Speed limits in the Philippines

The general speed limit in the Philippines is 60 km/h as its minimum and 100 km/h is the
maximum. The speed limit sign is a red circle with numbers inside as in most countries
including Japan, Thailand and Malaysia.

Speed limits at expressways

• Maximum Speed for cars - 100 km/h

• Minimum Speed - 60 km/h

• Maximum Speed for trucks and buses - 80 km/h
Types of Roads
The main types of roads in the Philippines are as follows:

 National roads are those connecting major cities

 Provincial roads are those connecting cities and municipalities. They connect
National roads to barangays
 Municipal and city roads are roads within cities or towns. They connect to
provincial and national roads
 Barangay (village or suburb) roads are other public roads within the barangay
 Expressways are highways with interchanges. Expressways in the Philippines
are toll roads. Toll rates vary and payments are made in cash. Electronic
payment is an option on some of the major expressways in the country

The following are the main toll roads /expressways found in the Philippines:

 Manila–Cavite Expressway (Cavitex)

 North Luzon Expressway (NLEX)
 Metro Manila Skyway
 South Luzon Expressway (SLEX)
 Southern Tagalog Arterial Road (STAR) Tollway
 Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway (SCTEX)
 Tarlac-Pangasinan-La Union Expressway (TPLEX)

Speed Limits (for cars and motorcycles)

Speed limit signs are not always displayed on the roads, however, the following
generally applies:

 Expressways: 100 km/h

 National and provincial roads: 80 km/h
 Through streets or boulevards, clear of traffic: 40 km/h
 City and municipal roads, with light traffic: 30 km/h
 Crowded streets, school zones, roads where drivers must pass stationary
vehicles: 20 km/h
CAPACITY OF ROADS

Definition:
It is the ability of a road to accommodate traffic volume. It is the maximum hourly rate at which
vehicles can reasonably be expected to cross a point on a roadway during a given time period
under prevailing traffic roadway and control condition. For multi lane highway it is 2000pcphpl,
and for 2-lane highway is 2800pcph (passenger car per hour).

Units: vph (vehicle per hour or vphpl (vehicle Per hour per lane)

Types of Capacity

Basic capacity:

The maximum volume of vehicles per hour that can pass a certain point or section of a road in
a given time under the ideal condition (most ideal road way, traffic and control conditions that
can possibly be attained)

It assume that all the vehicles are traveling at the same speed and minimum spacing is
allowed.

Possible Capacity:

The maximum number of vehicles that can pass a given section during a given period of time
under prevailing (most frequent/usual) roadway, traffic and control condition.
Practical / Design Capacity:

Capacity without the traffic density being so great as to cause unreasonable delays, hazard or
restriction to the drivers freedom under the prevailing condition of road way, traffic and control.

Basic capacity > possible capacity > design capacity

Factors Affecting Highway Capacity

1. Lane width
2. Width of shoulder
3. Lateral clearance
4. Commercial vehicles
5. Road alignment and geometry (curves, Super elevation etc)
6. Existence of intersections.
7. One way or two way traffic and number of lanes
8. Drivers and vehicular characteristics
9. Single type or mixed traffic
10. Flow speed
11. Weather condition
12. Parking
13. Presence of pedestrians
