Title: FACTORS AFFECTING GRAMMATICAL SKILLS


LEVEL IN SUBJECT-VERB AGREEMENT AMONG
GRADE 10 STUDENTS OF IMMACULATE
CONCEPTION ACADEMY, BONE SOUTH, ARITAO
NUEVA VIZCAYA

This study sought to determine the level of grammatical skills on subject-

verb agreement of Grade 10 students of Immaculate Conception Academy, Aritao,

Nueva Vizcaya.

Specifically, it sought answers to the following questions:

1. What is the profile of the respondents in terms of:

a. Mother tongue;

b. School graduated from;

c. English Academic Performance; and

d. Writing Proficiency Level?

2. What is the respondents’ level of the grammatical skills in subject-verb

agreement?

3. Is there significant relationship on the level of the grammatical skills in

subject verb agreement when grouped according to the profile variables?


The data were gathered using a survey questionnaire composed of two

parts: Profile of the Respondents, which is used to establish the profile of the

respondents in terms of mother tongue, school graduated from, academic

performance in English and writing proficiency skills; Grammatical Skills on

Subject-Verb Agreement, an 85-item tool, which is used to elicit the respondents’

level of grammatical skills on subject verb agreement.

Moreover, Frequency and Percentage was used to find the respondents

profile in terms of mother tongue, school graduated from, academic performance

in English and writing proficiency skills; Pearson-r was used to test a significant

relationship in the level of grammatical skills on subject verb agreement when

grouped according to the profile variables.

Summary of Findings

1. Profile of the respondents

a. Majority of the respondents’ mother tongue is Iloco with 19 or

60.00%, followed by Tagalog with 11 or 32.00%; and Ibaloi with

3 or 8.00%.

b. Majority of the respondents graduated from Aritao District with 30

or 91.00% while 3 or 9.00% of the respondents graduated from

Sta. Fe District.

c. Majority of the respondents’ English academic performance in

approaching proficiency with 12 or 34.00%; 9 or 27.00% are


developing; 7 or 21.00% are advanced; 3 or 12.00% are

beginning; and 2 or 6.00% are proficient.

d. The respondents’ writing proficiency level is good with 15 or

45.45% while 9 or 27.27% has very good and poor writing

proficiency level.

2. Level of Grammatical Skills on Subject Verb Agreement

The level of grammatical skills on subject verb agreement among the Grade

10 students of Immaculate Conception Academy, Aritao, Nueva Vizcaya is

beginning as indicated by the average percentage of correct answers of 72.70%.

3. Relationship between the Level of Grammatical Skills on Subject Verb

Agreement when grouped according to the Profile Variables

All profile variables included in this study did not register any relationship to

the level of grammatical skills on subject-verb agreement among Grade 10

students of Immaculate Conception Academy, Aritao, Nueva Vizcaya.

Conclusion

Based on the foregoing findings, the conclusions below were drawn:

1. Majority of the respondents are speaking Iloco as their mother tongue,

graduated from Aritao District, has an approaching proficiency level of

academic performance in English, and has an advanced writing proficiency

skill.

2. The level of proficiency on the grammatical skills on subject-verb agreement

of Grade 10 students of Immaculate Conception Academy is beginning.


3. There is no significant relationship between the level of grammatical skills

on subject verb agreement when grouped according to their profile

variables.

Recommendations

1. For Students

a. The students should be given high motivation in learning English,

especially in mastering grammar to make good and right sentences

in English.

b. The students should master the principles of agreement in order to

apply it in the sentences easier.

c. The students should understand to differentiate between plural and

singular form as the basic of the agreement.

d. The students should improve their memorization of vocabulary. It

would help them to use the suitable words in the sentences.

e. The students should read books and must communicate to one

another through English language in order for them to practice

correct use of grammar.

2. For Teachers

a. For the English teacher should be good facilitators and motivators to

the students’ interest in learning English. Based on the result of the

study, the students had problems in applying subject-verb

agreement in sentence. The teacher should give special exercise to


improve the students writing. Beside that the English teachers should

give additional homework to the students.

b. Remedial actions should be taken in order to help the students

increase their level or proficiency on grammatical skills on subject

verb agreement. Lectures can employ direct approach in teaching

these students and at the same time organize activities which are

related to subject verb agreement. These students should be allowed

to do peer-correction to their term papers and other activities on

subject verb agreement together to involve them in learning directly.

c. Teachers should ensure intensive language teaching right from the

lower level so as to instill in the students the correct use of

subject/verb agreement.

d. Teachers should monitor students’ written and oral expressions to

offer the needed assistance when situation demands as well as carry

out on the spot correction or re-teach areas where students have

problems.

e. Language training activities such as debate, quiz, drama, group

discussions, and tutorials should be organized to familiarize students

with correct use of English language.
