we want to understand something, we cannot just stand outside and observe it. We
have to enter deeply into it and be one with it in order to really understand.

Child-friendly school
• Inclusive of children
• Effective for learning
• Healthy and protective of children
• Gender sensitive
• Involved with children, families, and communities
- UNICEF

7
Motivate students.

All schools must help kids gain knowledge, but they must also help them believe in
themselves, believe in others, and love learning. When we are interested in what we are learning, no
one has to force us to keep learning; we just do.
EMOTIONAL
They touch my heart.
NOVEL
They teach me something new.
MEMORABLE
They present content in ways I’ll never forget.

8
Innovate and share.

9
Continue learning.

Reflect

Imagine that this is your daily planner. Write down as many tasks as you can. You may use
an additional sheet of paper if necessary.

“If better is possible, good is not enough.”
