 Understanding Past Continuous Tense

Past continuous tense or past progressive tense is a verb form used to indicate that an action
is occurring at a certain time in the past.

 Pengertian Past Continuous Tense

Past continuous tense atau past progressive tense adalah suatu bentuk kata kerja yang
digunakan untuk menyatakan bahwa suatu aksi sedang terjadi pada waktu tertentu di masa
lampau.

 The Past Continuous Tense Formula

The Past Continuous Tense formula consists of two elements, Past and Continuous. So the
Past Continuous Tense formula is S + was / were + V-ing. The main requirement of the past is
to use verb 2 that is in the was / were, while the characteristic possessed by the continuous is
Verb-Ing. If you find the word continuous wherever it is his tenses means he uses Verb-ing
because of its nature that is still ongoing. Here is the formula of Past Continuous Tense:

Rumus Past Continuous Tense ini terdiri dari dua unsur yaitu Past dan Continuous. Maka rumus
Past Continuous Tense adalah S + was / were + V-ing. Yang merupakan syarat utama dari past
adalah dengan menggunakan verb 2 yaitu ada pada was / were, sementara ciri khas yang
dipunyai oleh continuous adalah Verb-Ing. Jika kalian menemukan kata continuous dimanapun
itu tenses-nya berarti dia menggunakan Verb-ing karena sifatnya yang masih berlangsung.

 Function Past Continous Tense

Past Continuous Tense is useful for declaring an activity that occurred in the
past. Example: I was crying when you left me alone yesterday
The function of the Past Continuous Tense is also to indicate there is an activity
occurring (Simple past tense) along with the longer activity duration is occurring. Example:
My sister was studying when someone knocked the door
Past Continuous Tense is used to express the habit of someone repeated several
times. Example: You are always bullying her no matter what
  Fungsi Past Continuous Tense
Past Continuous Tense berguna untuk menyatakan suatu aktivitas yang terjadi di masa
lalu. Contoh: I was crying when you left me alone yesterday (Aku menangis saat kau
meninggalkanku sendirian kemarin)
Fungsi dari Past Continuous Tense juga adalah untuk menunjukkan ada aktivitas yang
terjadi (Simple past tense) bersamaan dengan aktivitas yang lebih panjang durasinya sedang
terjadi. Contoh : My sister was studying when someone knocked the door (Saudara
perempuanku sedang belajar ketika seseorang mengetuk pintu)
Past Continuous Tense digunakan untuk menyatakan kebiasaan dari seseorang yang
diulangi beberapa kali. Contoh: You was always bullying her no matter what (Kau selalu mem-
buli dia tak peduli apapun)

 I was crying when you came last night (Aku menangis saat kau datang malam kemarin)
 I was listening to the music when you knocked at my door (Aku sedang mendengarkan
musik ketika kau mengetuk pintuku)
 That man was smoking when he carried the baby (Orang itu sedang merokok ketika dia
menggendong bayi)
 We were playing football when the sun goes down (Kami sedang bermain bola ketika
matahari terbenam)
 I was going to the party when my parents didn't home (Aku pergi ke pesta ketika orang
tuaku sedang tidak ada di rumah)
 My mother was listening to Alan Walkers' songs when she cooked foods (Ibuku sedang
mendengarkan lagu-lagu Alan Walker ketika dia memasak)
 Sammy was eating pizza when his friends came (Sammy sedang makan pizza ketika
teman-temannya datang)
 My wife was not cooking breakfast when i wake up (Istriku tidak memasak ketika aku
bangun tidur)
 The music was not playing when the singer starts singing (Musik tidak berputar ketika
penyanyi mulai bernyanyi)
 The audience was listening to the explanation while the lecturer gave his explanation
(Penonton sedang mendengarkan penjelasan ketika dosen menjelaskan paparannya)
 They were seeing the accident of cars on the road yesterday (Mereka melihat
kecelakaan mobil di jalan kemarin)
