A classroom philosophy, simply put, is a statement of what you believe about how to best
manage a class and how you will go about achieving that vision. This resource will help you
build it bit by bit. Complete the activities linked to each chapter of the text and by the end
of chapter 10 you should be able to bring your work together to form your classroom
philosophy.

As a pre-service teacher, my life has been touched by some amazing teachers. Looking back
at this, these teachers were extraordinary. They connected with students on a personal level
but also managed to teach them. The question, what made them extraordinary, makes me
realise now that I too would like to be one of those teachers that leave a niche on their
students for years to come. These teachers were good communicators, good listeners who
connected with their students, who listened to their students and took an interest in the lives
of their students.
Classroom management is a broad part of a teacher’s life. A teacher must take this into
does not only mean behavior or curriculum but it means a whole range of different things that
come together to create a positive platform. I realise that classroom dynamics plays a part in
classroom management. The temperature, acoustics, the location of the school (SES areas) all
can affect student engagement within the classroom. Relationships within the classroom
(whether it be between the teacher and the student or the students with each other) can
provide support. As a teacher I can influence that. Collaborative learning ensures that
students come out of their comfort zones. Peer support offers students social and academic
support and the ability to work well together. I can as a teacher show interest in the welfare
of my students hence providing them with academic, social and emotional support. Within
classroom management, I can academically focus on students and drive them to achieve their
best.
Classrooms are places where learning takes place. Student engagement and motivation
depends on it. Classroom culture is how a classroom works. As a teacher I need to understand

that teachers and students bring an element to the classroom culture (theoretic level) and this
becomes the basis for interactions especially in regards to behavior, rules and routines.
Student bring their values, beliefs and expectations when they walk in the classroom. It is
important for me as a teacher to uphold these ideals. A teachers preferred teaching style
classroom culture, routines are established this will influence the classroom’s physical
focus especially on this. Establishing rules early and repetition also helps in creating a

her teaching ways and methods. I need to reflect back on my practices and see whether the
students have understood the concept or not. Teachers should make it a habit to reflect back
because sometimes things go wrong in the classroom and at that time you do not have any
idea as to why it went wrong but by reflecting back on it, you might come across something

classroom management. I need to be organized and prepared for lessons. Transitioning from
one activity to the next can create chaos so it needs to be a smooth transition with minimal
disruption. Planning goes a long way. I need to plan my activities in advance. The Plan –

Implement- Review cycle is helpful in delivering curriculums. The planning comes in handy
when I have to plan a lesson. Within this I decide how I want the lesson delivered and what I
want the students to learn. Then comes the implement part, which is where I implement my
planning or put it in motion. The final part is the review part. I reflect back on my planning
and implementing and take any action necessary to modify it to gain better results. Students
learn through a variety of methods so I must utilize and incorporate the use of ICT’s to
enhance my pedagogical approach. All students have different learning styles so I must take
that into consideration when structuring my lessons. The rules of the classroom need to be
explained to the students in order to have minimal disturbance. It might help to have these
rules repeated again and again so the students become familiar with them.
Positive behavior Intervention and support (PBIS) will be helpful because it will teach
students behavioural expectations. As a teacher dealing with students with behavior issues
can be dauting but with the help of PBIS, the student and teacher (together) can help by
setting behavior goals. Social emotion learning is important because as a teacher we teacher

escape the abuse and not the curriculum being taught. As teachers we need to have empathy
and compassion and need to look for signs that can sometimes be overlooked. Choice Theory
looked at survival, belonging, power, freedom and fun. This approach is better implemented
as a whole school approach on behaviour. It is important that the school supports teachers

who are trying to management behaviour. This is good for teachers because we get the
support of other teachers and the whole school comes together to achieve results. Classroom
management is an important part of a teacher’s life and keeps developing overtime. As I gain

1.1 What is a ‘good teacher’? Think about the teachers from your days in primary and
secondary schooling. What qualities did they have that made them ‘good’? Make a list

Good teachers are good communicators. They take an interest in the students lives and try
to make a difference. The teachers that have left an impression on me were teachers who
listened to me, took an interest in my life and cared about my performance. They were good
listeners who took time out to listen to what I had to say.

classroom behavior, what do you think are the key considerations when a teacher is
planning their strategy for classroom management? list them below.
Classroom management – many things fall in this category. Small things from the
temperature of the classroom to major things like misbehaviour. Teachers need to focus on
issues of misbehaviour, the physical classroom setting and the locality of the school. A
school in a low SES area might trigger other obstacles for teachers e.g. students turning up
to class hungry. The teacher needs to come up with strategies to manage the classroom.
The teacher needs to take all this into consideration when planning their strategy.

2.1 In the box below, list the theories that you think are ‘not for you’ under the heading
‘Not me’, and the theories that you think are more favourable under the heading ‘More
like me’.
2.2 Now take a closer look at the theories you placed in the ‘More like me’ column. Read
the suggested readings provided in this chapter and the online companion. Get to know
the theories more intimately. Use this new knowledge, specifically the key philosophies
behind the theories (or theory), to develop your own statement of belief about the sort

3.2 Briefly outline your understanding of how beliefs can help or hinder your ability to
create positive learning environments:
Teacher personal beliefs affect the way we create Positive Learning Environments by
hindering the chance to openly communicate. A teacher that comes in a classroom with
prejudice or bias will not be able to look at everyone in a fair manner.
Your teaching philosophy should describe how and for what purpose you might engage in a
cycle of professional reflexivity, be it through critical analysis using various perspectives or
an action research model, or both.
3.3 Why should teachers engage in professional reflexivity?. Once you have given this some
thought and done some further reading, complete the following sentence.

3.4 Having thought up a justification for it, how will you go about engaging in reflection
about your practice in your teaching career? Once you have thought this out, think of
some practical and achievable ways you can engage in professional reflexivity and
complete the next sentence.
As a consequence of this belief, I will keep a diary that I will use. In the diary I will write my
reflection of the day. This will help me to better myself as a teacher. It will also be a
beneficial to see what changes could be incorporated to achieve better outcomes.
The next part of your teaching philosophy will be about how you will deliver curriculum and
assess student achievement/growth. After reading this chapter, please reflect on the

4.1 Using the PIR Cycle (see Ch 5 p118) as a stimulus, explain how you will go about
planning your teaching program in the box below.

4.2 Pedagogy refers to how you will teach the curriculum. Usually, the type of pedagogy
you implement is influenced by a basic belief about how students best learn. After
considering your pedagogical approach and strategies, complete the sentences below.
I believe that students best learn through different types of learning. Some students are pen
and paper students whilst others may be a block and brick type student. Those that are pen
and paper students do better that way but those that are brick type students physically
need to hold something or be involved to better understand a concept.
Therefore I will use …a variety of methods. Firstly, I must get to know my students in order
to decide which method to use. Certain students, especially autistic kids tend to be more
engaged via visual aids. So I need to take that into consideration whilst planning the lessons.
As explained in Chs 3 & 4, there are several dimensions to classroom organisation. Each of
these put together become the manifestation of your classroom culture. Your classroom
culture is, simply put, the way your class operates and incorporates:
rules and procedures
organisation of the physical space.
It is now time to think about how your teaching philosophy will describe these two aspects
and explain them in terms of an overarching set of beliefs or approaches. After reading
these chapters, complete the next two activities.
4.3 What values do you hold as important to establishing an orderly, productive and
positive classroom? Answer this question below, then list the key rules/expectations
you think flow naturally from those values and which you want to stress in your class.

There are many rules I would like to incorporate within the classroom environment. The
way I would do it is by repetition. Firstly, on the first day I would be explicit about what is
expected within the classroom for example not to talk over the teacher. These rules would
be on the wall as well. But for the first few weeks, these would be repeated every time in
class so that students get familiar with them. I would probably go with a reward system for
good behaviour and make it clear that certain behaviours are unacceptable for which there
would be consequences.
5.1 After reading Ziporli and Killu and reflecting on the lecture content what would you add
about aspects of your classroom management that have not been mentioned so far in
your philosophy? Add these in the box below in rough draft form. You can refine them

Classroom management does not limit to only misbehaviour but it covers a whole lot of
other stuff. Within it comes reflexivity (a teachers own reflection on her practices), ICT
usage (the use of technology within the classroom), positive learning environment (creating
a positive learning environment for student) and an inclusive environment (a classroom
where everyone is included). There are other factors that also affect students within the
classroom example the physical layout of the classroom, the temperature, the location of
the school (low SES areas) etc.

teach what this expectation looks like, is exemplified by and demonstrated in your

students. Giving them a chance to contribute ideas, listening to them, not interrupting them
whilst they are contributing towards the lesson and guiding them are just some of the ways I
could help them understand respect.

time to reflect back on the classroom practices that could help better manage the classroom
and curb misbehaviour. This will prevent burnouts.

Planning – Assessment needs to be made as to what the students need to learn and what
content will help them learn it. Using the syllabus and the school scope and sequence, design
the topic themes that will target students’ individual learning needs.
Implement - Implementation phase is when the lesson designed has to be delivered to the
students. Students engage with the lesson. This is the pedagogy phase of the PIR Cycle. As a
teacher, I must include explicit teaching, facilitate individual learning, monitor student
performance and provide feedback.
Review – This is when the teacher reflects and sees how the curriculum went, how well the
students learnt and the effectiveness of the pedagogy. This is when the teacher can monitor
during the implementation phase and at times the teacher might have to redesign and
replan.

your final submission. Look at the Unit Learning Guide rubric and instructions and now write
your own personal reflection and philosophy You have to reflect on what you have learnt
and what you are still to learn. This reflection is an opportunity to provide your own
behaviour management philosophy/model.
Your personal model can be based on your personal experience and any of the theories and
research explored in PPLE or other Units which form part of your course. You need to
appropriately identify and credit these theories which influenced your thinking in relation to
the development of your personal approach within your text. You must provide at the end
(not counted to word limit) an ‘acknowledgement’ section where you may list the
theories/policies/ people that may have influence your model to date.
