DEDICATION

This is dedicated to her family, who taught her that the best kind of knowledge to

have is that which is learned for its own sake. It is also dedicated to her mentors, who taught

her that even the largest task can be accomplished if it is done one step at a time.

Without their patience, understanding, support, and most of all love, the completion of

this work would not have been possible.

Introduction

“Practice isn’t the thing you do once you’re good. It’s the thing you do that makes

you good” – Malcolm Gladwell.

Practice teaching is of paramount importance in the vocational training of

student teachers. It is this immersion into the real world of school that prepares

the student in making the transition from trainee to professional.

Practice Teaching is a crucial part of every student teacher’s life during

college. Student teachers or pre-service teachers are college students teaching

under the supervision of a certified teacher in order to qualify for a degree in

education. These certified teachers are called cooperating teachers and the school

where this teacher is working is called the cooperating school. Practice teaching is

where she had learned a lot of things which had helped her to improve. Practice

teaching is where she developed her good personality as a teacher.

Ipag Elementary School is located at the center of community Barangay

Ipag, Mariveles, Bataan. Since it has small number of populations, there is only a

two-story building provided for student-learners. As you enter the school,

student’s area is the first division that you may see. Besides the students are is

the canteen. Aligned with the students area and canteen is the Principals Office.

7
POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY OF THE PHILIPPINES

However, the school in general has also disadvantage because it is located near the

bottom region of a mountain that has a possibility to cause harm such as landslide

and falling of debris during catastrophe. On the other hand, the school

administrators maintain the security of the students and still give an environment

that is conducive to learn.

Life of a student teacher

Her life being a student teacher was not easy. She wakes up as early as 4:45

am just to come to school at 6:30 in the morning. Practice teaching experience

brought her so much memory. She had experience to become a real teacher. She

became more responsible with her duties as a student teacher.

Student teaching is a college-supervised instructional experience; usually

the culminating course in a university/college undergraduate education or graduate

school program leading to teacher education and certification. It is required by

those earning either a Bachelor of Education or Master of Education degree.

Student teaching is required for students who are not yet certified to

teach. It is different from a practicum, which is required when a student already

holds certification to teach, yet wants a certificate extension to teach another

area of specialization; they are both college-supervised field-based experiences.

8
POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY OF THE PHILIPPINES

The student teaching experience lasts about the length of a semester; long

enough to fulfill the college’s assigned tasks. It is an unpaid internship. This

experience gives the prospective teaching professional an opportunity to teach

under the supervision of a permanently certified master teacher.

The student teacher is usually placed in a neighboring or participating school

district. The student teacher is monitored by the cooperating teacher from the

district, as well as a supervisor through the college. The supervisor acts as a liaison

between the cooperating teacher and the head of the college’s student teaching

department.

The student teacher essentially shadows the cooperating teacher for about

one week, eventually gaining more responsibility in teaching the class as the days

and weeks progress. Eventually, the student teacher will assume most of the

teaching responsibilities for the class including class management, lesson planning,

assessment, and grading. Thus, the student teacher is able to more fully

experience the role of the teacher as the classroom teacher takes on the

observation role in the class. There is sometimes a "phasing out" week were the

student teacher returns the teaching role back to the regular teacher.

Teaching is a lifelong learning process of learning about new philosophies and

new strategies, learning from the parents and community, learning from colleagues,

9
POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY OF THE PHILIPPINES

and especially learning from the children. Children have taught her to open her

mind and her heart to the joys, the innocence, and the diversity of ideas in the

world. Because of this, she will never forget how to smile with the new, cherish the

old, and laugh with the children.

Working Experience

Working with Cooperating teacher

Her cooperating gave her a very meaningful experienced. She shared her

experienced when she was still a student teacher before. The student teacher

learned a lot of things with regards to teaching and adopting to the pupils.

They decided that the student teacher will be having her teaching once a

week. She will be teaching Mathematics that will be her subject on her final demo.

Her first discussion was on January 10, 2017. While teaching, her cooperating

teacher was at the back and observing her. After the discussion there was a

sharing of opinions with regards to the execution and materials. Her cooperating

teacher gave her some advises that she can use when she is at the field. She also

taught her on getting the performances of the pupil.

Her cooperating teacher very generous to her because she allow her to take

pictures with the pupils, answering her questions regarding the pupils and by

10
POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY OF THE PHILIPPINES

sharing to her some materials in the classroom. The student teacher was very

thankful because her cooperating teachers don’t allow her to do something without

knowing what exactly it is.

She was allowed to do daily routines like singing of National anthem, reciting

Panatang Makabayan and Panunumpa sa Watawat ng Pilinas, exercise and prayer

every Monday morning.

Her cooperating teacher was also very considerate whenever she was not

able to comply with the requirements she needs to submit. But the student teacher

will do her best to submit it by finishing the requirements though not on time. And

whenever she had to go to her school to attend seminars.

When they had their periodical exams on January 19, 2017, she helped her

cooperating teacher checking the papers and giving scores. She helped her

cooperating teacher to clean the classroom by organizing the flashcards and some

bulletin boards inside the school. She also helped by facilitating the pupils when

they had their physical fitness test last February 2, 2017.

In preparing for the final demo, her cooperating teacher told her to pass

her draft as soon as possible so that they can check it whenever they are some

11
POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY OF THE PHILIPPINES

revisions with the activity. After checking the draft she started to make her

instructional materials.

Her cooperating teacher always motivates her that she can do it. She can

execute it properly and don’t get nervous when the final demo comes. They made it

because she finished her final demo with good performance.

Working with School Administrator

The principal of the school accommodate her on the first day of her

practice teaching. There was a short orientation to all the student teachers. She

discussed some rules and regulations of the school. Afterwards the principal sent

her to her respective classroom. Every week the principal monitor her if she had

learned to her cooperating teacher.

The principal of the school don’t let her finished her practice teaching

without making sure that she learned from it. That’s why she always asked the

student teacher every time she sees her around. She was also very approachable

and kind to all the student teachers.

Working with Other Personnel

The other personnel in Ipag Elementary School are the canteen owner,

clerks and the secretary of the principal. They are very nice and approachable to

12
POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY OF THE PHILIPPINES

her. They always gave her information about the school and the teachers. They also

share free foods in the canteen. They shared a lot of story about their selves and

making fun with the student teacher. She really had a great experience with them.

They are very kind and generous to her. They are very approachable and nice. They

helped the student teacher to prepare her instructional materials for her final

demo.

Working with Pupils

The pupils gave her a memorable experienced in Ipag Elementary School.

They are like her little sister and brother. Their innocence make her realized that

every situation shouldn’t take seriously.

As she enters their classroom she already noticed that the pupils are very

excited to have another teacher. Grade 1 is not an easy class. There are some

pupils have difficult time in reading words that’s why they have always a reading

session every morning before starting their lesson. The student teacher was in

charge in that routine. She used flashcards and charts in the reading session. She

also facilitates the pupils when they were having some activities such as art

activities, physical fitness and contest.

13
POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY OF THE PHILIPPINES

The student teacher had given a chance to discuss infront 4 times. In that

limited time of teaching she already memorized their names. They can’t hide their

childish attitudes when they are having activities that’s why she will do some roll

call to get the attentions of the pupils. She also helped the contestant in MTAP in

reviewing their lessons. Her mentor gave her the instruction and she will do it to

the pupils.

When her last day with the pupils she cried because she will miss them so

much. Their smiles and their laughter. Especially those kids who are very sweet to

her.

Working with Parents

She had given an opportunity to work with the parents every morning when

they sent their child in school by a short chit-chat. Though the time was so limited

she had a nice experience with them. Whenever they helped their child cleaning

the classroom there was a short conversation with them. The parents are so nice

because they will not let their child clean the classroom but instead they will do it

as a simple helped. The student teacher will be assisting their child outside.

14
POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY OF THE PHILIPPINES

Working with Community

The people in the community of Ipag was very generous and kind. Whenever

she go to school they always greet her. It really motivates her to attend classes’

every day because of that simple greetings by the people of the community. It

really shows that the people in the community are very approachable and hospitable

to their guest.

In the afternoon she was eating outside the school at one of the Carenderia

near the school. The Carenderia owner was very approachable and very kind to her.

She had a granddaughter and the child always call her “Ma’am” with matching wave

of her hand. That child was very adorable. On the other hand the student teacher

can’t eat her lunch because the child wants to talk to her all the time that’s why

sometimes she late.

Working with Co-student Teacher

She had a very nice experienced with her co-student teacher because of

this practice teaching they had a lot of good times together. This practice

teaching was not boring because of them. They had given a chance to know each

other more. They are always together eating lunch and even leaving the school.

15
POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY OF THE PHILIPPINES

They are also helping each other doing their instructional materials for their final

demo.

Summary of Diary

January 6, 2017 was the first day of her practice teaching in Ipag

Elementary School. She was being accommodated by the principal of the school

and assigned her to her respective area. She was assigned in Grade I-1 under

Ma’am Marie Jinky A. Caratiket.

She had her discussion 4 times only in one subject which is

Mathematics. She had her first discussion last January 10, 2017. Her last

discussion was February 3, 2017. In her discussion she already memorize the

names of her pupils and determined those who are naughty and good in

academic field. There was a lot of activities that she experienced inside and

outside the school. All of that experienced made her practice teaching very

meaningful and memorable.

The last month of the student teacher in the school was very exciting

because it was her final demo. She was very busy doing her instructional

materials while checking her lesson plan by the master teacher of the school.

She finished her final demo with good performance. Her last day was March

10, 2107 Friday. There was birthday celebration that day that’s why before

she leave the school they had a boodle fight. Because of this, she will never

forget the school where she experienced a lot of things in field.
