Key Concepts:

Computers are designed to make people’s lives easier by assisting them in their varied tasks.
Learning Activities:
1. Review
- Try to recall the history of CSS from Web Development 2
2. Motivation (Exploration)
 Explore various CSS websites and designs: http://www.mabucplus.com/
 Ask the students if they are familiar with Google Personas and Customized Designs
in Multiply. These design templates use CSS style sheets.
 If time allows, have the students visit Zen Garden and try applying the different
designs to the website: http://www.csszengarden.com/
3. Discussion (Expound)
 Discuss the Motivation Activity, point out the contents of the websites/s does not
change, even if they select different design templates. Only the layout and the
design (color, background and font styles) change. That is the wonder of using CSS.
 Proceed to discussion on:
- History and Revisions to CSS
- Understanding CSS Rules, Markup Language and tags.
- Ways of inserting CSS style Sheets
 Let students read more about the Three Types of Using CSS Style Sheets from these
Websites:

Explain the following:
1. What is the definition of usability for web developers Refers to the design, functionality,
readability, and ease of use for information acquisition and sharing purposes. It relates to a
simple concept but not something that is always easy or intuitive to implement, (for usability
guidelines visit the following websites: http://ist.mit.edu/services/web/reference/guidelines/
usability http://www.stcsig.org/usability/topics/articles/ucd%20_web_devel.html)

2. What is the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) W3C is an international community where
Member organizations, a full-time staff, and the public work together to develop Web
standards. It is headed by Web inventor Tim Berners-Lee and CEO Jeffrey Jaffe. Its mission is to
lead the Web to its full potential by developing standards to ensure its long-term growth

3. What is the role of W3C in the development of CSS The "Cascading Style Sheet (CSS ) Working
Group” is responsible for the development of CSS at W3C. Its members include: Adobe, AOL ,
Apple, Google, HP, IBM Microsoft, the Mozilla Foundation, Oracle, etc. There are different levels
of CSS, depending on what CSS are being used for (cell phones, television, printers, speech
synthesizers, etc.) Browsers typically implement CSS level 1, 2 or 3.
 In 1996, W3C released Cascading Style Sheets Level 1 as a Recommendation.
 In 1999, the CSS Level 1 Recommendation was revised.
 CSS 2.1 (Cascading Style Sheets, level 2 revision 1) is currently a Working Draft.
 CSS 3 is “under development”.

4. Explain the development of CSS

The first version of CSS was written by Tim Berners-Lee but was specific only to his NeXT
browser. This was followed in 1994 with the release of the first version of Mozilla by Marc
Andreesen. The browser provided limited support for style sheets. In October of the same year,
Hakon Wium Lie presented the first draft of Cascading Style Sheets at the Mosaic and Web
Conference in Chicago. By 1996, CSS became an official standard for Web development.
