China -
Is a cultural region, an ancient civilization, and, depending on perspective, a national or multinational enti-
ty extending over a large area in East Asia.
The last Chinese Civil War (with major combat ending in 1949) has resulted in two political entities using
the name China:
Flag of the People's Republic of China People's Republic of China (PRC), commonly known as China, has
control over mainland China and the largely self-governing territories of Hong Kong and Macau.
Flag of the Republic of China Republic of China (ROC), commonly known as Taiwan, has control over the
islands of Taiwan, Pescadores, Kinmen, and Matsu.
China has one of the world's oldest people and continuous civilizations, consisting of states and cultures dat-
ing back more than six millennia. It has the world's longest continuously used written language system, and is
the source of many major inventions, such as what the British scholar and biochemist Joseph Needham called
the "four great inventions of Ancient China": paper, the compass, gunpowder, and printing. Historically, China's
cultural sphere has extended across East Asia as a whole, with Chinese religion, customs, and writing systems
being adopted to varying degrees by neighbors such as Japan, Korea and Vietnam. The first evidence of human
presence in the region was found at the Zhoukoudian cave and is one of the first known specimens of Homo
erectus, now commonly known as the Peking Man, estimated to have lived approximately from 300,000 to
550,000 years ago. Noticeably, it is also known that the Peking Man was able to control and use fire.

Hong Kong
Hong Kong -
Is a territory located in Southern China in East Asia, bordering the province of Guangdong to the north and
facing the South China Sea to the east, west and south. It has a population of 7 million people, but with only
1,108km2 of land, making it one of the most densely populated areas in the world.
Beginning as a trading port, Hong Kong became a dependent territory of the United Kingdom in 1842, and
remained so until transfer of sovereignty of Hong Kong to the People's Republic of China in 1997. Along with
Macau, Hong Kong is one of the two special administrative regions under the One Country, Two Systems pol-
icy.[10] As a result, Hong Kong is largely self-governing, it has its own currency, legal and political systems, a
high degree of autonomy in all of its affairs, with the exception of foreign affairs and defence, and is generally
not considered a part of mainland China.
Renowned for its expansive skyline and natural setting, Hong Kong is one of the world's leading financial
capitals, a major business and cultural hub, and maintains a highly developed capitalist economy. Its identity as
a cosmopolitan centre where east meets west is reflected in its cuisine, cinema, music and traditions,[16] and
although the population is predominantly Chinese, residents and expatriates of other ethnicities form a small
but significant segment of society.

India
India -
Is a country in South Asia. It is the seventh-largest country by geographical area, the second-most populous
country, and the most populous democracy in the world. Bounded by the Indian Ocean on the south, the Arabian
Sea on the west, and the Bay of Bengal on the east, India has a coastline of 7,517 kilometers (4,671 mi). It is
bordered by Pakistan to the west; People's Republic of China (PRC), Nepal, and Bhutan to the north-east; and
Bangladesh and Myanmar to the east. India is in the vicinity of Sri Lanka, the Maldives, and Indonesia in the
Indian Ocean.
Home to the Indus Valley Civilization and a region of historic trade routes and vast empires, the Indian sub -
continent was identified with its commercial and cultural wealth for much of its long history. Four major world
religions, Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism and Sikhism originated there, while Zoroastrianism, Judaism,
Christianity and Islam arrived in the first millennium CE and shaped the region's diverse culture. Gradually
annexed by the British East India Company from the early eighteenth century and colonised by the United
Kingdom from the mid-nineteenth century, India became an independent nation in 1947 after a struggle for
independence that was marked by widespread nonviolent resistance.
India is a republic consisting of 28 states and seven union territories with a parliamentary system of democ-
racy. It has the world's twelfth largest economy at market exchange rates and the fourth largest in purchasing
power. Economic reforms since 1991 have transformed it into one of the fastest growing economies; however,
it still suffers from high levels of poverty, illiteracy, and malnutrition. A pluralistic, multilingual, and multieth-
nic society, India is also home to a diversity of wildlife in a variety of protected habitats.

Indonesia
Indonesia -
Is a transcontinental country in Southeast Asia and Oceania. Comprising 17,508 islands, it is the world's
largest archipelagic state. With an estimated population of around 237 million people,[3] it is the world's fourth
most populous country and the most populous Muslim-majority nation; however, no reference is made to Islam
in the Indonesian constitution. Indonesia is a republic, with an elected legislature and president. The nation's
capital city is Jakarta. The country shares land borders with Papua New Guinea, East Timor and Malaysia.
Other neighboring countries include Singapore, the Philippines, Australia, and the Indian territory of the
Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
The Indonesian archipelago has been an important trade region since at least the seventh century, when the
Srivijaya Kingdom traded with China and India. Local rulers gradually adopted Indian cultural, religious and
political models from the early centuries CE, and Hindu and Buddhist kingdoms flourished. Indonesian histo-
ry has been influenced by foreign powers drawn to its natural resources. Muslim traders brought Islam, and
European powers fought one another to monopolize trade in the Spice Islands of Maluku during the Age of
Discovery. Following three and a half centuries of Dutch colonialism, Indonesia secured its independence after
World War II. Indonesia's history has since been turbulent, with challenges posed by natural disasters, corrup-
tion, separatism, a democratization process, and periods of rapid economic change.
Across its many islands, Indonesia consists of distinct ethnic, linguistic, and religious groups. The Javanese
are the largest and most politically dominant ethnic group. As a unitary state and a nation, Indonesia has devel-
oped a shared identity defined by a national language, ethnic diversity, religious pluralism within a majority
Muslim population, and a history of colonialism and rebellion against it. Indonesia's national motto, "Bhinneka
tunggal ika" ("Unity in Diversity" literally, "many, yet one"), articulates the diversity that shapes the country.
However, sectarian tensions and separatism have led to violent confrontations that have undermined political
and economic stability. Despite its large population and densely populated regions, Indonesia has vast areas of
wilderness that support the world's second highest level of biodiversity. The country is richly endowed with nat-
ural resources, yet poverty is a defining feature of contemporary Indonesia.

Is an island country in East Asia. Located in the Pacific Ocean, it lies to the east of the Sea of Japan, People's
Republic of China, North Korea, South Korea and Russia, stretching from the Sea of Okhotsk in the north to
the East China Sea and Taiwan in the south. The characters which make up Japan's name mean "sun-origin",
which is why Japan is sometimes identified as the "Land of the Rising Sun".
Japan comprises over 3,000 islands making it an archipelago. The four largest islands are Honshu-,
Hokkaido-, Kyu-shu- and Shikoku, together accounting for 97% of Japan's land area. Most of the islands are
mountainous, many volcanic; for example, Japan’s highest peak, Mount Fuji, is a volcano. Japan has the world's
tenth largest population, with about 128 million people. The Greater Tokyo Area, which includes the de facto
capital city of Tokyo and several surrounding prefectures, is the largest metropolitan area in the world, with over
30 million residents.
Archaeological research indicates that people were living on the islands of Japan as early as the Upper
Paleolithic period. The first written mention of Japan begins with brief appearances in Chinese history texts
from the first century A.D. Influence from the outside world followed by long periods of isolation has charac-
terized Japan's history. Since adopting its constitution in 1947, Japan has maintained a unitary constitutional
A major economic power, Japan has the world's second largest economy by nominal GDP and the third
largest in purchasing power parity. It is a member of the United Nations, G8, OECD and APEC, with the world's
fifth largest defense budget. It is also the world's fourth largest exporter and sixth largest importer. It is a devel-
oped country with high living standards (8th highest HDI), the longest life expectancy in the world (according
to UN estimates); and is a world leader in technology, machinery, and robotics.

Korea
Korea -
Is a geographic area composed of two sovereign countries, a civilization, and a former state situated on the
Korean Peninsula in East Asia. It borders China to the north and west, and Russia to the east, with Mongolia
situated farther to the northwest, and Japan to the east. The Korean Peninsula is divided into two separate states.
The southern portion of the peninsula is controlled by the state of the Republic of Korea, a democracy, is
commonly referred to as South Korea. South Korea enjoys close relations with the United States of America,
Japan, the European Union and NATO, The Republic of China, Thailand, the Philippines, Singapore, Australia,
Canada, and New Zealand.
The northern portion of the peninsula is controlled by the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, a
Stalinist, totalitarian dictatorship, is commonly referred to as North Korea. It is under the ruler Kim-Jong-il.
North Korea has close relations with the People's Republic of China, the Russian Federation, the Islamic
Republic of Iran, the Syrian Arab Republic, the Republic of Belarus, and the Palestinian National Authority.
The United States of America considers North Korea to be a Rogue State, and former President of the United
States George W. Bush declared the country a member of the Axis of Evil.
Limited linguistic evidence suggests probable Altaic origins of these people, whose northern Mongolian
steppe culture absorbed migration and trade with the peoples of Manchuria and China. The adoption of the
Chinese writing system ("Hanja" in Korean) in the 2nd century BC, and Buddhism in the 4th century AD, had
profound effects on the Three Kingdoms of Korea. Baekje later passed on a modified version of these cultural
advances to Japan.
Since the Goryeo Dynasty, Korea was ruled by a single government and maintained political and cultural
independence until the nineteenth century, despite the Mongol invasions of the Goryeo Dynasty in the 13th cen-
tury and Japanese invasions of the Joseon Dynasty in the 16th century. In 1377, Korea produced the Jikji, the
world's oldest existing document printed with movable metal type.[5] In the 15th century, the turtle ships were
deployed, and King Sejong the Great promulgated the Korean alphabet Hangul to increase literacy among his
people who could neither read nor write Hanja (Chinese characters).
During the latter part of the Joseon Dynasty, Korea's isolationist policy earned it the Western nickname the
"Hermit Kingdom". By the late 19th century, the country became the object of the colonial designs of Japan and
Europe. In 1910, Korea was forcibly annexed by Japan and remained occupied until the end of World War II in
August 1945.
In 1945, the Soviet Union and the United States agreed on the surrender and disarming of Japanese troops
in Korea; the Soviet Union accepting the surrender of Japanese weaponry north of the 38th parallel and the
United States taking the surrender south of it. This minor decision by allied armies soon became the basis for
the division of Korea by the two superpowers, exacerbated by their inability to agree on the terms of Korean
independence. The two Cold War rivals then established governments sympathetic to their own ideologies,
leading to Korea's current division into two political entities: North Korea and South Korea.

Is a landlocked country in South Asia and is the world's youngest republic. It is bordered to the north by the
People's Republic of China, and to the south, east, and west by India. With an area of 147,181 square kilome-
ters and a population of approximately 30 million, Nepal is the world's 93rd largest country by land mass[3]
and the 41st most populous country.[4] Kathmandu is the nation's capital and the country's largest metropolitan
city.
Nepal is a country of highly diverse and rich geography, culture, and religions. The mountainous north con-
tains eight of the world's ten highest mountains, including the highest, Mount Everest. The fertile and humid
south is heavily urbanized. Although Hinduism is practiced by a majority of the population, the nation also has
a strong Buddhist tradition, as it is the birthplace of Gautama Buddha.
Nepal had been a monarchy throughout most of its history. Prithvi Narayan Shah, a Shah dynasty king, uni-
fied the many small kingdoms in 1768. Since then, the country had been ruled by a dynasty of kings. However,
a decade-long civil war by the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) along with several weeks of mass protests
by all major political parties of Nepal in 2006, culminated in a peace accord and the ensuing elections for the
constituent assembly voted overwhelmingly in favor of the abdication of the last Nepali monarch Gyanendra
Shah and the establishment of a federal democratic republic in 2008.[5] The first President of Nepal, Dr Ram
Baran Yadav was sworn in on 23 July, 2008.

Singapore -
Is an island city-state in Asia located at the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula. The microstate lies 137 kilo-
metres (85 mi) north of the equator, south of the Malaysian state of Johor and north of Indonesia's Riau Islands.
At 710.2 km2 (274.2 sq mi),[4] Singapore, the smallest nation in Southeast Asia, is by orders of magnitude the
largest of the three remaining sovereign city-states in the world (along with Monaco and Vatican City).
Before European settlement, the island now known as Singapore was the site of a Malay fishing village at
the mouth of the Singapore River. Several hundred indigenous Orang Laut people also lived along the nearby
coast, rivers and on smaller islands. In 1819 the British East India Company, led by Sir Stamford Raffles, estab-
lished a trading post on the island, which was used as a port along the spice route. Singapore became one of the
most important commercial and military centres of the British Empire, and the hub of British power in
Southeast Asia.
The city was occupied by the Japanese during World War II, which Winston Churchill called "Britain's
greatest defeat". Singapore reverted to British rule in 1945, immediately after the war. Eighteen years later
(1963) the city, having achieved independence from Britain, merged with Malaya, Sabah, and Sarawak to form
Malaysia. However, less than two years later it seceded from the federation and became an independent repub-
lic on 9 August 1965. Singapore joined the United Nations on 21 September that same year. It is also a mem-
ber of the British Commonwealth of Nations.
Since independence, Singapore's standard of living has risen dramatically. Foreign direct investment and a
state-led drive to industrialisation based on plans drawn up by the Dutch economist Albert Winsemius have cre-
ated a modern economy focused on industry, education and urban planning. Singapore is the 5th wealthiest
country in the world in terms of GDP (PPP) per capita. In December 2008, the foreign exchange reserves of this
small island nation stood at around US$174.2billion.The Singapore government had for the first time in histo-
ry tapped into her official reserves and withdrew some S$4.9billion with the President's approval. The funds
were then used as part of the S$20.5billion Resilience Package unveiled by Finance Minister Mr. Tharman
Shanmugaratnam on 05 February 2009. As at January 2009 Singapore's official reserves stood at US$170.3bil-
lion.
The population of Singapore is approximately 4.86 million] Singapore is highly cosmopolitan and diverse
with Chinese people forming an ethnic majority with large populations of Malay, Indian and other people.
English, Malay, Tamil, and Chinese are the official languages.
The Constitution of the Republic of Singapore established the nation's political system as a representative
democracy, while the country is recognised as a parliamentary republic. The People's Action Party (PAP) dom-
inates the political process and has won control of Parliament in every election since self-government in 1959.

Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka -
Is an island country in South Asia, located about 31 kilometres (19.3 mi) off the southern coast of India. It is
home to around twenty million people.
Because of its location in the path of major sea routes, Sri Lanka is a strategic naval link between West Asia
and South East Asia, and has been a center of Buddhist religion and culture from ancient times. Today, the coun-
try is a multi-religious and multi-ethnic nation, with more than a quarter of the population following faiths other
than Buddhism, notably Hinduism, Christianity and Islam. The Sinhalese community forms the majority of the
population, with Tamils, who are concentrated in the north and east of the island, forming the largest ethnic
minority. Other communities include Moors, Burghers, Kaffirs and the Malays.
Famous for the production and export of tea, coffee, coconuts and rubber, Sri Lanka boasts a progressive
and modern industrial economy and the highest per capita income in South Asia. The natural beauty of Sri
Lanka's tropical forests, beaches and landscape, as well as its rich cultural heritage, make it a world famous
tourist destination.
After over two thousand years of rule by local kingdoms, parts of Sri Lanka were colonized by Portugal and
the Netherlands beginning in the 16th century, before the control of the entire country was ceded to the British
Empire in 1815. During World War II, Sri Lanka served as an important base for Allied forces in the fight
against the Japanese Empire.[5] A nationalist political movement arose in the country in the early 20th centu-
ry with the aim of obtaining political independence, which was eventually granted by the British after peaceful
negotiations in 1948.

Thailand
Thailand -
Is an independent country that lies in the heart of Southeast Asia. It is bordered to the north by Laos and
Myanmar, to the east by Laos and Cambodia, to the south by the Gulf of Thailand and Malaysia, and to the west
by the Andaman Sea and Myanmar. By the maritime boundary, the country is bordered to the southeast by
Vietnam in the Gulf of Thailand, to the southwest by Indonesia and India in the Andaman Sea.
The capital and largest city of Thailand is Bangkok. It is also the country's center of political, commercial,
industrial and cultural activities. Bangkok is known in Thai as "Krung Thep Mahanakorn," or, more colloqui-
ally, "Krung Thep", meaning "City of Angels".
Thailand is the world's 51st-largest country in terms of total area, roughly equal in size to Spain, with a sur-
face area of approximately 513,000 km2 (198,000 sq mi), and the 20th most-populous country, with approxi-
mately 63 million people. About 75% of the population is ethnically Thais, 14% is of Chinese origin, and 3%
is ethnically Malay,[2] the rest belong to minority groups including Mons, Khmers, and various hill tribes. The
country's official language is Thai.
Thailand is one of the most devoutly Buddhist countries in the world. The national religion is Theravada
Buddhism which is practiced by more than 95% of all Thais.[3] The cultures and traditions in Thailand are sig-
nificantly influenced by those of India, China and many western countries.
Thailand is a constitutional monarchy with King Bhumibol Adulyadej, the ninth king of the House of
Chakri, as the ruling monarch. The King has reigned for more than half a century, making him the longest reign-
ing Thai monarch and the longest reigning current monarch in the world. The King is recognized as the Head
of State, the Head of the Armed Forces, the Upholder of the Buddhist religion, and Defender of the Faith.
Thailand is the only country in Southeast Asia that has never been ruled by a European power. However, dur-
ing the Second World War, and while claiming neutrality, Thailand was occupied by the armed forces of the
Empire of Japan who built the infamous 'Death Railway' using captured Allied Prisoners of War and slave Asian
labourers.

Turkey
Turkey -
Is a Eurasian country that stretches across the Anatolian peninsula in western Asia and Thrace (Rumelia) in the
Balkan region of southeastern Europe. Turkey is bordered by eight countries: Bulgaria to the northwest; Greece
to the west; Georgia to the northeast; Armenia, Azerbaijan (the exclave of Nakhichevan) and Iran to the east;
and Iraq and Syria to the southeast. The Mediterranean Sea and Cyprus are to the south; the Aegean Sea and
Archipelago are to the west; and the Black Sea is to the north. Separating Anatolia and Thrace are the Sea of
Marmara and the Turkish Straits (the Bosporus and the Dardanelles), which are commonly reckoned to delin-
eate the border between Asia and Europe, thereby making Turkey transcontinental.
Due to its strategic location astride two continents, Turkey's culture has a unique blend of Eastern and
Western tradition. A powerful regional presence in the Eurasian landmass with strong historic, cultural and eco-
nomic influence in the area between Europe in the west and Central Asia in the east, Russia in the north and the
Middle East in the south, Turkey has come to acquire increasing strategic significance.
Turkey is a democratic, secular, unitary, constitutional republic whose political system was established in
1923 under the leadership of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, following the fall of the Ottoman Empire in the aftermath
of World War I. Since then, Turkey has become increasingly integrated with the West through membership in
organizations such as the Council of Europe, NATO, OECD, OSCE and the G-20 major economies. Turkey
began full membership negotiations with the European Union in 2005, having been an associate member of the
EEC since 1963, and having reached a customs union agreement in 1995. Meanwhile, as a Muslim-majority
country, Turkey has continued to foster close cultural, political, economic and industrial relations with the
Eastern world, particularly with the states of the Middle East and Central Asia, through membership in organ-
izations such as the OIC and ECO. Turkey is classified as a developed country by the CIA and as a regional
power by political scientists and economists worldwide.

Viet Nam -
Is the easternmost country on the Indochina Peninsula in Southeast Asia. It is bordered by China to the north,
Laos to the northwest, Cambodia to the southwest, and the South China Sea to the east. With a population of
over 86 million, Vietnam is the 13th most populous country in the world.
The people of Vietnam regained independence and broke away from China in AD 938 after their victory at
the battle of Ba.ch ?a(`ng River. Successive dynasties flourished along with geographic and political expansion
deeper into Southeast Asia, until it was colonized by the French in the mid-19th century. Efforts to resist the
French eventually led to their expulsion from the country in the mid-20th century, leaving a nation divided polit-
ically into two countries. Fighting between the two sides continued during the Vietnam War, ending with a
Communist victory in 1975.
Emerging from this prolonged military engagement, the war-ravaged nation was politically isolated. The
government’s centrally planned economic decisions hindered post-war reconstruction and its treatment of the
losing side engendered more resentment than reconciliation. In 1986, it instituted economic and political
reforms and began a path towards international reintegration. By 2000, it had established diplomatic relations
with most nations. Its economic growth had been among the highest in the world in the past decade. These
efforts culminated in Vietnam joining the World Trade Organization in 2007 and its successful bid to become
a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council in 2008.

Australia
Australia -
Is a country in the southern hemisphere comprising the mainland of the world's smallest continent, the major
island of Tasmania, and numerous other islands in the Indian and Pacific Oceans.N4 Neighbouring countries
include Indonesia, East Timor, and Papua New Guinea to the north, the Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, and New
Caledonia to the north-east, and New Zealand to the south-east.
For around 40,000 years before European settlement commenced in the late 18th century, the Australian
mainland and Tasmania were inhabited by around 250 individual nations[7] of indigenous Australians.[8] After
sporadic visits by fishermen from the immediate north, and European discovery by Dutch explorers in 1606,[9]
the eastern half of Australia was claimed by the British in 1770 and initially settled through penal transporta-
tion to the colony of New South Wales, founded on 26 January 1788. The population grew steadily in the fol-
lowing years; the continent was explored, and during the 19th century another five largely self-governing
Crown Colonies were established.
On 1 January 1901, the six colonies became a federation, and the Commonwealth of Australia was formed.
Since Federation, Australia has maintained a stable liberal democratic political system and remains a
Commonwealth realm. The population is just over 21.6 million, with approximately 60% concentrated in and
around the mainland state capitals of Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, and Adelaide. The nation's capital
city is Canberra, located in the Australian Capital Territory (ACT).
Technologically advanced and industrialised, Australia is a prosperous multicultural country and has good
results in many international comparisons of national performance such as health care, life expectancy, quali-
ty-of-life, human development, public education, economic freedom, and the protection of civil liberties and
political rights.
