I. Introduction

Learning a second language is a way of life among the majority of Filipinos. The language

situation in the Philippines is complex. There are an estimated 73 to 130 languages and dialects

in the country. And today we live in a multilingual world that is becoming increasingly

globalized and it is therefore very important to know more than one language. This paper

examines the five different people who have acquired their second language. According to Glenn

(2019), knowing more than one language opens up the subjects prospects in a highly important

way. It is important to know more than one language is that it increases cultural awareness and

allows you to communicate with different people.. The Importance and Advantages of Learning

a Second Language. (2016), Language is one of the main components of the civilization and

culture of the people who speak it. Hence, learning a second language can be a comparatively

easy and wonderful way of absorbing another culture. According to Role of Language In Human

Life, Language is an abstract system of symbol and meanings. This system includes grammar

that relates meaning so that we can communicate with each other. As language plays very

important role in the development of a person personality. Not only in personality but by

learning more than one language it can develop person’s cognitive skills, learning more than one

language also important in social development of person.

This paper investigates the fact that whether second language acquisition is important to the five

participants who are Filipinos living in the Philippines and how it was developed. Primarily, this

study tried to answer the following questions:

1. How important is your second language in your daily life?

2. How often do you use your second language?

3. How do you develop your second language?

4. Who are the people who influence you to improve your second language?

5. What do you prefer first language or second language?

II. Research Methodology

2.1 Research Design

The research is conducted through a qualitative method. Since this study’s main aim

was to determine and describe how the five adults acquired and develop their second

language t deemed appropriate to utilize the case study research design. A case study is an

“in depth study of a particular situation rather than a sweeping statistical survey.

2.2 Subject of the study and Research Locale

The subjects of this study are Prof. Domingo M. Lanuncia, Prof. April lidon, Mrs. Aida

Lee, Divine Lim and Maria Lourdes Legaspi. The five subjects were all adults. It consists of two

college students, two professors from Our Lady of Fatima University, and a grandmother from

Quezon City.

2.3 Data Collection

The researchers will first introduce themselves and will inform the respondents the

research topic and what they need to do or to answer. Each researcher gathered data using face

to face interview and ask their chosen respondents with their self-made questionnaire. The

researchers also used another method by using their smartphones to record the voice of each

participant to make it easier for them to analyze the data after conducting it. The discussion

among the subjects held in English. Both spoken and written data are analyzed and relate it to the

questions made.
2.4 Analysis of Data

The collected date includes a video of the five respondents. The group was able to use

the questionnaire, the interview and empirical notes they taken while doing it. After the data

gathering process, the data was being analyzed manually by examining each of the interview

data coded.
